Thanks for watching folks. I’m sure you all have your preferred sleeping arrangements and what works best for you. Obviously, this is what Kelly and I believe is the best setup for us - it won’t be for everybody. How do you prefer to camp? Let us know in the comments below!
Those chicken burgers looked really good. We love our RTT. It's on our little camper trailer. We stick with the RTT and swags. Sometimes it's just to windy for an RTT.
I went down the oztent path and I agree with you on downsides. I gave up on it and now sleep in the car as I camp solo, no more trying to find space/time to dry a bulky tent anymore!
I have a rooftop, custom made. Flips over and doubles the size of the area. Gives you outside area as well as a full size double bed, higher at the head end. It’s on a tray back camper so there’s a ladder up then a platform to stand on, makes it super easy to get out and into bed, and you can stand on the platform and get dressed, all under cover. The design is like a flip over camper trailer but it packs flat on the roof and you can leave all the bedding and pillows in it. Mate of mine makes them and they are the best I’ve seen. Love sleeping off the ground.
I built the entire set up in the back of my suv to suit a sleeping arrangement including a pullout kitchen 😉. I love it! Super comfy, and bed ready on arrival. My camp set up take’s under 1 minute.
You've changed Matty, you've Changed!! 😂😂 Gus is becoming a real polished touring rig now, just have to get a travel buddy and 12v hot blanket and you'll be done!!
Yes mate i recently put a bush company RTT on my prado after getting there awning, wife and daughter love it when they come camping and I’m in the swag which I love, when I camp alone I’m in the RTT ,It’s quicker and easier to set up than my swag , more head room, up high for a breeze or off the wet ground, plus all the bedding stays in there
It a fan of the roof top tents, especially up in the Vic High Country. Want to limit the weight on the roof. Plus once your setup your set up, I’ve had many different setups for the troopy… I’ve slept inside for years, swagged it, and also have a Oztent… which is great for weekends as you have a home base, room for storage etc. even if it rains it only a 30sec setup to dry it out. THe RTT will still get wet. To bad if it’s your everyday vehicle, when will you set it up again to dry it out. Just my thoughts. But a great insight into it all. Everyone is different. 👍🏼
Yeah mate I get that. It’s not about trying to avoid ever having wet gear. That’s unrealistic. But more just the convenience and time. It’s still a lot easier to pop the tent at home to dry than set up a ground tent ect.
I have uppgraded to a 4wd mits delica thats now a cosy bed with ample room for EVERYTHING, i carry an airpole zempire tent for longer trips that is a change room bathroom and escape the flies or weather room. Its easy to pump up and deflate on my own, even if it rains as the fly is attached, so by just using my thick n thirsty towel job done while rolling it up. Personalising ur set up is awesome continuous improvement great going guys ❣👍
I'm a roof top tent fan as well. There are definitely pros and cons. I don't like the added weight up to when going over obstacles but i really like the convenience. The convenience won.
Great episode mate, I have always used a swag for camping and could never convince myself to get a RTT but the convenience of not having to pack up bedding and roll up a wet swag is making me think it's not a bad move.
Great video mate. Those cheap tents can do you well for quite some time. The wife & I use a 10p Wanderer tent that we have had for about 5 years now, paid $200 for it and it still works well although last time out we copped a decent storm and I did have some water dripping in. Floor and everything was dry by morning though even under the mattress. Ours was coming in at the seams and dripping off the little hooks to attach the waterproof skin to the inner fly. Love the wild life too mate and the old fire fighting gear.
@WESTRALIAN OFFROAD that they can mate and for those just getting into camping they are a good option to start with without spending a small fortune. My parents spent $600 on a 6p Instant up tent a couple of years ago and still haven't gone camping. Plus all the other gear. My son and I have used the stretchers and self inflating mattresses when we have stayed, my parents haven't.
Great video again Mat and Kelly, Gnaala Mia is one of our favourite camping spots, but we live on the road full-time now with a small dog so cant go there until she goes to doggy heaven one day.The little bandicoot you saw with a short tail was probably a Quenda😊
I camp with my 2 young kids, went from big swag to side opening rtt, then to tent with inflatable mattresses then went back to rtt with opening like yours. So much more convenient, so easy, I looked at the 30 second tents but you still have to blow up mattress etc. It depends on the type of camping you do. I do a lot of 1 or 2 nighters so a big tent setup won't work for me.
A cracking good show mate👍👍👍 best wishers in your new roof top tent looks nice mate all the best in your future adventures and hope to see more of Kelly in a lot more as she brings out the best in you lol cheers.
I’m thinking of getting a rooftop tent for my RAV4, atm I sleep inside on a platform I made. Although it all folds into the boot space, the problem I find is because it’s my only vehicle, I either take everything out when not camping or have to put tools, shopping, work stuff as well as passengers 😂 on the back seats. Don’t need anything big, something like you have looks ideal. Do you think it will be hot in the summer?(yes we do have summer for a week or two 🇬🇧😂😂)More importantly for us, how waterproof are they? 😂
I have no doubt it will get warm in the heat. Though once setup and left to air out I’m sure like anything it will cool down nicely by the time we’re ready to turn in! And very waterproof 😁
I've watched Luke's (from Drifta) recent trip across the Gunbarrel and up the Canning SR with Uncle Richard. I saw the RTT he used for the trip and thought I might try one. They sure look OK but have one question which I reckon you'll know is coming! What about the 2 am nature call? How does your offsider feel about the climb and the interruption?
A Chuditch, aka Western Quoll as you said 👍 is not related to cats but yeah I agree they look much like Aussies own little cat hey 👍 Dryandra is an awesome place for wildlife mate 👍
Kelly? is you're partners name Kelly, great smile and I bet she keeps you grounded. ORSM show, well done, keep them comming. I use a swag on a stretcher under a large awning when solo and our camper trailer when the better half comes along.
I agree, although long when packed, it makes a perfect basecamp and winter time u get a big area to stay dry, with the awning and inside the tent. Oztent is perhaps the best tent on the market.
@@Dave_Hunter all facts u spit. But the biggest game crushing power the oztent has, is its set up time is literally fk all. In no time u have a house awning and chairs set up ready to go so it gives more time to sit back n judge others setups asthey struggle. Such a simple setup yet so very solid in its design. My only gripe is, no zippers on the rear window, would be nice to access the rear window canvas cover from inside the tent not have to go all the way round to unfurl it if needed.
@@Dave_Hunterwhatever works best for you mate! I don’t think there is any “right or wrong” way of camping either tent or roof top, just whatever works best for you personally. We will see how we go with the base camp situation, but I’m fairly confident after Kelly and I talked about it, it will be no issue.
Thanks for watching folks. I’m sure you all have your preferred sleeping arrangements and what works best for you. Obviously, this is what Kelly and I believe is the best setup for us - it won’t be for everybody. How do you prefer to camp? Let us know in the comments below!
Looks like someone has started to make a shelter in the backround - around 11'30"
Great video - love your approach
At 75 I sleep in my Landcruiser as the packing up was getting too much
Yes mate I feel like that would be a great option!
Those chicken burgers looked really good. We love our RTT. It's on our little camper trailer. We stick with the RTT and swags. Sometimes it's just to windy for an RTT.
Yea that’s fair mate. I have some pegs onboard just for anytime the tent has anything flapping in the wind, just to keep it tought.
I went down the oztent path and I agree with you on downsides. I gave up on it and now sleep in the car as I camp solo, no more trying to find space/time to dry a bulky tent anymore!
Interesting perspective mate. I felt the same way with the setup/pack down.

Sounds great mate! I absolutely love being off the ground too!
Matty I run a king rtt and serious ease of set up, pack down and comfort... I keep all my bedding and my camp chairs up there too... Amazing
It’s bloody awesome hey! I love it!
wow! go the Patrol! it looks suttle but very practical for your setup! suits it well! 🏞️🛻📹🤙😎
I think the OZtent RV5 would suit you well as second tent !! coz u can. leave it around ur campsite n still drive off !
Thanks 👍
I built the entire set up in the back of my suv to suit a sleeping arrangement including a pullout kitchen 😉. I love it! Super comfy, and bed ready on arrival. My camp set up take’s under 1 minute.
That is awesome!
You've changed Matty, you've Changed!! 😂😂 Gus is becoming a real polished touring rig now, just have to get a travel buddy and 12v hot blanket and you'll be done!!
Hahaha truth be told, Kelly was looking at a 12v blanket 😂
@WESTRALIAN OFFROAD yeah yeah, stop blaming Kel! 🤣

Ripper mate! Completely agree on those couple points you make.
Great episode again guys, big rtt fan.

Although I do have a RTT on my Prado, being in my mid 70's I also have a SLWB which basically has a decent bed inside and a few other things.
That’s fair mate! I’d love an in car sleeping setup.

100% agree mate!
Beautiful forest that, we luv it
Stunning isn’t it!
Natural, unglamorised camping👍🏻 always a pleasure to watch... Thanks for taking us along 🤙🏻
Glad you enjoyed it mate, thanks for watching!
That streaky bacon looks good. Where did you get it from ? some of the stuff I've had was rubbish.
Ah just some packaged stuff from the supermarket mate. Bloody delicious.
As you know i love my roof top tent. I love the fact that it takes me 30sec to set up camp and that I can camp just about anywhere at any time.
Absolutely Trav! That’s what I’m thoroughly enjoying about it too!
Great episode mate, I have always used a swag for camping and could never convince myself to get a RTT but the convenience of not having to pack up bedding and roll up a wet swag is making me think it's not a bad move.
Yeah mate I was pretty certain I was never gonna get an RTT, see how that turned out 🤣

Looks killer bro patrol is looking mint
Getting there bro!
I've got a bush company on my 200, really love it.
Brilliant!

Ah yeah it is what it is. It’s actually not all that a big deal walking down the ladder haha.

Dryandra is an awesome place for wildlife mate 👍
Stunning place mate. Love it every time I’m there.
What was the reason for changing the roof rack?
It’s a lot easier to Mount this particular tent to three bars. Also it was good to save the weight by removing the platform too.
My fav spot, mint
last time down there got to see a numbat but it was on the righthand side camp as you come in.
Kelly? is you're partners name Kelly, great smile and I bet she keeps you grounded. ORSM show, well done, keep them comming. I use a swag on a stretcher under a large awning when solo and our camper trailer when the better half comes along.
She does keep me grounded mate, absolutely. Yes brilliant, that was my solo setup for many years also.
How close is your rig to your G.V.M just out of curiosity now? Have you weighed it recently?
It would be about bang on mate.
Roof top tents 👍👍👍👍 just don’t drink to much before going to bed 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Haha very wise words!
I have a bundutop roof tent and an oztent RV4. Oztent wins 9/10 times.
I agree, although long when packed, it makes a perfect basecamp and winter time u get a big area to stay dry, with the awning and inside the tent. Oztent is perhaps the best tent on the market.
@@krump743 add the side and front walls and it’s an excellent Basecamp. Changing room/room to eat ect. 3am pee is way easier too. Bloody ladders lol
