Fall Storm on Lake Superior

  • An incredible display of force from nature and Lake Superior. The wind felt like it would pick us up and, when it gusted, Superior looked more like Class V rapids than a lake. NOAA said the waves were 17ft and Environment Canada issued a gale warning. Recorded speeds in Marathon, Ontario (where this was filmed) exceeded 80km/h.

I sailed as an engineer on Lake Superior for 6 years. Sailed on the sister ship of the Edmund Fitzgerald the S/S Middletown with the Oglebay Norton Co. The 1000 ft Lake Freighters even get tossed around like soda cans. I remember these seas very well. Lake Superior is a completely unforgiving lake. Have to respect her strength and power! Great footage Jonathan!

Ive lived on the Atlantic Ocean and now live surrounded by the Great Lakes. For anyone who hasnt seen them, its hard to fathom a freshwater lake so huge that you can go out in a boat, and not see land anywhere, horizon to horizon of water just like when you go out in the oceans. The waves are not as big as the oceans, but when theres a front and its creating these waves, they get big, real big, and the undercurrent is dangerously strong. I recommend to anyone who hasnt to visit them at some point, its quite a sight.

There's no ebb, just violent flow; no break in the waves, just one after another. This is amazing, and beautiful, yet frightening.

Honestly I’ve never given the Great Lakes the respect they deserve. I’ve never been near them as I’m in Kentucky, and while we have some lakes here, none are equal to the size of the Great Lakes. I suppose when you have. Body of water that large, and storm conditions roll in, they become oceans of their own. This footage is fantastic, and a bit scary. Thanks for sharing this.

Of course i looked up the lyrics to the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald to add my reference..
I had never actually Read the lyrics before tho I've heard the song many times (being a Michigander)
got me right in the feels.
~ Does any one know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her
They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters...
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy

  • @williamfulgham2010
    @williamfulgham2010 2 роки тому +4

Gordon Lightfoot got it exactly right with his iconic ode to the Fitz. I listen to this song every year about this time in November when radio stations across the country bring it back annually, and I can't imagine how anyone could make the run on a freighter anywhere close to this time of year. Everyone still remembers and morns the 29 who went down that night.

I love your channel. I'm from Chicago and some years ago I drove up to Lake Superior because some ice caves were accessible. I got there at night and arrived to an empty parking lot well up from the lake, which I couldn't see. Being from the city, I'm not even accustomed to real darkness, so I thought I'd turn off my engine and lights and just listen to the waves crashing. You know, immerse myself in nature. The next 15 seconds were terrifying. The sound was like a dozen claps of thunder at once. It was like listening to the world being born. I shamed myself with how I scrambled for the lights.

Great footage guys. I don't know what it is about watching waves that is so mesmerizing but I can sit and watch them for hours even on a pretty calm day. Definitely been a windy week. We had a gale warning on Wed her in St. Ignace, MI and today is a wind advisory too. Thanks for the awesome video and stay safe filming!

C'mon, you can paddle your canoe through this! Yeah, right!
These large lake storms create such wild wave flows! It's absent of any rhythmic patterns. It's like every wave for itself!

As i watch this, it's unmatched beautiful and nature at it's most magnificent. On the other hand it's terrifying to see and it's scary as nothing else. I imagine myself in that kind of weather on a ship, it must be an aweful and a bonechilling nightmare scenario to be a witness too. So nature at it's most breathtaking and likewize, at it's most aweful and destructiv.
