'Star Wars' Wins Best Costume Design | 50th Oscars (1978) ►► ua-cam.com/users/shortsyiubqw1Mpjo
I like how there are people dressed in 18th century gowns and nice suits, then there's fucking Darth Vader.
They should've gotten a TIE Fighter Pilot up there too, because that costume is badass. I have a cosplay of that character and wore it proudly to several conventions.
the ol' "ol' timey vs new future" effect
Haha IKR! XD
Every time Darth Vader appears: RUN!!!
A beautiful metaphor for the impact Star Wars immediately had on the world. Everything had changed.
To everyone saying Star Wars didn't deserve the award, think about it. No one remembers those other costumes. Many were simply a recreation of of historical outfits (you don't need to be overly imaginative for that) and one was Airport 77 - gimme a break. The Star Wars costumes on the other hand are iconic. Half the people on the planet can probably recognize Darth Vader and they were all very original.
What baffles me is how this is the only time _Star Wars_ has appeared in this category. I'd argue that the costumes have only improved and updated themselves with each new film.
This is something that I 100% have to agree with. Like... there isn't much of a creative process when you have to re-create something that already exists. However, I can guarantee you at least 99% of all the costumes have to be made from scratch and that is a hell of a lot of work. Oh... these were truly more civilized days for the Oscars
True .
People can recognize Darth Vader and probably never seen Star Wars before that’s how iconic it is.
@Paul WT Phantom Menace was nominated for Best Sound; Best Sound Effects Editing; and Best Visual Effects. It did not win any of those. It did win the Saturn Awards for Best Costumes and Best Special Effects. In the 2000 Oscars it was competing in, The Matrix won Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, and Best Sound Effects Editing; Topsy-Turvy won Best Costume Design; and Sleepy Hollow won Best Art Direction.
We are so use to Star Wars. When you watch this - that's when you realize just how different Star Wars really was back then.
+William Wright Even the reaction of the croud is different
+José Marco Segura Jaubert how
Will Wright III Right, Wright! They had little respect for Star Wars at the time.... begrudgingly gave the award to a "silly film". It's a long tradition for critics to hate on Star Wars. I did not know any of the other nominees.
Very true.
Clearly ahead of its time, you don't realize it as much until you watch this
How akward is it for all the costumes to be classy and here is Star Wars
It's awkward alright, they just can't compete with the classiness that is Star Wars!
@@Obi-Wan_KenobiHello there
I can't imagine all of those period piece nominees expecting to win over Star Wars.
Especially today, imagine an MCU film winning over some award season period peice.
They secretly expected to lose to Star Wars.

Now THIS is how Costume Design should be presented every year!
Star wars had deserved to win because before that no one had seen something like that and now they're iconic
Man, four of the nominees were from period costume dramas and only one from "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away".
"Eh, let's sit that Star Wars guy way in the back." Any farther and he'd have been in the parking lot.
+Mumblix Grumph .."in the far, far, away back....."

A long time ago in a bench far far away...
This made me "snicker".
This made me *BUST OUT* !
Sad reality with the Oscars show. Technical people are sat way back. They want the recognizable stars up front, even if they weren't nominated that year. Notice how Jack Nicholson is always front row?
So so funny, all boring elegant old style dresses, and then out come Darth Vader and a bunch of storm troopers, and then it wins
I bet thos designers were probably peeved
They aren't really "boring" I quite like them lol
Exactly
Lol
I feel like the orchestra knew who was going to win, since in addition to playing the Cantina theme for the Star Wars costumes, they followed up with a later portion pf the main theme as all the costumed models exited the stage (and then broke into the early part of the main theme after the winner was announced).
All the other costume designs come directly from known looks of other eras. Anything completely original like the Star Wars outfits would have to be the favorite to win. :-)
This was back when the Academy Awards were fun to watch. They really put on a show; now they rush through all the nominees as if they were European cities on a bus tour.
+AmusedChild But maybe without the stairs. I can't believe none of those women in dresses, or bucketheads fell down the stairs.
Agreed. These people also had some CLASS about them, using the ceremony to celebrate their craft of filmmaking, NOT as a political forum!
Oh, I'm sure that all took some practice; maybe lots of it. I wouldn't doubt if at least some of the women may have had some experience in modeling, I duuno. In any case, it was classy, creative, and in good taste!
WTF does Marlon Brando, his annoying narcissism, or 1973 have to do with Star Wars, 1978, and good entertainment? "It's always been like" what? No, the Academy Awards have not always been like a speed reading session because some of the awards given today did not exist previously. Now, begone.
Oh, it is? I wouldn't know. What do you define as a literary "rage"? As a published writer and scholar, I'm just waiting with baited breath for your perspicacity and acumen.
You know what is not cute? You. Begone. Adults are talking.
This was one of the most deserved Oscar ever. I'm not the biggest fan of the Star Wars costume design, but, boy, is it memorable and still culturally relevant several decades later. I can't think of another Oscar winning costume design that has achieved the same.
The most impressive costumes of the Cinema history.
Star Wars created a look that was never known before. Every aspect of this movie was cutting edge.
Nominees: wears dresses, suits, gloves, etc.
Star Wars: TEHE
Now why don't they do Oscar fashion parades like this anymore?
Time I think
Because the womens thank you speeches takes like 30 minutes each
LordDavid04 I think this is awesome. 😀
They've done this in recent years.
They prefer to project parts of the movies now.
He almost looked embarrased to win, bless him.
monsterlair It's the only science fiction costumes in the bunch. Plus, the others are dressed realistically or historically.
Nonamearisto
Yes, that was kind of my point.
+Obscene Vegetable Matter The organizers also sat him waaaaaay in the back of the auditorium, probably because they hadn't counted upon him getting the gold statue, either.
People at the Oscars could be heard laughing -- LAUGHING -- at Star Wars! Ain't no one laughing anymore!!

They voted for Star Wars, but were laughing at how it contrasted with all the other costumes.
Darth Vader on stage at the Oscars. :D Didn't see that coming.
It'd be weird if they still did this kind of fashion show thing.
That's nothing...did you see Isaac Hayes' performance of "Shaft"...now THAT was an Oscas fashion statement....
Alec Guiness almost won Best Supporting Actor for Obi-Wan Kenobi : respect

@@God-nr5oe I know he bashed the dialogue, but a lot of people did.
I love the Tusken raider dancing to the music, and I love the fact they got such a big cheer when they came out, Star Wars was truly revolutionary
People forget Star Wars was nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture
It's a good thing "Star Wars" won. If it had lost, Darth Vader probably would have used his "Force choke hold" to strangle the winner and Natalie Wood.
I'd've liked to have seen a comedy bit where, as John Bollo walks off the stage, he finds Vader blocking his view. Vader holds out his hand for the Oscar statue, and Bollo, cowed, gives it to him. Vader holds up the Oscar in a "power gesture," then stalks offstage, followed by his storm troopers.
Star Wars really stands out there, now you look at the character designs and costumes in the biggest modern day movies, you realise how much SW changed the landscape of cinema.
Star Wars is now a literal empire (but we don't talk about the sequels because they are not canon)

Amazing to see my favourite actress, Natalie Wood and my favourite fictional character, Darth Vader in the same video.
Everybody has forgotten all the other movies.
People still know "Julia".
No one has forgotten Annie Hall.
if you ask me a well deserved win for star wars. there's enough reference material for period drama's . but to create a costume from pure imagination is a special talent especially when you consider costumes in other sci fi movies of the 70's
Well...not *pure* imagination. Darth Vader and the imperial military gear were definitely inspired by the war gear shown in the Japanese samurai epics that George Lucas loved.
Yeah, you know it now, but it still looks original until you compare them side by side.
This first Star Wars movie also didn't have a generous budget, and had to put most of it into inventing the new cameras and filming techniques they used. Well-done period-piece costumes do have to be researched, especially if the costumer uses authentic patterns and fabrics, but still, having to imagine how everyone should look in a galaxy far, far away was the biggest challenge.
@@user-zd2kl9yg4v looks original and is original are 2 different things
@@diadokhoi5722 Then you should be able to point out difference between these two absolutely different thing, no?
I didn't know that Star Wars costumes even reach this kind of level award. John Marlow designed this costumes which we now known as millenial's called it COSPLAYS. I am telling you his creative side at its best and the best thing of it is ICONIC.
*Mollo
Wow, did that really happen!? To see all those nominees elegant tuxedo and dress costumes on stage with Darth Vader and storm troopers was quite the incongruously delightful sight.
I really appreciate this presentation.
Like costumes ARE important and really DO deserve this kind of presentation and recognition during an award ceremony.
Natalie Wood ...so beautiful.
And she was murdered
I wish I could travel back in time and prevent her from being drowned. 😢
What a creepy joke by Bob Hope: I did makeup for you and the strippers in Gypsy. Nervous laugh follows. Too bad she didn't win any Oscars (three nominations). But _Gypsy_ did get a nomination for costume design. He could have joked about seeing those costumes on stage for the 1962-3 Academy Awards show.
Obi Wan To the announcer: *You do not want to give the award to the other nominees.*
Announcer: *I do not want to give the award to the nominees.*
Obi Wan: *You want to give this award to the white troopers who cannot aim their blasters.*
That’s egzactly how it was.
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope won 7 Oscars.
Deserved...all those others sucked!
It was just "Star Wars" then, before Lucas started messing with shit.
Dancing Tuskan Raider does it for me...
It's a shame George wasn't there to experience his amazing success. He was on vacation in Hawaii because he thought Star Wars would flop.
TotoroRosso: George WAS there, you can see him when Ben Burtt thanks him near the end of this clip: ua-cam.com/video/eMAAzS4brDc/v-deo.html.
It was during the film's opening weekend, more than half a year before the Oscars, that Lucas was in Hawaii hiding from what he thought would be bad attendance numbers and critical disdain.
With Steven Spielberg
But hey, if Lucas was at the premiere, we wouldn’t have gotten a great action adventure film and another throwback to Saturday morning matinees with Raiders of the Lost Ark.
@@hunterolaughlin He should have found a third serial to do like _Shazam!_ instead of _Howard the Duck._

They should have played the Empire music.
That music was composed 2 years later
Star wars were a real sensation at that time
It's almost 2020 and I'm here!

Welcome to 2020
2022
I like this, never saw it back then but to show off the costumes on stage..great touch
This is the Beauty of the VERY Fine Art of Cinema that is missing.
The pure creativity and production value and simple HARD WORK.
These $#!t Fest today are all about manufacturing films not designing them. Quantity over Quality.
Formula over Exploration and Money over Everything. Star Wars as simple as it is....Will always be a masterpiece to me.
This was before movies were made by computers apparently for computers.
I remember what Mark Hamill said once, during an offtake of "Star Wars", when he was dressed up as a stormtrooper - he said "how do you see through these things?".
After recently traveling through Tunisia and visiting the Star Wars film locations it's easy to see where the costume inspiration came from. Headscarves are common dessert wear as are hooded capes and long tunics. The real imagination is Vader, storm troopers and the many characters. The lightsaber was actually an upcycled piece of camera equipment, pure genius!
RIP John. Thanks for your influential work.
Should've won Best Picture. Annie Hall hasn't aged well.
I think it was a pretty good film but in my opinion Star Wars should have won.
Liquidzer0 I agree! I remember watching this live. It was the first time I had ever watched the Academy Awards. Cheered every time STAR WARS won an award! Losing Best Picture was a huge disappointment. Definitely was the best film, considering a variety of aspects.
***** "Greatest romantic comedy of all time" is like talking about the biggest mouse who ever lived. Still a small fry.
Nobody talks about Annie Hall any more except for the film that won over Star Wars. Star Wars, on the other hand is as iconic Mickey Mouse....in lives on to this day. CLEARLY, Star Wars WAS the MUCH better picture. :)
+Sammy Jenkis I agree. Though we mustn't deny that, even if you *like* Annie Hall more (and those people *do* exist), Star Wars is by-far the most well-made film of 1977. But Annie Hall is pretty great nonetheless. (Only when it's standing next to Star Wars does it kinda pale in comparison, both in scope as well as in historical significance.)
For those knowledgeable about the Oscars, the actual perceived frontrunner that year was actually the deservedly forgotten The Turning Point (which hilariously ended up leaving the ceremony like Chewbacca at the end of Star Wars-empty-handed, despite 11 nominations). Annie Hall was a *MAJOR* upset that year, and since Star Wars (let's face it) was never going to win the top awards anyway, we should be thankful one of Woody Allen's best films did instead. (And mind you, I'd vote Star Wars for Picture and Director *EASILY*, but Annie Hall would be my 2nd choice...well, for Picture, I'd vote The Goodbye Girl as my 2nd choice, and for Director...Spielberg was nominated for Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, so that would've been my 2nd choice...but Annie Hall would be firmly on the bronze podium.)
In the end, let's just be thankful (I write this comment on Thanksgiving day.) it won 6 competitively (Score, Sound, Art Direction, Costume Design, Film Editing-haha, Lucas' ex-wife Marcia has an Oscar and he doesn't XD-and of course Visual FX) and 1 specially for Ben Burtt.
What a stellar group!! Karen Black & Eleanor Parker!! And Natalie at her peak. Wonderful.
I love how maria from west side story played Natalie wood was an amazing actress.
You should see Rachel Zegler’s Maria. She’s a young triple threat
3:40 the tusken raider on the right jamming to the music 😂
You can tell they can't see shit lol
Everyone knew who was going to win.
They got it right. The costumes of Star Wars are recognized universally right to this present day as iconic cultural symbols.
so well deserved, the fact that this movie didnt win best screenplay, director and picture is an absolute crime
this is simply the best, not only star wars winning best costume design over contemporary dresses, but the whole presentation is just hysterical!
Shocking he would not mention McQuarrie...

I remember watching this on black and white tv set. So sad seeing a beautiful actress like Natalie Wood who died three years after this event.
Liked her in _Brainstorm_ which had to be saved in the edit.
the audience laughing at storm troopers " star wars, what a silly little movie "
literally a bunch of dresses versus never-before-seen science fiction costume designs which (along with the special effects) revolutionized movies
was there any reason for the other nominees?
There are always at least five nominees for costume design. You're right, though, the others didn't even have the tiniest chance to beat SW.
darthstarkiller1912 wouldn't it be more embarassing to get called up despite having no chance at all rather than just say "hey it's star wars no competition"
I mean all the other costumes are nothing new.
How could STAR WARS not win this catagory?
I miss the old Hollywood glamour of Oscar shows like this.

Can't believe Star Wars didn't win best picture that year. What a shame!!
Who designed that set? It's amazing no one broke their neck. Only someone who never wore heels would think all those steps were smart. And weren't the cameramen paying attention during rehearsal? They missed half of their cue. All that staging and half of it is in the dar.
John Williams' musical score is at point and has brought this costume award justice.
back when the Oscars gave a damn
R.I.P. John Mollo.
They should have use the The Imperial March when Darth Vader appears (assuming to force choke all other nominees) and his stormtroopers enters, and they also forgot the blasters, and Light Saber.
Unfortunately the Imperial March didn't exist back then.
The Imperial March didn't exist till Empire Strikes Back. FUN FACTTT
Blasters and lightsabers, even though they're AWESOME!!!, are Props and not part of the Costumes department.
4IN14094 At the time, a disco version of the main theme with the "Cantina band" motif was a Top 40 hit, so it was very recognizable.
4IN14094 The Imperial March first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back, so it didn't exist at this time.
The other costumes were so Earthbound. The winner was out of this world. Literally and figuratively.
You can almost hear the stormtrooper thinking "I can't see a thing in this helmet!"
That was hazardous, it's a wonder one of them didn't tumble down the steps!
Just how long has Star Wars been around for? This clip brings it home.
What really stands out to a modern eye is how the Oscars back then really let the work take center stage, while the acceptance speech was just a few words. Nowadays they'd show two second clips from each film, and blather on forever.
If John Mollo is still with us, I wonder how he feels about one of his creations coming to auction this coming Wednesday with a pre auction estimate of 1 to 2 M $. It should be exciting to see what the final bid will be.
Airport 77? What were they wearing, the seat cushion?
I loved the rise of Skywalker by the way, Merry Christmas and a happy new year to everyone
I loved Natalie Wood...so sad!
3:36 the Empire IS really pretty chill.

3:28 The Storm Trooper that bumps into the other Storm Trooper....I wonder if it was the same one that bumped his head in the movie.

All the greats are gone. Bob Hope, Natalie Wood, John Wayne...
We don't have movie stars anymore with the exception of a Harrison Ford, and a few others. Sad.
I'd put forward Tom Hanks and George Clooney, and Sandra Bullock.
Another well deserved win for SW! I’ve only seen Natalie Wood in West Side Story and Miracle on 34th Street. And she looks stunning here for someone who died so young.
Please bring those presentations back!
They did it in the late 90s early 2000s. Miss those.
