Euro Vision?

When terrorist organisation Hamas launched its attack on Israelis in their homes on October 7 2023, some 1100 people were murdered by them. Somehow, the state of Israel has managed to overshadow this monsterous number with its sustained attack on Palestinians in Gaza - some reports say officials lost count after 35,000 dead. That my favourite silly, mainstream, always political telly music festival didn't expel Israel from its competition this year has just robbed the event of its joy for lots of its big fans. Big watch parties in London and Brighton have been called off, and while I see this as very akin to personal choices trying to respond to the climate crisis, for us watching just fell away as something we wanted to do this year. Normally, I look forward to it and revel in the whole week of semi finals and media gossip.

Eurovision is silly - AND it matters. Which is why their response matters. Let's hope that both joy and better judgement on behalf of the organisers return soon.
