    Alistair Brownlee in his 2nd full distance Ironman (his first had no swim) ran under 2.44 for a marathon, and eased off in the 2nd half due to having a 10 minute lead. In a Western Australian summer. Oh to be average :D

    Fascinating analysis. I found that my overall running form improves when I focus on this mantra, " run tall, shoulders back, chest out'. The 'shoulders back and chest out' ensures that I keep those shoulders up naturally, without getting that 'slumping' sensation and the attendant sloppy foot strike e.g. heel strike. This mantra keeps my foot strike where I feel most comfortable and powerful: at mid-foot.

    Hi Taren, first of love the channel!
    Isn't the shoulder carriage because of thoracic spine extension going hand in hand with retraction of the shoulder blades (with the first leading to the second) ? So more of a shoulders back then down posture. This way the arm swings using more elastic properties of the muscles on the front and back and keeping the ribcage in a favorable position for inhalation and expiration. Also it would explain the stacked position and incorporates the hip extension to a greater degree (a thing that can be read in a lot of sprinting/running biomechanics books).

    Brownlee kind of average? Sure he just done a 7:45 in Australia with a 2:44 run. I'd love to be average 😂

      @Savage Poet so Jan Frodeno isn't elite? He ran a 2:45 in 2016 when he won Kona. Kona's record time is a 2:39 with Lange. What time do you class are Elite?

    When you practice the pull method which requires the forward lean in running one does not do butt kicks. Butt kicks require that you raise the leg and kick your butt, rather you lift the knee and raise the leg to touch the butt. Without lifting the knee it is not correct and it does not require a forward lean. If one runs without a forward lean then you become a quad dominant runner which creates a series of problems and it is less efficient. When using the forward lean or pull method one ultimately requires less friction, places a lower load on the knees and gives a better hip thrust. Taren you are wrong in your analysis of many athletes in this video they have a very good forward lean. Also it is not the shoulders that are engaged slightly it is their trapezoid muscles. This is fatigue not good running technique or a triathlon technique.

    If you try to adopt someone else’s running form you just gonna get injured. Just to transition from heel strike to midfoot/forfoot strike takes years. But thats just my observation

    Taren, this advice sounds like "watch Tiger Woods golf swing and emulate it". What happens tomorrow when a different person is successful using a different approach? Especially for amateurs, shouldn't the approach be to follow rules basic rules and improve your natural form? instead of making drastic changes to emulate someone else? but hey, I am just a guy behind a keyboard empowered by the internet to comment on things that I know nothing about.

    my sports watch (not Garmin) has started to measure advanced metrics. most of them are pretty good for me but contact time is too long. Do you think shoes are that important? Nikes are great but way too expensive for me. Can I improve it with exercise only?

    This is nothing new brother. Peter Reid ran like this in the 2000s. Also Craig Alexander ran with the shoulders up high. Macca also ran like this but a little more forward than up high.

    Ummmm a heal strike is not being shown here in her form, its more of a full foot strike, and the primary audience here would not have such an analysis of there foot strike and form available to them. Entertaining, but not the most practical or useful video.

    I think that you are overstretching yourself with this analysis as other comments have alluded to. Also why not use the TM behind you when you were explaining the heel flick as that would have illustrated it much better than static demo.

    Yeah Allister Brownlee is average?? A few weeks after Kona goes to Western Australia (which is hot) breaks course record 7hr 45mins and runs a 2hr 43mins......yeah shit runner.....

      As a runner he is average or below average a the elite elevel...as a triathlete is he exceptional. Big difference.

    Forward lean should be a consequence of hinging from the ankle, not from the hip as you seem to imply. You should never hinge at the hip while running. Also, it's impossible to really know how Annie is actually striking the ground with her foot, because of the cushioned running shoe and the big heel to toe drop. With that kind of shoe, even if your foot is neutral or even plantar flexed in relation to the ground, the shoe is still going to strike the ground heel first, but that doesn't necessarily means that the runner is heel striking. Analizing foot strike with shoes on is pretty much pointless, because you don't see the actual biomechanincs of the foot. Finally, you talk about fast turn over and short ground contact time, but you also recommend a heel strike pattern, when in reality, all things beeing equal, a forefoot to midfoot landing is what minimices ground contact time (by definition, because the foot doesn't have to roll from heel to toe).

    Taren, you're out of your element with this one, buddy. She's not heel striking, and there's a slight but noticeable forward lean to both Lange's and Haug's strides.
    Idea for upcoming episode: Do the same thing, but alongside a guest host with a background in running biomechanics?
