Arturia Microbrute MIDI Out Mod

  • This is my process on modifying the Microbrute to have MIDI out. I battled for over a week whether or not i should attempt this. Ultimately, I decided MIDI Out on this synth outweighed the possibility of damaging it. Really happy this mod works, as it makes this device much more valuable to me. An analog synth that has MIDI Out, CV out and compact footprint. Yes please!
    I decided to go with a stereo 3.5mm jack due to the lack of available space to fit a full 5 din midi jack. A 5 din may work, however I took the conservative approach and decided on using an adapter cable.
    I spent a good amount of time practicing on non functional electronics before attempting this. The pin on the LPC2361 is extremely tiny and is tough to get a good solder joint. Only attempt this mod if you have a fine pitch soldering experience or have broken equipment to practice on first. Please take your time so you don't ruin your synth!
    References:
    Thanks to Nicolas Schulcz for proving this is possible and the MIDI out wiring diagram. Note: the standard way to wire a MIDI Out jack is to use two resistors, one for voltage and one for data (TX). So there may be ways to improve this mod. however, Nicolas solution works wonderfully so I decided to stick with his original schematic. I only made two adjustments, and that was for the solder locations for the ground and voltage wire.

    I'm an old guy (music composer, under performance rights organization BMI, Inc) and I've been playing synths since the very early 1980's. Watching videos like the one you made always amazes me. I do have an Arturia Microbrute and I wrote a few demo songs using it alone on my channel, awesome analog synth for the price.
    I probably wont do the mod' that you are showing as I don't have a volca.. but I appreciate you showing others out there that do... again really awesome that you spent your time and skill to make this video and to show others out there. - "So says MrTom.. and so it was written..."

    As I was watching I thought "damn, this would be awesome to control a Volca Keys, I wonder if polyphony would work though" And then you demonstrated it does ! I would definitely pay for such a mod on my MB, since the only reason I don't buy a Volca Keys is its need for a dedicated MIDI controller...!

      Thanks for watching.Yes I agree, I love my Volca Keys but the tiny keyboard.... I really wish MIDI out came standard on the Microbrute.

      Most likely it was never supposed to do that, my wild guess here is that arturia developed this synth using this particular chip, but used only those connections they needed. Someone else has read the specification of the chip and figured out that it is capable of something more. It's like those delays that can be forced to receive taptempo but were never intended to do so. The obvious "mod me please" products come from korg, especially when tats was in charge, they leave some solderpads open and silkscreen their purpose right next to them, as if welcoming you.

    Hi, thanks for this video!
    I'm new to this Midi stuff so may my question sounds dumb.
    What resistor do you put on the jack and what kind of adapter do you use there?

    • @spacebraincircuits1358
      @spacebraincircuits1358  4 роки тому +2

      Hello re, sorry for the late reply. You will need a 100 ohm resistor. Check the schematic at 2:42. Its a midi adapter cable going into a stereo jack. The one I am using in the video is from a Korg SQ 1 sequencer. Great little cable, works great!

      Midi out will allow you to control another synth using the Microbrute keyboard.
