    I taught here in Texas for 12 years, Math and physics, and the last time I taught was 2019. One of the major reasons I quit was unregulated cell phone use. Kids constantly distracted. At the beginning I could confiscate them if the teen abused it. By the end couldn’t do anything to discipline them and on top of that I would get in trouble if an administrator walked in and saw them using. Sometimes, even a parent would defend their use for safety concerns.
    Could they be used in a constructive way? Yes, especially for my class. But it was always social media used in the most destructive ways. Usually, a kids self esteem tied to it.
    Ban them!

      I’d love to at least see a study show a. Definitive proof that cell phones are damaging kids’ brains and b. The age in which this stops happening. There are a lot of things that adults do that aren’t healthy, but we don’t ban these practices. Maybe we should ban McDonalds. It’s creating a generation of obese people. Depends a LOT on the schooling level in question: I remember well in college that if I didn't have a functioning cell phone, I couldn't get home from class when it was done- so that's a significant problem.
      I think it should generally be the call of the teacher overall; sometimes that capacity to look things up should be useful; sometimes it can be downright *morally* ruinous to the students.
      Plus there's been cases in my own college schooling involving a teacher using his cellphone to inform the students of problems with attending the class on *his* part, so there's serious problems with that- and I am literally all in favor of restricting phones in school and removing all reliance upon cellphones, even reverting to payphones- with no recourse otherwise and no pay phones; just *to* isolate people.

      So the only issue I have is that there was a mass shooting in Texas not too long ago and those kids were able to contact their parents via their cell phone. I don’t like the idea of them not having that contact. Amazon also told their factory workers they weren’t allowed to have cell phones while working. Then, a tornado passed through, the roof collapsed and it turned out many people initially survived being trapped under the rubble, but couldn’t contact rescue workers and died after.

      If you want kids to socialize give them activities to do so. Not the ones where you force kids who obviously hate each other to do group projects together.
      Also phones and electronic devices are now a key part of society, using them to learn and go about your everyday lives now is required in the workforce. The amount of older people who refuse to google things to learn is astounding and they would rather ban the devices then teach their kids moderation.

However, if a parents kid comes up missing because they ditched class, the cell phone will give away their location. Or some other reason they come up missing a phone can be tracked. Number two is if they have health issues. Personality I think their are some good teachers, but not all teachers are cream of the crop. With distractions from students they may not pay attention to situations that will set them up for failer. Emergency situations is another reason. The teachers could have them bring the cell phones to them if they are using them out of turn. That's what they did when I was in school. Though we didn't have all the cool functions they have today like internet.

      There was a time, as I recall, when electricity did not exist. There's no reason for students or the rest of the world to have access to electricity, before the electrical era, once had none. Sad this is even a topic of our times.

    • @stevenalexander4721
      @stevenalexander4721 2 місяці тому

      See how that works. Just because you or others did not have access to today's technology before it existed does not mean we deny it to those of today. FYI, many schools, colleges, and universities, are moving toward an online learning presence. In my local community college, you need to have access to a phone, laptop, or tablet just to attend class now because most of the materials, especially books, have become eBooks only now. You even have to install the apps used by the schools to have access to your books, along with your school/student account. It is used to check into classes, do homework, classwork, quizzes, tests, and so much more. Even some of the local high schools have begun to adopt this method of learning.
