If you go back to the 80's when this was one of the best available, the fragmentation was part of the reason these worked so well. The Remington scalloped 125's were the highest rated and also had near explosive performance.

I enjoy seeing the 357 Magnum's power on display and everyone acknowledging it's power. The reason I enjoy it is that the 357 Sig equals the 357 Magnum's power in the 125gr and 158gr weight class but doesn't get the recognition it should get. The 357 Sig getting a velocity of 1600 fps and more with a 125gr bullet out of a 6 inch barrel is easily done.

  • @dubletreltinc.367
    @dubletreltinc.367 3 місяці тому +5

Thanks for the testing. Makes me appreciate 357 sig out of 5 inch barrel with very comparable foot-pounds of energy to the 125 tested in the Python with the six inch barrel. This from a 115 grain xtp. My current load averaged out of 10 rounds 1630 fps with 678 foot-pounds of energy. Havent tried 125s in the 357 sig yet as I can put a little more powder behind the 115s and have been happy with the result. Couple that with the ability to be semi auto and take magazines, I'm not sure why 357 sig hasn't caught on more yet. However, its picking up steam as I just recently discovered how well it actually does and am now fully invested in loading and shooting it.

The Bullet and the Performance looks like the old Federal Classic 125 Gr JHP that was so popular and street reliable, back in my Police Revolver Days. This was the load that was declared "King of the Streets" back in the late 70's and early 80's. The Remington was popular also, but everybody wanted the Federal Loading for duty. As a Firearms Instructor in those days who was involved in the investigation of all Officer involved shootings with my Department and several other smaller departments around us, I can say that this was an absolutely devastating round and I personally never saw it fail in the shootings I saw or read reports on. Our Department issued the S&W Model 65 4" and "Defectives" carried the 3" Heavy Barrel. Officers had the option for a Model 19 or 66 with a 4 inch and also the 2 1/2" barrel for plain clothes and off duty. The recoil was a little stiff out of the shorter barrels, but we always had good performance, no matter the gun.

The federal 125 grain hollow point was the best first shot fight stopper in the 1970s and is still the best first shot fight stopper to this day. The fragmentation of that Bullet Running an excess of 1400 ft per second or higher because that's what I used to load in my 357. Accounts for why that weapon was so devastating. Because when it fragments it doesn't stop damaging tissue.

Often for nightstand duty I bring out my Taurus 627 tracker with a 6.5" ported barrel. That thing shoots like a dream with low recoil and high accuracy. I highly recommend that 7-shot revolver. Currently, I'm using Federal Hydra-Shok 130 grain low recoil ammo. However, I may have to pick up some of this ammo if it's cheaper and performs just as well. To me that performance looks perfect as I personally like multiple wound channels created by fragments in a self-defense round. But for hunting I prefer rounds that don't fragment too much so I'm not accidentally eating any of that in my meat (or anyone I'm feeding that meat to).

The good Ol' Federal 125 SJHP. Probably the most effective defense load made for a handgun, with the Remington 125 SJHP a close second. These bullets are the exception to the rule that the best defensive handgun bullets stay intact. These things expand fast and those fragments create all kinds of nastiness while the cup and core keep trucking for incredible penetration.
On the occasion I carry my Rugers or my Highway Patrolman they're loaded with these. I don't use them in my K frame Smiths, even my 66s and 65 gets .38 Special after I ruined a forcing cone shooting this stuff. Cracked? Hell no it blew a chunk out of it.

This is the classic full-powered 125g SJHP made by Fed, Rem, and Win back in the day (1970s), and it had a reputation for putting down BGs like a bolt of lightning ⚡️⚡️⚡️ VERY fast, lightly constructed by today's standards so it opened & fragmented explosively, core penetrated adequately, with big flash & big KA-BOOM. I'm just guessing, but I'd bet that ER surgeons and coroners very quickly learned to recognize GSWs with this uniquely messy 125g signature!
This round clearly has the disorienting flash-bang ingredients for "psychological stops," plus ragged-edged penetration to the vitals, plus high-vel fragmentation shredding a horrific wound channel. I hope the old-school cops will chime in on this video and tell us what they saw this round do on the street.
Its downsides were/ are: disorienting to the shooter who practices only with milder .38 SPL ammo, shaky performance against barriers (esp. automobile bodies & windshields), and it's hard on K frames due to flame-cutting of the top strap. It gave rise to the L frame, to the maxim of "train with the ammo you carry," and I think it proved very difficult to score highly on extended police quals of 50-ish rounds, esp. with weak-hand and rapid-fire stages. Problematic in low light, too, if you need more than an initial 1-2 round burst to solve your tactical situation.
In my estimation, it's *handgun perfection* in a close encounter with 1-3 BGs, but sub-optimal in an extended firefight; thus, it's great for SD/HD/CC, but too one-dimensional for today's general-purpose LEO duties.

🇦🇺😎👍You know the 357 mag is my friend 😉👍🏁….Wow , fantastic velocities 🏁…we haven’t got any of that stuff down here yet…devastating 😳…imagine how devastating the results would be out of a carbine rifle…🇺🇸🏁fantastic results mate🏁🇺🇸

my thoughts is that if you could find it at a good price, this would be just about the perfect 357 round to both train and protect with. you would not have to worry about the difference in point of impact between your training ammo and your duty ammo. a 4 inch would be just right.

Nice test Tools, really good results. As for the fragmentation, I'll take it along with that amount of penetration. I can imagine the surgeon looking at the task ahead when he sees that wound.
    Have a great weekend.
Be vigilant and always be safe my friend.

Out of the snubbie, this stuff averaged 1067 feet per second and 315 energy foot pounds at 50 yards. Nothing special, but we've all seen 9mm stuff that barely puts out those kind of numbers at the muzzle.
Out of the 6" gun, the ammo averaged 1354 feet per second and 508 energy foot pounds at 50 yards.
This stuff is showing why .357 magnum has been the king of stopping power for so long.

Pretty sure that is the same bullet they loaded in the old 357B. Back then it had nickel plated casings. I have some of each and can't tell the difference but need to chrono it.

Good test. I like the 6” python. It put the horse power in that 357. I picked up some hornady black in 357 mag 125 gr. I’m going to run 7 with my 686-6 and see how they hit. I picked up 2-25 round boxes.

I love running 357 mag it's one of the funner handgun rounds i own and you can run 38 special too.. i prefer the hot stuff for defense but for plinking the 38 special is pretty nice.. the fire ball and recoil of the 357 is addictive lol might not be a heavy bullet or big around like a 10mm or 45 but they are always moving really fast and I imagine it's a pretty potent round

Surgical nightmare! Damn! I'll admit I am NOT a fan of wheelguns except as a last ditch carry (i.e. ankle gun) but at least with this load? It would be worth it. Now if you're Rick Grimes hunting down zombies? As long as you got one of those in the dome of each of the undead? You're in good shape!

Ah. The Python escaped the safe. The jelly jumped pretty good out of the Python. I think I should get some of this and run it out of a 4''' barrel. I don't like the frag but do like the energy dump. That should bust a bone and put it somewhere else.
Nice test. I like the .357.

Awesome test!! Love the silver snake, absolutely beautiful! Is it a newer model Colt?
As for ammo performance, it did exactly what it was supposed to; it is after all the goldilocks weight for .357Mag. Winchester, Remington both have a similar load to this in 125gr, all SJHP's; maybe worth looking for those to test?

Had the 3" barrel Taurus 605 .357 magnum been used instead, then we'd see a substantial increase in velocity and kinetic energy from the 2" version he was using for this test. Just my observation.
