MATT, I’m really digging this idea... My panels have been totally thrashed by the previous owner. I have NEVER thought about welding this directly to the body. Brilliant!
I'm here from Matts off road recovery. Watched some vids with you in it and figured I'd see what you had to offer. I'm building my hunting rig out of a 1962 Ford Ranchero body on a 1984 Ford Ranger 4X4. This video is something I want to do to mine. Thanks for showing YOUR method of doing it. 🇺🇸😎
MadMatt 4WD I'm naming it "The Rabbit Hole". It's been quite a journey. Lots of fabrication and modification. 6 month project is looking like a 2 year project. 🇺🇸😎
Was actually kicking the idea of making some rock sliders and changing the look of my 80 a little. Not to go over rocks but just a bit of added protection and to get ride of a few rust issues and having a little step. Seeing you do this gave me some new ideas of doing it and another reason to buy a welder 😂😂👍thanks great video.
I had a set like this on an XJ Cherokee and they worked great. This is honestly how most people should be building sliders. All the steel for the cantilevers supports to go to the frame weighs so much and you lose so much ground clearance too. Overlander guys with these huge 300 lb sliders that are so low they smack them on even easy obstacles always make my eyes roll. Sure if you are rock crawling or something extreme I get it. But this design would work and be better for 95% of people traveling off road.
Matt, nicely done. It is a pleasure to watch a video where some preparation is done. I hate it where the video shows the finding of stock and tools, on-the-fly designing, pondering a decision, and generally ill-preparedness.
Definitely makes a diff being for off-road use only. I think apart from a rollover, smashing in your sills is the main fear for a 4wder - is for me anyhow. Nice watching you work Matt. Cheers.
@@Malc664 Mig, Metal Inert Gas. So it's a wire feed that has an inert gas around the weld pool to keep the oxygen away from the weld. The gas does the same thing the Flux does on the stick welder.
Seeing as it like my First 80 series, and im only 16 would it be worth, building up as a 4wd primarily or not. Also Would installing a turbo, Increase power at all?
Here is how I made ROCK SLIDERS for under $200 Aussie dollars. Have you made any DIY sliders? If you have tell me about your experience, I am always up for learning what others do and how they do it!. If not give it a go and let me know about it!
Nice but you've got to grind / sand the paint off the existing metal before you weld. It just takes a minute with your angle grinder. Dirty welds aren't as strong as clean welds.
@@MadMatt4WD You're not alone. Other than one or two professional welding channels, most fabricators on UA-cam seem to skip the metal prep step. It drives me crazy. Sure there are welds that no one will see, and/or don't matter structurally, but when you're welding something that matters, prep matters. A quick pass with a wire brush or a flap disc sander on your angle grinder is usually all that is needed. Love your videos... keep up the good work.
There's no way in hell would I ever cut my Rocker panels out just to put rock sliders on . I can make them the right way and still keep my nice rocker panels. And now I see where Matt from Matt's off Road recovery got it from. I a 30 year paint and body man so I will do it the proper way. You don't need to do it that way to get it to work right and mine will still look really nice
@@MadMatt4WD yeah I guess we will. But the one I'm working on is a off road 1991 Dodge Ramcharger and the rockers a perfect so that's why I won't do it to mine. Even if they weren't in perfect shape I just don't see the need in doing it when you can just build them under the rocker that way if you got rid of it and that person wanted to restore it or if later you wanted to restore it you would have to put more work in to it
No you're right but 309 and of us have good tastes. LOL Maybe you should check out the barwork on the Bundera to see what I do when I build for tastes. It's in lots of the videos.
Just watched the Fab Rats take inspiration from your project👌
Yeah how cool was that ay. I liked the way they did the front fenders.

There seems to be no end to your talent and abilities. Great job!
Thanks mate.
you could use a small self taping screw and a chalk line too to make your line to cut
I could but wheres the fun in that? :)
Mad Matt, another great video. I hope you continue the content on the race truck!!!
good luck at the race mate looks like a blast
Thanks mate

When can we get a run down on the race truck.
Keep up the good work 👍

Wish I could weld! I also like to keep my 80 as light as possible.
Its not that hard but it takes practice. Buy a cheap mig and start learning. Watch some youtube videos as well

Nice content!

Hey Matt, how is this holding up 3 years later?
They did really well. The cab got binned this year after I rolled it so they’ve gone now.
Where can I buy an eyeometer?
Ha ha ha. You already have them installed from factory they just need to be calibrated. 😁😁
Just spent $946 for bolt on RCI sliders lol. Very easy to install, but still a pain in the ass in the middle of the summer!
Nice work. And these are certainly not RCi quality.
You should raptor line the 80 and do a video on it as I’m curious on how to do it I want to do it to my Gq
I should not do such a horrible thing to my 80. No one cares with GQs but 80s must look awesome at all times.
Hey how good does the 3f petrol engine run on an 80 Series?
For 4wd and camping
I personally wouldn’t have one when the 1fz-fe is available so cheap. They’re toyota strong and reliable but under powered and thirsty.

Gotta build some for mine , cant get decent store bought ones for reg cab tacomas...
Do it. 😁
Great video keep up the good work😎
Thanks mate
A grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain't.
As we say you’re not a welder you’re a grinder
Since you don’t have someone to help with straight edge try using a hot glue gun to hold the straight edge
😂😂😂
few things in life are worse than a triggered boilermaker.....lol..trigger on nice job btw

You just cut out the rocker panel that the rock slider is supposed to protect
Well yeah I converted the sill into a slider. Some years on now and it’s working very very well.
Im confused is it a rock crawler or a race car
It’s a race car that races across all sorts of country. So we will winch rock crawl and then go flat out across a paddock.
