When you buy jewelry at jewelry stores in the states, they charge the same way as the shops in Dubai. The gold is priced per gram. I have gold we bought from a shop in Chicago like that. In fact if I ever get a chance to go to the Middle Eastern jewelry shops in Chicago I'm going to buy a gold chain, maybe something else.
The most affordable way to acquire gold is to buy simple bars or coins from your local mom-and-pop coin shop. If you want a heavy necklace, or other "jewelry" from an Arab importer, you're going to be paying a large markup for manufacturing, import duties, etc, etc.

Aside fro the nice cross I bought from Lord and Taylor, the local shops have higher quality gold than you find at other places.
