Great info again, Tend to top mine up when it reads 0.5/half way point with half a litre and that seems to always register fine. Before I have tried 0.3 of a litre top ups and it didn’t register, then I would add some more and a little more and then it would register! But not always correctly correspond to the total amount I have actually added😢. I know the manual says run down to 0 then add 1 litre! But I don’t like to see 0😬😁
I'm experiencing the same issues on my m5 , I think I'll do the same on the next oil change. Great series of videos for the m5. By far the best on youtube!
Very interesting, thank you for sharing this. How often do you find yourself needing to top off the oil? Mine usually gets low every few hundred miles or so. I do drive it hard; it's very rare to not do a least one pull to redline when driving it.
In nearly 5 years of ownership I’ve only had to top it up once between oil changes. It gets driven hard, but I don’t drive it as often as I’d like, and it gets frequent oil changes so possibly doesn’t get a chance to drop too much between changes. I’m pretty sure my oil level sensor is not reading right anyhow
I've had my M5 for about 116k miles of its current 178k miles. I have to add 1 liter every 1100-1300 miles depending on driving style. If you need oil every 300-500 miles, changing the PCV at the back of the valve covers will solve the issue. They are stuck closed, meaning that oil isn't draining back into the sump, causing it to build in the intake and then be burned in the combustion chamber.
@@112hounddog Thanks for the tip! I also know I do have an oil leak, as I will leave some drops when parked. Usually like a few drops when parked for a few hours, nothing outrageous.
B11 01 06 EngineMarch 2006 Technical Service SUBJECT S85 Engine Oil Level and Oil Service Information MODEL M5, M6 SITUATION The BMW TIS and Owner's manual state an engine oil capacity specification of 9.3L with filter. Using this quantity during an oil service may result in overfilling. The approximate capacity, when performing an oil service, is closer to 8.8 liters following the procedure outlined below. The S85 engine is equipped with a quasi-dry sump oil lubrication system. For this reason, the primary oil pump contains two oil pumps and is driven by a chain connected to the high pressure VANOS pump. One of the pumps is a duocentric design which pumps oil from the front oil pan area, ahead of the power steering gear, back into the main rear oil sump. When performing an oil service it is important that the oil in the front oil pan area is pumped into the rear sump before the engine oil is drained. To do this, follow the procedure outlined below. PROCEDURE Refer to TIS procedure RA 00 00 610 Engine Oil Service (S85) and follow all safety precautions. Important notes! • Check for overfilling, using the BC function as described below, before draining the engine oil. If the engine is overfilled, additional oil may remain in the front area of the oil pan even after performing the extended idle, as described below. If the engine is found to be overfilled, correct by draining the oil filter housing (approx. 0.4 liters), reinstall housing drain plug, and recheck the oil level. Repeat this procedure, as needed, to obtain a correct oil level before beginning the oil service procedure. The S85 displays the amount of oil above or below the MIN mark. For example: a reading of 1.0 would indicate the maximum allowed oil level which is 1 liter above the minimum. An oil level maintained between the MIN and MAX marks is recommended. Refer to the owner's manual, the ST505 M5 E60 Complete Vehicle training manual, or attachment: S85_Oil_Level.PDF, for a list of possible displays. 1. The engine must be run at idle, while at operating temperature (engine oil temperature greater than 70°C), for one minute with the vehicle stationary in a level workstall. This procedure will pump the majority of the oil from the front oil pan area to the rear sump immediately prior to draining. 2. Follow the repair instructions for draining engine oil and replacing the filter element and sealing rings. 3. Re-fill the engine oil with 8 liters of Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Oil. 4. Start the engine and run until full engine operating temperature is reached (engine oil temperature greater than 70°C). An oil level reading in the instrument display, using the on-board computer button can now be performed. To perform a "Quick Measurement" oil level check using the BC function, press and hold the BC button for greater than two seconds to begin the test. 5. Once a level reading is displayed, correct by adding the calculated the top off quantity, if needed, as described in the repair instructions. Never overfill above the MAX Additional Information! Any top off of 0.5 liters or less will not be indicated as a change in the oil level display until the vehicle is driven for an extended time. The "Long - Term Measurement" is the preferred method to achieve the most accurate oil level reading. This analysis of the oil level signal, by the DME, can take some time to complete depending on various engine operating conditions while driving. Important! At the1200 mile running-in inspection, the CBS reset must only be performed using the GT1/DISplus. This ensures that the DME changes the oil level calculation algorithm used for the break-in oil to that needed for the Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Oil. Performing this initial CBS reset through the instrument cluster will not make this algorithm change and fluctuations in the displayed oil level may result. This status is displayed in the Diagnosis test module path for the Oil Condition Sensor: Function Selection / Complete Vehicle / Drive / Motor Electronics / Oil Supply / Oil Condition Sensor. It is also recommended to use this reset procedure for all subsequent Condition Based Oil Services as well.
The best way to read the oil level IMO is to use INPA when car is off. I know the BMW states to do it with engine running and with certain parameters but it seems that around 60mm level with cold engine not running is equivalent to oil level full. I find this more safe, especially before longer trip as I add oil before even starting it.
I've got a 2006 E60 M5, just had to change the gaskets on the 2 oil pumps (pain in the ass job) oil change at the same time Got aprox 8.5 litres of old oil out, (level reading was saying 0.6) put 9L back in and did a warm up... Reading 1.2L Usually I put around 8.5L fresh oil in and do a warm up and then top off Never had a problem with the oil level reading and I always run the oil down before changing, and pretty much end up adding 9L in
Indeed - it can be maddening keeping the oil levels right. It requires a little experience dealing with it - and a lot of faith that your engine won't implode - to keep your head on straight when it's not registering. I've gotta say, Gav, under the hood your car looks brand new! Do you clean it with a toothbrush, or does it somehow just not get dirty?
The oil level reading in my M5 is nuts! It’s certainly not as bad as this with the 1 series which also has no real dipstick. I’ll get the level sensor changed out and see how we go. Yeah the M5 gets cleaned regularly, engine bay, leather, paint- the lot. I find if I clean it regularly, it doesn’t take much to keep on top of it- ua-cam.com/video/jI7dQmOmU7I/v-deo.html
@@MTechGuy This is true. The black paint takes some work, though. The M3 is grey, and smaller, and I find it takes about a third the time (and, let’s be honest, a third as much of everything else) as the M5. Not that I mind; it’s a gorgeous, wonderful machine.
This is my dream car and when I get my hands on it your chanel surely will be helping me geting to know the car better

That’s not a bad way to do it, so long as it’s no more that .5, as any extra it won’t show until it’s reached an additional .5

Thanks so much man. If yours is pre Nov 2006 it’ll have the inferior oil level sensor like mine
Great info.
the bmw tsb does say to only top up .5 ltrs
Any top up less than .5 litre won’t show until long term oil reading is completed, which’s takes some driving to complete

this quantity during an oil service may result in overfilling. The approximate capacity, when
performing an oil service, is closer to 8.8 liters following the procedure outlined below.
