Highly underrated artist from my home town Middlesbrough. First saw him head down writing, face hidden by his long hair at the time, in one of his fathers ice cream parlours. I was just a kid my mother was a cleaner and I asked who he was. She said "that's Mr Rea's son he wants to be a musician", but I don't think his family thought he would make a living from it. It took time for him to make it in the UK however he was very popular in Europe first of all. I love all of his music and feel priviledged to have seen him working on his music when he was starting out.

One of my favourite Chris Rea songs, and I'm so glad you've reacted to both parts of the song! Yes, it is very atmospheric and haunting and the first part always gives me goose bumps! Chris Rea's voice is incredible, the song is about the M25 or London Orbital Motorway, I can imagine him being stuck on this road many times so he wrote a song about it! 😊😊

Cliff, when you said "special" I was reminded of another goosebump creating song/video, also from the UK. it is 'The Specials - Ghost Town [Official HD Remastered Video]'. A timeless classic, which originally reached the UK number on in June 1981. If you don't know, The Specials were an English 2-tone & ska-revival band formed in 1977. You'll love their beats. I find the video incredible and still find it hard to imagine how they turned East London into a ghost town to film the video.

Love, love, love Chris Rea. I'm so happy you reacted to the full version as the intro sets up the whole song. At the time of release radio stations wouldn't play long songs which is why the record company divided it into two parts and it was only the second part that got played which is criminal. Lyrics still so relevant today.

"And all the roads jam up with credit..." He foresaw the global financial crisis of 2008 eighteen years before it happened. Everyone was living beyond their means, buying things, especially cars, on credit and overstretching themselves on mortgages, "all just bits of paper flying away from you...", and thinking they were, in the vernacular of the day, 'upwardly mobile'. "Look out world, take a good look what comes down here, You must learn this lesson fast and learn it well. This ain't no upwardly mobile freeway, oh no, this is the road to Hell".

Yeah the song is about the M25, the circular road around London which was expected to alleviate the traffic problems, but as its accessed by several hundred thousand vehicles every day no-one gets anywhere fast and its a nightmare road system, however Chris is a poet with imagination and he reckons if there were a road to Hell it would be similar to the M25. Incidentally Chris wrote Driving Home for Christmas, one of the best Christmas tunes out there,

72 year old English guy here. I was lucky enough to see Chris live a couple of times in the 80's and when he played this it was something special. So glad you enjoyed it.
Can I suggest that you react to a track called "Steel River". It was written about his home town, which produced most o fht esteel in Britain which was exported all over the world and the decline of that industry and then his moving out of it and trying to make it in the music business... I have attached a link to a live version if that would help. If you would rather do the studio version it comes frome an album called "Stainsby Girls". Keep on Rocking.

This one might be his best song, but he's had a number of other quality tunes including:
    'On The Beach'
    'Josephine'
'Driving Home For Christmas' (still a staple for the holiday season on the radio around these parts)
    'I Can Hear Your Heartbeat'
'Fool (If You Think It's Over)'
I've always had a soft spot for 'Candles', too.
Side note, the award for "song title most of its time" goes to 'Shamrock Diaries'. ( _Shamrock_ was a popular brand of budget reel-to-reel tape in the 1960s to 1980s, apparently selling all kinds of Ampex B-stock.)

There are many more as well. As a side note he is car crazy especially Ferraris he had replica's built of his favourite F1 Ferrari and produced a movie about them.

    It's 'Chris Ree-ah'
    Sorry for nitpicking.
Anyway - loved your reaction to this. He's always been a great musician, but 1989 is when he really went above and beyond. Okay, so I love The Blues, but when he appeared on UK TV music show Top of the Pops, playing 'Nothing to Fear', I perked up right away. If nothing else, I wanted to see what the hip kids in the audience made of it; and I was right - like 'Road to Hell', 'Nothing to Fear' has quite a lengthy intro. However, unlike this song, NtF's intro is a slow instrumental. and those kids were absolutely baffled....
    Recommendations:
    Nothing to Fear
    God's Great Banana Skin
    Auberge
    Stainsby Girls
Black Dog (not a single, but a great tune.)
