Use them for journal covers! Cut or tear into pieces and use for mosaics or mixed media. Use them for giftwrap. Make shadowboxes out of the cut out elements. Layer a bunch of flowers into a 3D shadowbox of a garden. Decoupage them onto other objects like vases and boxes. Bind them into a book. Create bookmarks. Cover them with plastic and line your drawers in them.

Combine 3 of those ideas. Take the stack of old paintings, scan then into a book and add notes and arrows to the book discussing mistakes and " do's and don'ts" then you have a book to market to young artists.
    Then make a collage :)

Yes! Artists can be way too quick to discard their older work, and we hear so many professionals say they regret not saving early pieces. We love the book idea- great way to organize it in chronological order, and prevents unnecessary handling of originals. Also, it's a good way to make sure you don't sell or give away a piece without getting a picture first (and don't say you've never done that!)

Use Works you not really like as a Canvas for new Ideas. Use a Black Fineliner and start to doddle in details. Pattern, Lines, Spirals ,Tangles. Use diffrent colors, Media. Make it a fun abstract Image, dont think about it what it becomes let your mind Flow. Thats how i saved Crappy Stuff , even color blobs. I also did the cut out stuf and aranged the good parts on a new sheet of Paper and keeped the good Images.
Srcabooking your Illustrations and make them a wonderful Collage with other Media.
I also use ripped to pieces Stuff for new Artworks, i mostly do Acrylic Art but sometimes Watercolor to colorize my Ink Drawings with Pen and Nib Holder. So when i have Paper screed intressthing colors a patterns shine through the Clear Gesso on the Canvas, a whole new Texture an Mixed Media Art results from here.

Thank you for your creative ideas! I like to cut old paintings and glue 4 or 6 squares to card stock for a pretty greeting card. I mix up the orientation and order so it doesn’t look like the original. I also like to cut out hearts from old painting I don’t like, sometimes embellish with a few dots or lines of black or gold and glue them to the fold over flap of the envelope for a little extra love😊❤

Never toss out your artwork. Look at what the old masters did that we are finding today that is priceless. You may never sell much of anything while you are alive but you never know who might discover something that you did that makes everything worth a lot. That’s why my daughter is the curator of all my artworks. (Storing them is her problem. Lol. ) actually I have a lot of portfolios that I store them in.

I have a “junk journal” and i use bits and bobs of paintings I’ve done that I am not giving away, or don’t have a place for and just fill in the pages of the journal with it. I do this a lot with those “warm up” pieces that I make before I do a “real” piece. I’m on page 60 of 124 of that journal, and I LOVE it!

Just thought I would share with you what I do with some of my artwork. I cut them up into perfect size bookmarks and take them to my local library to give to the kids there. They seem to really love it and inspires them to do their own watercolors. When I give the bookmark I tell them I painted it myself! And with a simple watercolor you can do this too. I thought about buying a bunch of school grade watercolors and a paintbrush to hand out to certain children who had a real interest but haven’t yet💕🎨

Great ideas. I paint for fun, why else? I mix using sheets or pads with sketchbooks (cotton only). I find it’s a nice way to keep work neat and clean while also seeing progress, hopefully, all in one place. I think the idea of photographing work and then having a book printed is excellent. Or even turn some photos into calendars as gifts. Thank you.

I keep lots of my old art in portfolio books with archival plastic sleeve pages. I also paint mostly in sketchbooks/journals of which I have tons! So they are already in book form. I just don't have enough room for all those books!

I don't know why I never thought to put them in photo books. Thanks for the idea. I decided to do one book for each of the five years that I have been painting. Book 1 already arrived and it is fabulous. I included all my beginning paintings - the good, the bad and the truly ugly. Book 2 is on order and book three is completed and ready to order. It is great to see that I have actually improved over the years. Thanks for the great idea.

I found some old art recently and had an idea to scan some old paintings and take them into Photoshop and play around with them. I was amazed that I could salvage some old stuff and turn them into useful prints for greeting cards. The process also gave me some good practice using technology. I actually gained a few new portfolio pieces by recycling some old ideas. Thanks for the inspiration. You two never disappoint!

Love the book Idea, it's amazing how many paintings you collect over the years. I have a few from when I started some 21 years ago but generally I paint on the back of the bad ones or just bin them. After all this time there would be too many for a small house. Sometime my Wife will claim them to use as a backing for the cards she makes for family and friends, birthdays, there are more each year, anniversaries and special events. Loving your work 🎨🖌️🖌️

    1. Scan it or take photos and put it in a book. Pay a company to print the book for you
    2. Put it in a time capsule e.g. in a weatherproof box and bury in backyard or just store it
    3 . Make a collage of it
    4. (For the ones you don’t like) Use them as scrap paper. For some release/closure, tear them up or burn them.
    5. Cut out the bits of paintings you like and glue/pin it on a cork board or something.
General: Enjoy the process and reflect on the art as you go. Note what you like and don’t like. Realise how far you’ve come. Let go.

From a former 1st grade teacher.....Donate to school for students to use as bookmarks, card covers, etc. so kids can write a Mother's Day note on the back or inside. Cut in strips to use as bulletin board border . The paper is so nice and thick that the old artwork can be used so many ways in the classroom.

Great ideas! I especially liked the photographing and making a keepsake kind of book, then setting the original piece free (to recycling).
I've used some old art to make envelopes. I do paper crafting stuff and I have an envelope punch board that makes custom sized envelopes.
I've also made small folded gift boxes and cut up parts of paintings into shapes to add to hand made greeting cards. Also bookmarks. And, for paintings I really didn't like, I used them in creating support or thickening layers inside handmade books and scrapbooks.

John, you talk like Jenna ......Artiests 😂😂😂 you have so much in common, I can see that ❤❤❤ I'm a paper (Junk Journal Artist and Scrapbooker) so all my watercolor paintings I don't like I cut into tags for my pockets, jounraling cards, book covers, greeting cards, a masterboard, etc. BUT John, I love the idea of creating an art book and it's a great way to give my boys my artwork, seeing I have so many plastic bins of their artwork over the years, from creating at home to all their school artwork; they are now 25 and they still want to keep it all 😂🎉 Thanks for all the tips, you are just the best and blessings to the two of you and your daughter......God sent her two great humans to raise her, love her and teach her how to be a great human ❤❤❤❤ xo

First when I saw the thumbnail with the albums, I thought you take the old paintings cut them in even size and bind them together in a book. Maybe because my wish is to learn bookbinding 😄 But your idea with the scanning and print it in a nice album is more cleaner and more neat. But yeah If you directly bind them together then there you have an original artwork book/album 😃All the other ideas are great.
