- I use my Nikon Z8 and 180-600mm zoom lens to do some bird photography in my back porch blind. The last time I worked from my blind I wasn't satisfied with the results. This time things went much better.

Phil, it's always inspiring to see the level of dedication you bring to your backyard bird photography sessions! It’s impressive how you manage to transform each bird sighting-whether it’s the delicate colors of the Carolina Wren or the textures on the Downy Woodpecker-into such vivid portraits. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for such a kind comment!
Once again you made some great images Phil. I love that you show all of the birds that come to your perches rather than just showing the "pretty" ones only. I think all birds have elements of beauty to them. Cheers my friend.
@@PhotoGearFun thank you! I agree even the plain birds are pretty in their own way.
Hi Phil, great job, my favorite was the cardinal 🤗
@@PamHaynes-oo3ck thank you! Several commenters have mentioned that one. 👍
Some great shots in there Phil. That hide is so cool 👍
@@adrianalfordphotography thank you, Adrian!
Great shots from the blind! Looks like a great combo the Z8 and 180-600mm.
@@ses4vols thank you! I have a lot more videos from the blind in the queue because Heather had surgery and I couldn’t go far from home but to keep things interesting I use all sorts of unusual gear.
Just love my 400 4.5. I ended up repurchasing the 180-600, it is such good value.
I don’t think I will ever get the 400 4.5 but I’ve heard nothing but great things about it.
You got some beauties that day Phil. Happy birding 🙂
@@koolkutz7 thank you! Happy birding to you as well!
Great video Phil and some lovely photos. Well done!
@@RichardCookphotography thank you, Richard!
great captures...I have all the same birds on my backyard perches including the chipmunk to
@@woodymallory9058 thank you, Woody!
Wonderful photos. The male house finch stands out.
@@babs274 thank you!
Love the photos and wonder if you blurred the background in post.
Thank you! No, there are no artificial blurs in these images. My subjects are around 10 feet away and the background is around 20 feet behind that. That makes for some naturally blurry backgrounds naturally even with an f/6.3 lens.
Our Titmouse population is pretty bold. I think they would eat out of the hand. I created a enclosed soldier grub feeder with a hole just big enough for blue birds to enter. So far the Titmouse is the only bird that figured out how to enter it. The birds have been emptying our seed feeders in a day. I would need to put up a blind to get closer to the blue jays. Right now is a good time to photograph Ringneck pheasants. Also seeing grouse from time to time.
I love the Titmouse this time of year.
The 180-600 is glued to one of my Z9’s……it is by far ahead of anything in the price range of any manufacturer.
It is a fantastic lens, especially for the price even after the price increase.
@@PhilThach I don’t remember ever seeing an increase after years on the market, speaks for the quality this beast, thanks Phil, keep up the good work.
The 180-600 went up $200 from $1699 to $1899 in the US.
Sony’s 200-600 is still sharper wide open, overall great performance on both lenses 👍
Hi Phil, I heard the Z8 only got 20fps maximum, seems very low for birds. Is there a higher frame rate for the electronic shutter for raw format?
@@Peteryzhang you can do 20 frames per second raw and 30 frames or more per second in JPEG. I have never used it in the 20 frame per second mode. I normally shoot it at eight frames per second. When we go to Florida next spring, I will try out the 20 frame per second mode but normally that’s more than I need.
@PhilThach Thanks Phi.
Nice video Phil, I really like that 180-600. I am a real fan of Nikon, you can't beat their color science or the lenses. You had some really beautiful colors on those images. I have a special place in my heart for the titmouse. Keep up the good work. Are you still using your 200-500?
Thank you! Yes, I have a video in the pipeline where I used my D500 and 200-500.
Phil, they are all awesome but the northern cardinal is my favorite. You are fortunate to have that blind in back. And you know, I like shooting in harsh light lol. Between the 180-600 and 200-500 f mount - have you compared them?❤
@@JonnyPink65 thank you, JP! The 180-600 has better range, obviously. It also focuses faster and I like that it is an internal zoom. The 200-500 is cheaper, works with more cameras and is a continuous F5.6. Both lenses are sharp. I have a video coming up from the blind using the D 500 and the 200-500. I got some really nice results with it.
@@PhilThach Thank you. I ask because I want to rent a Nikon set up again. I was disappointed with the 180-600 compared to the 200-500 or 500 PF adapting them to the Z bodies. Of course the body I was using the 180-600 was on the new Z6III and it was dismal. 🤗💖
I see your vdo regularly. I saw one on canon rf 100-500 f/7.1. I wish to know your experience with these two lenses. If someone asks you whether he should buy nikon z8 +180-600 combo or canon r7+ rf 100-500 mm combo for birding, what will be your suggestions to him?
If you need light gear, get the R7 and 100-500. If you can handle a little more weight, the Z8 and 180-600 is better.
"What the world needs is more Tufted Titmouse photos, and I am happy to help." -- Phil Thach. Stealing this quote, Phil, 😄 Nice video. Tufted Titmouses (Titmice?) are one of my favorite backyard visitors, too. In what part of the states are you located? I heard a very vocal Eastern Phoebe around 3:55; ours are long gone here in Kentucky. Lots of lovely shots you got here! I use a portable blind in my backyard (Tragopan brand), and I make a bunch of perches, too. Have you ever used homemade suet to stuff in small holes in the side of perches to attract birds? I find that works really well to get birds on the sides of vertical perches. Enjoying your channel! (I am a newcomer to Nikon just this past summer, from Sony, and also use the Z8 and 180-600 for bird photography). Cheers.
I hope to make homemade suet and stuff it in holes in logs at some point, but so far I have not done that. This video was made a few weeks ago. I think my Phoebe‘s may be gone now as well. Thank you!
Everybody is getting new phones these days... I feel like I am falling behind...lol. You and those tufted titmouse photos...haha. I love those little guys too though so it is all good. I also just now realized that I once again misidentified a woodpecker in my upcoming video... Your backyard blind makes for some really good photos too,... this is making me think about building one too...
@@davidsaylors it’s nice to be able to make a video and good photos without leaving the house. Anytime you need help on a bird identification just text me a picture and I can help you. I don’t mind at all. I just wanted the new phone for the USB-C port. The 15 had USB-C as well but my 14 was only a year old at that time so I waited until the 16 came out.
Wouldn’t you say Nikon is the current leader for wildlife with their lenses and newest cameras?
@@dccoletrain I’m would.
@@PhilThach that high end Canon glass is so expensive. I know my uncle loves his Z8 even though he’s not a wildlife guy.
Great shots as always. But I won’t lie. I miss Banff. 😃
@@TimChilders thank you! I miss Banff too! The funny thing is for the Banff videos, I traveled across the continent and into a different country and made photographs of some of the most beautiful locations on earth. For this video, I stepped out onto my back porch and made photographs of common birds perched on sticks that are screwed onto the hand railing of my back porch. This video is performing better than any of the Banff videos. 🤷♂️
