- In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education video, we demonstrate how to place an intravenous (IV) catheter in a dog or cat. This procedure is performed commonly in veterinary practice, and veterinarians and veterinary technicians must feel comfortable with this procedure.

😮 THAT CAT IT'S AN ANGEL!!
MY PATIENTS DO NOT BEHAVE SO CALM
It's not very often that you get a cat that performs this well throughout the entire procedure.
They may have got some sort of relaxant prior to filimg.

so I'm lucky?
Is this your cat? Your cat is high.
That cat is better behaved than the human patients I have to start IVs on my job lol
The cat is so cute
I am a human nurse , why am i watching this

Me too!
I did learn how to insert a line in a human and this came up
same!!
...AWESOME video, thank you....will save a lot of pets.
You make it look so easy
thank you so much for your great help, am veterinary pharmacise .
We use luer lock t-ports for our catheters. Helps keep the catheter in a lot better than those slip tips.
Thank you for this wonderful explanation 🍀🌸
Please can you help me to know more about the worm infection and How to treat? I have a little 2 years cat and I losing it ?
Very nice vet. Doctor ji
Where is the place for we get that silet ?
Good work doctor
Excelente video....
That dog took it like a G. Wow
That cat skin was tough! I always cut down with the back of a 15 blade on cats! It works everytime. Sometimes their skin is just so tough, the catheter just won’t advance! Good video!
I’m so bothered that they didn’t shave all the way around the arm. You’re gonna rip their hair off when taking the catheter out 💀
Ease off! Best thing ever made! Especially for those clients who don't like the hair cut off.
Good work 👍
En que tiempo ay que cambiar un catéter en un gato
Que tiempo dilata un catéter en el gato
they seem like such polite pets. i hope they recovered well. does this hurt for them?
Analgesics of upper echelon here. We strive to controlled pain at all times, so it never hurts for them 💕
Sorry i'm a little bit ignorant but isn't that risky?
awsome job girls
Why are we putting so many negative comments here, but there are other videos of cats under anesthesia with NO monitoring, IV catheters, or heat support that have nothing but rave reviews? Each tech/dr is going to have their own technique for placing/taping catheters AND holding. We don't know that the cat wasn't held another way only to have scruffing be the way it responded the best...
well because its educational video and subscribtion for this chanel is quite costly and they are not showing even how to perform this procedure correctly...
,G
interesting video! , but I think it would be better if narration matches the sequence of actions on video.
Gatto bravo!
Purtroppo,
non tutti, sono così.
😂
Really nice
I am a fresh DVM graduate. Can I join your clinic, if I can then how?
Где это нашли такого спокойного кота я использую процедурную сумку для кошек в этой сумке кошка лежит неподвижно и можно иметь доступ к лапе
This could have been a good demonstration , but why did you do so much of a close up! much better if it were a wider frame so we could see what was actually happening, esp when inserting the guide wire etc. Also, doesn't air escape out of the catheter prior to inserting guide wire?? there was no plug on the end...??
How to prevent backflow of blood?
watching this after i placed my first iv catheter and got blood all over the place
Valeu muito bom gostei muito 👏👏👏👏
Is that what they use for s urinary tract blocked?
no, an IV catheter goes IntraVeniously. A urinary blockage requires a Urinary Catheter
Ahhhhh, remember the good old days when you could obtain TSets like these???
What kind of tape os the translucent one?
It's tegaderm. First time I see in my life, I haven't seen them in Nicaragua. It blew my mind lol
Tegaderm. Available in human medicine shops.
[I am a constant Paediatrician of humans and we apply it ]
I want to become a vet but idk if i would become a good vet
Poor guy😣 keep your cat healthy guys
Nice
A little spooky how much that cat looks like my kitty.
They gave my cay iv fluids this weekend and her little arm has been red in the injection site. Is that normal?
Mines getting them now... I'm so worried.
@@iamavoidtrippergutterslush666 Hi. I was so worried about this. I took pictures of my cats arm and emailed them to the vet because I was worried it was infected. The vet responded and said that she didn't believe it was and told me to just keep an eye on it. It remained really red for about 10 days. It was red and the redness was like in a squiggly line. My baby wouldn't stop licking it so I think it made it worse. I would say that after 15 days or so, I started noticing the redness going away and it eventually went away completely. About 2 months ago I took my other cat that was in her final stages of kidney failure to get IV fluids too and she didn't get any redness in her arm. I don't know if my first baby was allergic to something or if they were just really rough with her. I hope they didn't poke her incorrectly or something. Good luck to you! Just make sure you check the little arm and keep an eye on it.
@@twin510 okay thank you are deeply appreciated this and I will look for that Um My cats happen to be one and a half to two years old so and they're kind of miniature snow shoe so they're actually really small Yeah but I will look for that so thank you I really appreciate that I'm so worried about them right now I'm trying to clean my house to make it better for them and maybe they got into something cuz they were fine at 9:30 this morning but by 11am they're pupils were dilated and acting lethargic not being able to walk correctly breathing shallow. Vet said bloodwork is fine. Which is odd. Because one has a low temperature. And that's the one that also has more sensitive skin. I really appreciate your reply. I'm just soooooo worried. The other odd thing is when I first winter there was like four cars so mine weren't the only animals that was sick like that, then I forgot my wallet in a panic at home and I went back to get it and then when I arrive back at the vet place there was over a dozen cars there and I could go out and talk to more the guys and he said his dog was fine this morning just finally acting sick too and even like not walking right really slow and instead of going to see yours which mine didn't have seizures but that is scary and I don't know there must be something going on in the universe and why is this all on September 11th. I'm just so worried about them and ALL animals. Ty again. ✌🕊🐱🐱
Sorry I use the microphone and I wrote that too fast and I didn't going back and correct errors I hope you can still make it out for instance the word winter is not that wasn't supposed to be the microphone heard me wrong it was supposed to be when I got there alright sorry I hope you can figure it out thanks
@@iamavoidtrippergutterslush666 Sorry for not replying back yesterday. I had work and couldn't get a chance to reply. How are they today? Maybe your kitties got into something they weren't supposed to like cleaning supplies? Or maybe some toxins... could it be the drinking water if multiple animals are sick? My cat, the one that had the redness in her arm, I took her to the vet because she was lethargic too. She suddenly stopped eating and just wanted to hide under the bed all day long. Before she got sick, I was deep cleaning the grout in my floor with some heavy cleaners. I think she might have walked over it and it probably got in her paws and it was absorbed into her skin or maybe she licked her paws. When I took her to the vet, they did bloodwork and everything came back normal. They still don't know what it could have been but I'm pretty sure it was the cleaning supplies. She did end up getting better though. She was at the vet for 3 days with iv fluids and after I brought her home, she started eating a little more each day and now she is back to normal!
Strong animals
Fofura 🤩🤩🤩😘🤩😘
I have never seen one of those here in Brazil...
Yeah right... this is the bright side of this. What about the dark side?! The hard and very difficult time when you have a crazy animal or just an animal that his venes aren't visible, I WANNA KNOW HOW YOU DO IT ?!
Pavelescu Cristina dogs who won't let you do it may be sedated; cats would be burritoed in a towel and take one leg, either cephalic or saphenous; last resort, sedation.
1cc xylazine will do the job......
Throw the whole animal away LOLJK JK JK 🥴🥴 Honestly Just Gotta Do Your Best To Work With What You Got Don’t Ever Give Up 😅
is that real cat?
usually cats won't stop moving
after the work of catheter is done we need to take it out and the tape seems to stucked with the hairs so mch that it is painful to the animal.any suggestion on how to remove the tape painlessly from the site??
Drop Tamang Each piece of tape should be folded in at the ends. The area should be shaved enough to where the tape wouldn't be an issue on the fur
Drop Tamang you can put alcohol on the tape to remove it painlessly
You can also use oil or a spray I think it's called EaseOff
We use ease off. Best thing every made
if i knw this b4 may my kitty survives....
coz my veternary dont know how to do this...?
but now i can :)
lol the cat
Amazing! Im a nurse tho 😂
SNIM 12 and there animal nurses
A technician does everything a nurse can do and more, on a wider variety of species. Plus we are our own anesthetist. But we get paid less than hand as much. Seems fair right
@@benjaminshiffman8734 Oh stuff it. You do not "do everything a nurse can do," and you don't know the hell we go through in human hospitals, and likewise we don't know your job. I could not do yours, and you could not do mine.
This looked so much more painful than when it’s done on a human. Wow
So true
Seems even easier than I try to cannulae an an adult human😂

Put some gloves on!!
Please do NOT use a tiny piece of tape as shown in this video. It creates a tourniquet which causes swelling.
A CATether?
thats not correct procedure at all....you dont break sterility after surgical scrub so first you palpate the vein than you scrub -you dont scrub first and than contaminate with palpating unless you are wearing sterile gloves...
DONT BE SO FUNDAMENTALIST!!!!!
thats what im talking about do it on your exam-dismissed instantly....this vetgirl is paid subscribtion and they dont demonstrate it even correctly...
It is not always possible to find and manipulate a vein wearing gloves, specially in small and non cooperative subjects. Also it is most often needed to palpate the vein just before insertion and often even after insertion of the channel, so as to prevent the double puncture. Proper handwashing before the procedure is practically okk

Nor do you scruff a perfectly docile cat.
mmm scruff? no but i would restrain a little more just in case. I love cats, but even a cat who seems sweet could try to bite at pain. my own lets you know and will try to bite before he goes in for the actual bite, but some are sneakier. Main rule if the vet gets bitten can lose your job, soooo yeah.
I didn't say don't restrain, just tired of scruffing being people's go-to. It actually makes many cats mad in my experience. A hand under the jaw like a dog or using a towel is so much better.
Yeah were gonna be learning how to do a gentle "no-scruff" method at my clinic soon, as the main Dr doesn't like it either, and I always thought it seemed too rough myself.
1ml Xylazine will do the trick for watch-dogs.....but you must be extremely careful and never perform it without mouth-gag
She's keeping the face away, making it safe for the placer. It could possibly be a better hold for the restrainer. The cat obviously doesn't mind it, nor does it seem like its having trouble. We have a doctor who hates scruffing by any means. And we have had techs bitten because of this. Safety is always a priority. And no one likes making a call to the owner that their pet bit a tech.
