    Great to see you back Jim, and your brother. My sincere condolences on the passing of your Dad. I know the pain of losing a parent from recent experience. The tent story was great. It's funny how these memories become treasured later on.

      Thank you my friend, it's been a tough year I can't lie but our Dad wouldn't want us moping around, and right after it happened we planned to do a camp together but busy lives always spoil play so when I got the call from Ant the other week I didn't even think about it, and we picked the best day as well as it's been on off rain since then. Thanks again Jon, really appreciate you being here.

    Hi Jim, good to see you back. Firstly I'm very sorry to hear that your Dad passed earlier this year.
    Some very fond memories & some funny stories.
    Bet that was a great camp to catch up with your brother.
    I was in the forest again a couple of weeks ago. Did a few long walks around the Holy Hatch & Eagle oak areas.
    That was lovely spot where you camped ❤👍

      Thank you Stan, I did think about you on this camp, knowing you had some time down there recently. Hope you had a good time. @JimHolden Thank you Jim. I think you've inspired many including me to get out more and see these places.
      I certainly look at old oakes differently now!.
      I even took the missus to see Eagle oak haha.
      We're converting a van into a camper soon. A new chapter. We've spent many years on that Hampshire Dorset border so we want to head west and explore. Down the jurassic coast and into Devon & Cornwall.
      Plenty of tips to go at on your channel for that ❤️👍
      Have a great week and take good care 😊

    • @JimHolden
      @JimHolden  Рік тому +1

      @@StansOutdoorAdventures Yes there is plenty to explore in the west country, and a van conversion is the best way to see it, IMHO. There are so many quiet places to park up and stay the night. Love the freedom in that and the fact it's free always makes me smile. Good luck with it all and thanks again.

      @JimHolden I'll have to try make a few short videos and post them on UA-cam!.
      My parents used to take us to Looe as kids so looking forward to going back to that area.
      I was in the Royal Marines for a while and did our training in Devon and Dartmoor so lots of places to visit and reminisce.
      😊👍
      Free places haha like you say 😉 😄

    Sorry to hear about your Dad, Jim and Ant. When I was young I was desperate to go out fishing with my mates and my uncle lent me his bivvy. Strong winds and a trip to a bush for a wee - it was in the lake when I returned. Great video - much love to you both

      The dead wood in the forest is plentiful Alan and burns a treat, bit of smoke to start but once going pretty much smokeless. It's as well, as like most things these days, banned. Firstly, sorry to hear of your fathers passing Jim. It's never easy to lose your own but it brought you and Ant together. Great to see you both. And hey good to hear that story of the tent. What a bugger that was. What was your dads reaction? Reminds me of all the old gear we used to have. Well, a beautiful spot - yeah shame about the birds. See a Thrush the other day and I was over the moon - used to see and hear loads. And an Albino deer to. Fantastic stuff bro. Here's to your dad and family. Take care and be well. All the best. Mark

    • @JimHolden
      @JimHolden  Рік тому +1

      Like I said Mark, our Dad was proper old school and we expected the worst really but he was the best on that occasion. Totally got it and backed us up even took us out for the day. The memory of that weekend is still so strong and no doubt has had a lasting impression. Every time I hear a twig snap while camping, to this day I think it's the big lads, just for a moment anyway. Funny how these moments shape who we are. It's funny you mentioning the Thrush, I spotted one the other week, got him right in the camera lens, a beautiful bird and I was buzzing after seeing him but yes they are getting quite rare these days as are most song birds. I'm just back from the Lakes and was pleasantly surprised to see quite a few rare birds, even saw a Mother Roe Deer with her baby. All in the next upload. Thanks for watching Mark, hope you are well my friend.

    • @WyeExplorer
      @WyeExplorer Рік тому +1

      @@JimHolden Hey, Jim good to hear more of your dad and that incident. Blimey a twig - now that's a trigger for you. I do get it. We were bullied by skinheads when young and whenever I see people of a similar Ilk I get up tight. Association! Great to see the Thrush but how sad there aren't that many. The lakes trip and nature sounds awesome. I'll keep an eye out for the video. Me? Getting on thanks - back out hiking after a very long injury. Peace.

    • @JimHolden
      @JimHolden  Рік тому +1

      @@WyeExplorer Good to hear you are back out Mark and the injury is healing. Yes the good old days, lots of really good memories but always with triggers and I never think about being vulnerable when out camping until I hear a rustle or the twig snap then all the childhood memories come flooding back. It's as well really as the internal dialog these days is very reassuring and I can have a little laugh about it but as a teenager or in my twenties if something woke me up I'd be in terror until the sun came up. Camping out has always been a cathartic thing for me, overcoming my fears and all that but now it brings only joy, and a wonderful sense of freedom. Just wish the bird life was as active as the 1970's but it is what it is. Thanks again Mark.

    • @WyeExplorer
      @WyeExplorer Рік тому

      @@JimHolden Yeah, I've done two trails recently Jim (on my channel if interested) - the last left me a bit sore but recovering now. Yeah, triggers are deep either traumatic or good. What about scent? I love the smell of nettles because it reminds me of playing in the country when young. I am the same - camping is so liberating. I love to find myself tucked into a space, which is my sacred abode for the night. Wouldn't it be lovely to have an abundance of bird song. Very sad what intensive farming has done. Well, all the best.

    • @JimHolden
      @JimHolden  Рік тому +1

      @@WyeExplorer Hiya Mark, Scent is such a magical thing. I remember playing out as a kid, It must have been hide and seek or something like that but I was running towards the local woodlands and on the last minute threw myself down and slid under the low branches right into the bracken to hide myself. That smell of earth, grass has always stayed with me. I felt at home under there and was never found. Making woodland dens became popular after that but another strong memory. I get it with the nettles, I kinda think it's God or nature just letting us know as kids that it's where we belong instead of indoors. Yes the absence of bird song has been troubling me for a while now but what can we do. I know that when I do see a rare bird the moment is special and must be savoured, wouldn't want to take it for granted as maybe I did back in the day. Thanks as always Mark.

    One day, during a Summer heatwave, there is going to be a huge forest fire in the New Forest. Either from wild campers, glampers or just someone throwing a cigarette butt or glass bottle into the heather. And the fire service won't have the capacity to deal with it.
