For unrestricted views I use Auto AF with bird detection as Steve Perry recommends. I was sceptical as it will focus where the camera thinks it should, but it locks onto birds straight away and then you can engage 3D tracking if required. For single point I use Custom C2 1x1 with bird detection. When I need no bird detection I use single point from the Lfn-1 button, but this is rarely required. Great video, thanks.

@@peterlooper7956 interesting. How does that setup fare shooting through foliage? I might have to give it a try. Cheers 🙂

Excellent tips. I will be trying out these auto focus settings. Currently, I have the video button set up to switch between single point, 3-D, W_C1. I never thought about assigning the 3-D tracking to the F1 button. I may have been doing this all wrong this whole time. New subscriber. Cheers Ron from Tennessee USA

Ahh that's a good idea, setting the video button - never thought of that! I may have to start using it for something haha
I found F1 is in an easier spot to reach, but give it a go, see if it works for you.
Thanks for the sub Ron, cheers!

Cool...I use a customized W-C 1 or 2 as a single point that does have bird eye detect as another option.. I put cycle through the settings on the video button...

@@musiqueetmontagne nice! that’s not a bad idea either. I have a cycle through button too, makes it a lot easier

Same here. c1 as a single point c2 as 5x3. F1 cycle between C1/C2 and af-on as 3D.. same combo:z8 with 180-600. Works best for me at the moment.

Nice to watch another fellow Aussie birding UA-camr. Some excellent tips thank you. I tend to use Single point (best for the birds in foliage as you say), then Wide area Large and 3D for the birds more out in the open.

To lie in all that requires such dedication. I have exactly the same camera/lens combination. Thanks for the tips!

Hey Ken sorry for the late reply, the gimbal head is the Benro GH5C carbon fibre. And the plastic frying pan looking thing the gimbal is attached to is the Naturescapes SKM-II Skimmer Ground Pod II. Cheers

Great video, thanks. What is the benefit of using bank C (shoot) with custom A.

@@57sapke thank you, thanks for watching! I use bank C just for wildlife, so a fast shutter for photos and video (4k 100fps).

As soon as I saw all that poo on the ground, I knew you were somewhere in Tassie. You might say it's scattered with scat.
