this was an encore at the end of this concert in Tokyo. What a set of pipes!!! to hit the E5 that clear and strong at the end of a 2 hour show says a lot about the Quality of Geoffs voice. Being a vocalist myself, I know it ain't easy.

    • @reedallen4613
      @reedallen4613 2 роки тому +2

And you notice the first high note was an A4 I think (from what vocal coaches have said), then he immediately transitions into the first E5. Then Geoff Tate spent the majority of the song in the 5th Octave, and also hit the E5 a couple more times (with an excellent full Vibrato the second time). Absolutely amazing, especially since from what I've heard he's actually a Baritone as far as natural voice range.

Either way, as far as heavy metal goes the clear standard for singing begins and ends with Halford and Dickinson. There are those guys and then everyone else. Tate falls in somewhere (close) behind them though.

I met Geoff Tate after his concert back in 1988 with my buddy who got me to the door of his bus. He was alone drinking Saki and offered us a taste telling us that it helped his vocal cords! Hahah, ya right!....My buddy told me to sing the beginning of "Take Hold The Flame" to him since I was singing a rock band myself. I sang the first few bars of it and he told me "You have great voice, great projection"! ....I nearly fell over when he said that!.....It was so cool to meet him and chat with him with no other people around, just a great memory I will "hold onto" for ever.
Oh and there is a video on UA-cam I watched today...it was off the OMC album, and it was just a month ago! and Geoff sounds great! be sure to check it out!

Whether it's in the musicality, arrangement, creativity, lyricism, story-telling, etc. There is just so much talent in so much of the metal/rock genre.

This song takes me back to a time that was very hard for me. I had just started listening to this song, repeatedly. My girlfriend at that time died in a housefire, quite literally when I started listening to this song, and so I couldn't listen to this song for a very long time. Now, I listen to it and remember her, the love I had for her (this happened when we were both in high school) and how my life has turned out. Queensryche has always been one of my top 3 favorite bands. I am happy your reaction is positive, I am just happy that the song brings joy to you both, and to me now, so many years after a very sad time in my life. Peace....

I was 20 years old and in The Marine Corp when I heard this version of this song. I was in our Rec room late on a Saturday night in Camp Pendleton Ca. The guys in the room were watching videos but not on MTV. I sat down and was blown away. What a voice! Then I saw their name.
    Hey I know these Guys.
I went to my locker and pulled out the EP and The Warning on cassette.
I sat down and popped The Warning into my cassette player and woke up everyone in the squad bay.
I’d heard the albums but for whatever reason it didn’t get to me.
But on that night in 1985 Queensrÿche became one of my favorite bands.
For days I wondered why I didn’t like them right off.
A friend walked by and said in reply to a question that I asked to no one.
Who cares, man. Just enjoy it.
So I did and still do.
So, Take Hold of the Flame.

I've been a knight in the Queesnryche Kingdom since I heard this album on it's release. I heard their EP before this, and that introduced me, so I was anticipating the release. IMO this is the best band of the '80s and my 2nd favorite of all time. (Zeppelin is God). Love the reactions. Keep 'em coming.

Yes Geoff had a couple of lines to sing like all the other greats on there, but he absolutely threw his all into it, and you can make out that it is distinctly him. Around that same time he was (IMHO) experimenting with throwing in some spookier overtones/effects to his voice like in Rage For Order (Whisper, Gonna Get Close, Neue Regel, Screaming In Digital), and that same kinda effect comes thru in his voice on We're Stars. Dio absolutely nailed the perfect vocalists and guitarists for that song 🤘

    • @purplekat5864

Yeah, I used to head one of the Empires up in Thousand Oaks, CA. Each one had a name. I called mine "Roads To Rycheness". They were very good to their fan club members. Always gave us backstage passes. BEST BAND EVER! Nice guys! Musically, lyrically, vocally, and songwriting-wise WOW! And Geoff's vocals are so powerful and controlled! But he's completely relaxed and at the same time bursting with energy! ALL of them (original lineup) Eddie, Michael, Scott, Chris, and Geoff are on that top shelf, in a kingdom they own! I could go on with a breakdown of each one of them, but methinks I've said enough.

Realize im 4 years late to the party...hmm, first time i heard this particular song, i was either in high-school or had just graduated. I really got into them when mindcrime came out and became my favorite band. My best friend was a huge fan before me and i might have heard this, im sure, before i did graduate. It took me a little to get onto them but once i did ot was over. I learned to appreciate their brilliance thr more and more i listened. And i listened, que Lloyd Christmas, ALOT.

Take Hold of the Flame - the very first Queensryche song I ever heard. There used to be a show called "Night Flight" on the old USA network back in the mid 80's. It was one hour of rock videos. I used to tape it (yay VHS), and watch it later. This video was on there one night in '85. I kept rewinding and watching it over and over again. The next day I drove my Mom's car (I was 16 at the time) to Tower Records and got The Warning album!
    Man, I'm old...

Having 2 of the best metal singers of metal on the same stage. THE FIRST QUEENSRYCHE TRACK I EVER HEARD WAS THE STUDIO VERSION OF THIS....back in 1986 on a metal compilation tape called "Hard Attack" here in India, though the song was from 1984 of course. And I was hooked for life. After hearing Geoff in the intro building into that unbelievable note, I started sourcing everything by QUEENSRYCHE that I could get my hands on.....Rage for order, Warning and then Operation Mindcrime followed by Empire both as soon as they were released. And somewhere in there I watched this Tokyo concert on VHS. Geoff hit unbelievable notes during the EP tracks too that they did in this concert. AND he looked great too. He knew how to command an audience, supreme confidence in his abilities. And as if that wasn't enough, we had the rest of the band as exceptional musicians too. Each of them a real force to reckon with. And then to top it all off, they were all obviously highly intelligent musicians creating complex but appealing music. Which appealed to a lot of us at that time as serious music as opposed to the "pop metal" of the time, though we look back on that fondly today. I reckon there wasn't a band around who could touch QUEENSRYCHE in their prime during those four albums.
