I wholeheartedly agree with this statement!
To add to your correct observation: If you listen to The Rentals and to Chopper One, you'll realize what made the Blue Album so special, and why it's such a standout among the rest of Weezer's catalog. Sharp, Cropper, and Wilson had more significant impact on that album than what's revealed in the liner notes. (And probably the royalties.) In fact, for my money, "Now Playing" and "Return of the Rentals" are considerably better than anything =W= released after the Blue Album. Wilson did his own thing, too, called The Special Goodness. I saw them at an underground club circa 1999/2000. His sound was definitely the widest outlier imo. I'll never forget the haunting lyrics "..be careful what you wish for!" and still have intrusive rememberances of that line from time to time.
Matt losing his faith in humanity at end of the video is probably my favorite part
The Rentals were the first show I ever went to as a teenager. February of 1996 in Philly. I still love this band...they're still pumping out great songs. Q36 is a phenomenal record.

Holy Shit, what a rad song, The Rentals are so underrated, I always wonder how legendary Weezer would've been if Sharp had stayed, it's sincerely sad to know that something legendary will never be discovered, thankful to have went with Sharp and The Rentals.

As much as I want to agree with you, had =W= been less dysfunctional, maybe we would have missed out on the Rentals and that Chopper One album? When I was 17 I loved Weezer and was basically a Rivers superfan. But discovering the Rentals and Chopper One was like a first look at the cracks in the veneer. ("Hmm, that sure looks like Matt Sharp?" Then moments later, "and wow, that looks like Patrick Wilson, too. What's up with this?") Eventually I started to perceive a certain member of =W= as a despot who seemed a little too eager to take all the credit. It broke me as a Weezer fan. Present day I consider myself more of a "Blue Album fan" and not really a Weezer fan ..almost at all.

I actually stopped caring about The Rentals after their debut album and it was a couple months ago that I randomly heard Elon Musk Is Making Me Sad and damn that was one of the best things that i had heard in a while. I'm looking forward to listen to the whole album! Cheers from Iran!

2:16 Rev Bob Joyce. For the past 2 years I have tried to tell myself he's not Elvis, but I really have to convince myself he isn't. Judge or think whatever you want about me. Reading the comments on his videos is pretty astounding too. So many people believe he is Elvis and I still can't believe this has never hit mainstream media. Really glad Matt slipped this one into the video. Wonder what his take is on it. Look into Rev Bob Joyce. Just hearing his voice is reward enough.

I learn about Weezer but after listening to all of the rentals (so far) it 10 times better new and maybe 2000s Weezer, some songs are better then Pinkerton songs which is my forth favorite album ever
