I have a feeling that the "chewed gum" look might be a result of the "rocks" being glossy and roundish in shape, while magma is more matte and cracked in appearance. Still turned out to be super cool tho!
I've been a follower for years and there's a few things I need to say here: #1. I cannot with how ansolutely cute you two are. #2. I cannot with how absolutely cute you two are TOGETHER. #3. I love the "adulty" innocent puns in the video that are completely undemonetizable, kinda in the "if you know you know" sorta way. Please never ever change one bit because we need more people like you two, and please never stop making videos. I know it's too much to ask but this is the purest most unadulterated fun I've ever had.
The glow looks so cool and the color for the lava is spot on! ❤ I think the main problem with the rocks is that usually the dark crust floats on top of the lava so you’ve got a bit of a 3D-Effect going on as well as the different textures. But the clear coat you guys applied first gave both lava and rocks the same texture, both were shiny. Maybe it would be more realistic looking if you made the blade completely yellow and red with glow and added the rocks later on the outside. Maybe airbrush them on or use some kind of grout or some of the techniques people use for making rocks for miniature landscapes.
I thought the same thing! But I was thinking that maybe they should've pressed the rocks against the lava handle when it was still tacky, so the lava would be dislodged in a (hopefully) naturally-looking way
@@PrismariLaura That’s a good idea! I was thinking maybe an led strip running down the middle of the handle could be a great alternative for the glow pigment. That would give the lava resin more contrast and make it less cloudy.
I wonder if it would’ve worked to have just done the inner core the lava, whereas the two outer handles are clear coat and the rocks? That way there’s still some semblance of a “3-D effect” of the rocks being on top of the lava, but still having the handle be functional
I used to know 2 people I thought were perfect for each other but unfortunately they got divorced since the guy didn't want any kids while the girl was thinking about starting to take things a bit more seriously, at least they are still good friends but rip my childhood hahahaha , Evan and Katelyn are now the new couple channle I watch they replaced the old one for me
You know, my first thought was you could easily make the rocks out of polymer clay... I've made some pretty darn realistic lava rock beads that way, and you have absolute control over size, texture all of that
Or foam clay, or cork. Or even just paint some pumice pieces haha. The rocks they made are pretty, they look like obsidian almost but I don't think that's what the goal was lol
Okay just saw the reveal; what I would have done to save the lava-stone effect would be to attach varied thicknesses of thin textured slices of black polymer clay (baked then glued on, maybe drybrushed a little). That way it'd give it a more 3D/tactile effect as well
It's been THREE YEARS!? By the time the first resin knife video came out I felt like I had already been following y'all for a while, wow! THREE YEARS!? I was in my 20s when I started following y'all and now I'm an old maid!!
Definitely! They just need to do something to smooth out the mold; then it would be excellent. (Either that or do actual lava rock embeds and don’t cover them in resin - leave the texture on the surface.
Maybe mix some sand in the resin for the rocks and go brown and black? Also making a mold and using a slower curing resin (so they have more time to shape and detail) might help?
I'm honestly surprised they didn't just redo it. Idk, I'm usually satisfied with their final product but this one missed the mark by a tiny bit. I love this channel and i would never say this if i thought they'd see it, but to me it just wasn't quite at the quality of their usual content 🤷🏽♀️
@steemcgee5150 yeah I think they probably saw it too but just didn't have time for a redo and just went for it and hoped people would just accept it and they were probably tired of trying over and over at getting it right behind the scenes. Either that or they ran into an issue that happens to some artists (including myself) where they actually thought it looked amazing because they had sunk so much work and effort and time into it that they were in the "honey moon faze" with rose tinted glasses. And when they look at it nowadays I bet they see it the same way we do. Nothing against them. Love them to death. ❤️
This is the type of relationship I want, they have so much chemistry and they genuinely enjoy each other's presence (unlike some other UA-cam couples, or couples in general). Also I absolutely LOVE how it turned out
Only 5 seconds in and you've already made us all wonder if you really aren't "that type of channel". I can tell this one's gonna be entertaining! The axe looks amazing in the thumbnail :)
Nerdforge has a nice little hack where you crumple foil and uncrumple it for rocky textures. Do that, and THEN pour the colored resin. Let it harden without mutilating it, and see what it looks like.
It looks great in the dark! I thought the glow would be provided by LED packs in the center, but that glow powder worked great. You could even make a stand for it, like a log or chopping block that hides UV lights in a hollow. When you pull it out, it's totally charged.
I feel sorry for you not reaching your expectations but it turns out pretty cool, also it's my first time seeing your channel and couldn't stop smiling the whole video because of your synergy

I've never seen any of your videos before this and I've got to say, I've never seen such a wholesome and charming couple in this genre. Your chemistry is amazing and you seem like genuinely fun people. Also, not trying to sound like a creep so forgive me if I do, but Katelyn's hair is AMAZING
Her hair is unbelievably good and in one of their "Ask Us Stuff" podcasts, she addressed all the requests for her hair routine and it was basically Wash n go and wash as minimally as I can get away with. Smh.
The lava axe turned out pretty fire in the end!🔥🔥🔥 It’s always inspiring to see you guys cooperate and problem-solve together, and it’s fun to see the process of how the final design gets made! Cheers to y’all for confronting hot lava rocks, sharp blades, and accidental resin geysers to make this video! 🌋
Me throughout the first part of the video: y'all you're not that kind of channel! 😂 I'm glad you were able to overcome the weirdly curing black resin, and make a super cool lava axe that Evan can use his little smoke machine on 😁
It comes to my mind (not knowing a thing about resin) that maybe if you Cast It in like wrinkled aluminum foil It may reasemble more the texture of rocks. i've seen how people do that with plaster for like diorama rocks, so, maybe works! Also, sorry for my english, it's not my maternal language! Hope i make myself understood! And this comes from a place of curiosity, i do not want to sound rude, sorry if i do! Love your videos btw 💜 Edit: just finished the video and It looks so cool! You guys are so talented! ☺️
This is the first video I've seen from you guys, and awesome molten cheese axe aside, you both have such awesome energy. You're super dorky, and I can tell how much fun you had with this project.
The resin knives was the first video of yours I ever watched, and I’ve been hooked on your content ever since! (I never remember what my first video of a channel was but yours I always remember!) keep making crazy resin crafts, guys! ❤
Was it just me or did Evan and Katelyn seem particularly adorable and in love this video? I know they always do, but they just seemed extra cute in this one
I gotta say, as a resin tech, I appreciate the fact that you guys actually use good PPE for working with resin. So many woodworkers and craftspeople work without so much as a 3M respirator (and those are imperfect to say the least), so it's refreshing to see you guys using gloves and the fancy helmets, because contact with the skin can (hell, *WILL* ) cause cancer, and breathing it in can cause cancer and other problems down the line. It's especially important to wear some sort of respirator if you grind, drill, or sand into the resin as well. The particulates are terrible for the lungs, and the damage can get worse over time from even a small bit.
seriously! i know it probably takes a lot more effort than just a standard ad read but it’s absolutely worth it. i never skip them because it is genuinely entertaining and feels like an extension of their videos
I feel like building a stand for the axe which constantly shine UV light at it to make it glow would make it look amazing on a shelve. Awesome Video. Awesome Result
I'm late to this video so I'm not sure if you'll see this, but I had a suggestion if you ever do this again. For the rocks you could glue rock shapes to the actual axe handle before you take a mold of it. Then shape of them would be incorporated into the handle instead of the handle just being flat. That way it'd be more textured with the rocks on lop of the lava. Also then you wouldn't have to worry about having to use a clear layer to keep the rocks from getting buried in the lava.
Also, If you see this, just know that I love your channel and your videos are amazing! I hope you see this to know how much we viewers and subscribers love guys and y’all’s channel.
Loved the little nomnom googly eyes 😂😍 Well, you can say it looks good when its dark. For others that would be an insult 🤣🤪 But seriously, it looks great. And the bubble gum looked exactly like melted stone and not like gum. ❤
Awesome project! Two things that came to my mind: -The handle color was way duller than the body of the axe. Is it because of the texture of the original you took the mold from? what'd happen if you dremeled any texture away? -Does the UV powder shine trough darker pigments? Volcanic glass-like on regular light that changes to molten lava on UV sounds amazing. Maybe a bit of it on the rocks themselves.
I LOVE YOU TWO!!! Rain or shine... Win or fail... Mold release or no... You two are inspirational teachers! Keep it up! 😉 Yes. I love the results and all I learned thru this adventure!
Hey Evan and katelyn! If you ever doubt yourself about your content being good, don't! It's awesome everytime and makes me smile the whole video everytime! For someone like me who has a hard time finding good emotions, that's pure gold! So I want to say thank you so much for all the work you put into your content and keep going! You guys are AWESOME! much love from Germany!
It honestly turned out perfect! It’s giving me a WoW vibe for some reason and I love that lol? You guys should add like a leather wrapping or some kitschy/weathered looked bandages !! >:3
For the lava rocks, a good idea would have been to pour a thin layer of silicone in a box, then put your fireplace lava rocks on top. Once cured, remove the lava rocks and use the impressions in the silicon to make your resin lava rocks.
Seeing those Knives reminds me of them not being food-safe. But there is food safe resin out there, isn't it? Would you ever consider making a video about/with that? I constantly see people making chopping boards or something similar and I always wonder if its safe.
My understanding of food safe resin is that it's safe to have food sit on, but not safe to actually use to prepare or eat food, use as a utensil, etc. So knives or cutting boards are a no go, but a food platter made with FDA compliant food safe resin is safe in the sense that the resin won't leech chemicals into the food while the food sits on it. You'd also need to consider whether the pigments or any other additives are food-safe as well, so generally unless I made it myself and knew exactly what was in it, I wouldn't buy a resin platter and consider it food safe, personally, and I guarantee there are channels out there making things for the views and not checking for safety!
@@etherealclarity I'm not considering buying, but looking at it from a crafting perspective. Not being american sadly makes the research not especially easy, because most sources will refer to us regulations or products you can't get here, but I think it's interesting regardless. And I don't trust most channels out there either, that's why I asked Evan and Katelyn, because I'm pretty sure they'd rather be wrong on the cautious side than risking anyone's health ❤️
to help add texture to pieces like the little resin rocks, it might help to use rough sandpaper once it's fully hardened! it does kinda look... not so great, but it does look cool in the dark! I think maybe what hurt it was the texture of the handle, along with too much clear coat that ended up sort of clouding the blackness of the rock-bits, which made them stand out less against the red-yellow behind them. but it does amazing in the dark! that glow powder definitely did its job!
something that could help, lava in the parts that is glowy most of the time has a even edge between the peices, like they could all be smooshed into a solid flat peice but have been broken and seperated a little bit. almost like tiled floor, how the grout inbetween is always the same thickness to the other peices

I love the experimental nature of y'all's work. Keep it up, you huge goofball nerds!
I’m new here, but I just became a lifetime fan because of that KUNG POW reference!!!!
pay no attention to Wimp Lo, we purposely trained him wrong... as a joke
@@EvanAndKatelyn I'm bleeding. Making me the victor.
@@EvanAndKatelyn You go that way...I'll go home
Probably my favorite part of your videos is your chemistry
It looks really cool to me! That's a prime example of "trust the process" 😂 Stop doubting yourselves!
Ive been loving the long videos recently guys :)
thank you!
I was just rewatching your old videos! This notification was a great surprise to me.
Same. I was watching the brightest lightsaber video.
@@luigipowdemo6458 oh haha! I still haven't seen this one yet!
@@CrzzyCat XD you should. It's really funny.
It honestly turned out perfect! It’s giving me a WoW vibe for some reason and I love that lol? You guys should add like a leather wrapping or some kitschy/weathered looked bandages !! >:3
The axe came out perfectly awesome! The glow is epic
the fact that I've seen the exact videos you referenced in the ad made it pure gold. i never skip them
I love these types of projects ❤️
The inadvertent joke not even 10 seconds in and Evan's reaction to it already told me this is going to be a great video 😅
I love that Katelyn always picks up on the dirty jokes before Evan does. Haha
DAMN HAS IT ALREADY BEEN 3 YEARS???!?!?
I remember getting a notification for that video like it was 3 months ago ._.
I think this was one of the best sponsor segments I have ever seen and will ever see
For the lava rocks, a good idea would have been to pour a thin layer of silicone in a box, then put your fireplace lava rocks on top. Once cured, remove the lava rocks and use the impressions in the silicon to make your resin lava rocks.
I now feel like there’s gonna be a series of sharp objects made out of resin and I’m so excited for it.
I love ur videos they're so entertaining 😊
And I don't trust most channels out there either, that's why I asked Evan and Katelyn, because I'm pretty sure they'd rather be wrong on the cautious side than risking anyone's health ❤️
that button reference in the ad is just absolutely wonderful
THAT IS SO COOL- The spots where the air bubbles were just make it look so much better.
It turned out great. The way it glows...Bellissimo.
The humor has grown over the time since i started watching. Love it. 👍👍👍
these are the kinds of videos that motivate me to work on my collection of unfinished works (there are way to many)
The first thing I watched on this channel was 4 years ago(the Murphy bed build) and you guys have come so far and it almost feel like I know y’all
Ah the chaos. Love it.
Also love Katelyn’s green striped shirt. Definitely want!
to help add texture to pieces like the little resin rocks, it might help to use rough sandpaper once it's fully hardened!
it does kinda look... not so great, but it does look cool in the dark! I think maybe what hurt it was the texture of the handle, along with too much clear coat that ended up sort of clouding the blackness of the rock-bits, which made them stand out less against the red-yellow behind them.
but it does amazing in the dark! that glow powder definitely did its job!
This came out so good! Especially in the dark! You two come up with the most amazing Ideas!
something that could help, lava in the parts that is glowy most of the time has a even edge between the peices, like they could all be smooshed into a solid flat peice but have been broken and seperated a little bit. almost like tiled floor, how the grout inbetween is always the same thickness to the other peices
Try pouring a thin black coat of resin into the handle mold, break it with a hammer and again place it in the mold and do the lava pour 🙂
You two could make the most amazing cosplays outta nothing but resin
the bit missing in the blade actually makes it look like its been used so much that it eventually broke. I love it.
