Hélène Grimaud and Sol Gabetta have recorded their first album together for Deutsche Grammophon. It's a musical sensation!
Every so often, a musical encounter sees a truly astonishing "musico-biological" process take place. The meeting of the pianist Hélène Grimaud and the cellist Sol Gabetta last summer at the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad was one such rare encounter. Two charismatic stars made music together: two performers who play with such a combination of passion and intelligence that time after time they made the classics sound as contemporary as if composed today.
These two stars of classical music recorded a selection of masterpieces by Schumann, Brahms, Debussy and Shostakovich for Deutsche Grammophon. Take a look at the trailer!

Helene and Sol clearly have a genuine affection for each other, and this makes their duo a real pleasure to watch and to listen to. They are collaborating, not competing. 09/18/2013

the warming up warms me up
This is just wonderful. It definitely gives you more understanding of how two great artists collaborate (particularly to a lay person who just loves classical music), and it is genuine, unlike some other DG promotional videos. No more words are needed.
This was my very first Hélène Grimaud album and is still my favourite.

ensemble playing can connect people really deeply if you are both on the same frequency...I don't think it can be compared to anything physical, it is a spiritual connection almost like sharing your soul. These musicians are connected and they did great music on the CD!
Both of them are beautiful women and virtuose players as well.
Helene is even more charming, controlled, musical & spiritual than I had ever imagined just staring at her pic on cover of Keyboard magazines. Greatly apprec. expert insights of the commenters. especially 071949, Rimbaud, ritorinello. To Tsu, thanx for the historical references! esp Cortot, Argerich, Miasky etc.

On an earlier video Grimaud speaks English virtually accentless unlike here. In other words, when in Rome.... She's a real character.
The pieces are not my cup of tea, but their enthusiasm is wonderful!
It might be a little unfair towards Sol but I would like the idea Hélène Grimaud with Jacqueline du Pré! (Unfortunately not possible!) Grimaud for me is one of the best living pianists today (my no.2 behind Krystian Zimerman)! :D
Sol is as good if not better than du Pré! Sol can also speak German, Russian, French, Spanish and English fluently.
