As a alcoholic this is the realist message I’ve ever heard about alcoholism. Still feeling controlled not drinking and controlled if I drink so the only In between is balance. Discipline thank you Stan marsh
Facts, screw those two pricks. It be better if you could learn from other sources and on your own. But South Park definitely got a lot of metacognition behind it.
Randy: How did I manage to raise such a smart kid? Stan: I've had a great teacher. Randy: Thanks son. Stan: No, not you, my karate teacher. He's really smart. Randy: Oh
I'VE NEVER heard a more funny yet completely true/positive statement!! And South Park is so great with these!! It's something the Simpsons nor Family Guy can even come close to!! (Actually, to be completely honest... The Simpsons can sometimes actually nail this as well)
You can argue this would apply to people who use credit cards as well. I would say if you're pretty much debt free, and you can use them as little as possible, but make the effort to pay them off, you can learn discipline as well. Like Stan says best: "All or nothing is easy, but learning to drink a little bit, responsibly, that's a discipline. Discipline...come from within."
As an alcoholic, I can say that this 37 second South Park clip is fr one of the most solid pieces of advice I’ve ever heard regarding control/discipline when it comes to drinking
dude you missed the ending it was a beautiful moment between father and son Randy picks up stan and puts him over his shoulders and walks home instead of driving and walk home into the sunset just father and son its a real wholesome moment the many you find in south park
0:16-0:22 what did Stan mean by that? Did he mean that because Randy has devoted his life to drinking, he needs to drink once a while, because if he gives it up permanently, it still controls him because he now has to devote his life to avoiding drinking?
@@Mr.Coffee576 Exactly, and I think it also points to the idea, that you can dress anything that people like to do up as "addiction". To demonize it. You like to jet-ski? Do it all the time? You must be an addict... get yourself checked, druggy. Looking at it through the prism of AA, the only way you are not an addict is by constantly fighting it, constantly occupying your thoughts with being a non-addict, meeting up at boring meet-ups at pizza places to talk about how you are not addicted anymore lol. Of course that's an overgeneralization about AA, but that's what the episode tries to point out is so flawed. All or nothing, you'll never be free.
I don't know, I feel like maybe not letting alcohol totally fuck up your life by choosing to abstain from it is not exactly on the same level of "letting it control your life" as being a hopeless drunk. Most people can handle just a little drinking here or there, and good for them, but maybe don't tempt people with chemical abuse issues into going back to the bottle because "not drinking is easy".
Old comment but this episode isn’t talking about addicts, it’s talking about people who dont know when to stop. While Randy can be a jackass who drinks a lot he isn’t necessarily an alcoholic, which is why he was genuinely saying he wasn’t one when he first got in AA. This episode is for those who ‘rack discriprine’, not for those who are actually addicted to substances
You change that behavior not by discipline, but by changing your identity. Discipline simply says "I am going to be something I am NOT by gritting my teeth and not letting myself do that behavior (be who I am.) When you change your identity, you address that behavior by it no longer being part of you. I teach people to be .a "non-smoker" by convincing them it is stupid (which take little work) and they are an intelligent person. That defines the behavior as stupid while they are intelligent. So the answer is, "I am a non-smoker who is doing a stupid thing." We eventually come to realize that we stop doing stupid things as a way of making our "intelligent person" complete. It may take six months for that identity to sink in and become real while you do a stupid thing, but when it sinks in, you come to realize that doing stupid things is just plain stupid and you are not.
that's how i stopped smoking weed but also had to kind of force myself to stop doing it for a while. because i think it may be unfair to say something is stupid when it makes you feel good. it's just that you body has limitations while your mind or soul wants to be infinite... so i think its about finding something else to fill your cup with so that you feel fulfilled and all that. but the identity thing you said is good. I'm in that process now of letting go of junk food because i know it is stupid and just makes me sick its just a psychological identification i have with it as something that makes me happy as a permission slip to let go and have fun... idk know one's probably reading this so i'm just rambling... ... ... I'll just add one thing that substances are a window into experiencing a certain state of being. and you want to learn how to get yourself to that point where you take inward control of your state of being and feel how you want to feel.... act on your excitement and try not to die... that's my bread and butter
Your theory is no different than those cheesy anti smoking ads. More people smoke because of it today. Stan is right, it will come down to discipline. Without it, we'd be extinct.
My dad was always drunk until I was about 13 and he hasn’t had a drink since. I hate to say this but he was way more annoying when all he’d talk about was how much he hates alcohol than when he would drink it. He wasn’t really fun anymore he just talked about AA meetings and hanging out with weird ass people he’d call his sponsors. Nowadays he still doesn’t drink but thankfully he also doesn’t constantly remind me of it whenever I talk to him.

You rack disciprine!!!
Straight-up facts man. That's why I never bought into the AA crap.
Do you have more disaprine now?
Such a good lesson
A good resson, indeed.
betoen beat me to it... like a year ago
Dumb lesson actually
@@Fedkarwhatever you say buddy… you must’ve felt on top of the world commenting that
I have learned more life lessons from South park than pretty much anything else.
Thats both sad and dumb.
That’s both sad and dumb.
Screw these other guys.. I’m with you bro. These cartoons have a lot of knowledge in them. And there’s a lot of truth in this 30 second clip
Amen brother

For some reason this scene hits me so hard. I think I'm gonna carry this lesson my whole life.
We all know that Randy is no alcoholic, but would certainly become one if it was not for our beloved hero: Stan Marsh
Stan Marsh? More like Stan DARSH.
@@destructionman1dammit you beat me to it 😂
Randy: How did I manage to raise such a smart kid?
Stan: I've had a great teacher.

This scene gives me chills and I don’t know why.
Because it’s enlightening
This is one of my favorite lessons that South Park has taught me, it’s something we can all learn and live by

as a functional alcoholic this hit home especially since im into martial arts
Are you Johnny Lawrence from Cobra Kai?
a discipline is a set of rules to live your life by... so either you need those rules or you don't... its all about taking CONSCIOUS control :)
*disciprine
addiction almost always masks another problem
Thank u for posting this I really apritiate it

Not a good lesson, under that idea, it should be done with hard drugs too. :(

No rule/lesson applies in every situation. They were specifically talking about drinking.
I disagree. All or nothing is the attitude you should have for everything in your life.
