- Hi!
Today we are making an easy and SIMPLE diy raised garden bed!!!!
If you are looking for some budget friendly ideas for the garden, This video is for you!!!!
So all together this bed cost under $5!
Fence- $3
Plastic -$1
Pins - .12 ¢
Landscape Fabric - .84¢
Total Price we paid $4.96
I'm happy to break it down for you.
COST BREAKDOWN
Fence (4ft tall)- $1 per foot
I used 3 feet of fencing which made the fence 3 by 4.
I cut that in half, which gave me two pieces of 3 by 2 ft pieces.
I put those two 3ft pieces together and created a 6 ft piece (circle) that was 2 ft high.
This frame cost $3
Landscaping pins - $1 (that I actually bought at the end of last season for 25 cents a pack)
I used maybe half a pack so thats 12.5 cents
I did not buy liner I used plastic we already had but a box of black trash bags from the dollar store would be plenty enough.
Let's go ahead and count that dollar.
That would put us at $4.12 cents
The landscape fabric cost $12 for a 4x100 ft roll.
If we divide that 100 feet by 12 we understand that it's about .12 cents per foot.
I used 7 ft which equals 84 cents
Fence- $3
Plastic -$1
Pins - .12 ¢
Landscape Fabric - .84¢
Total Price we paid $4.96
ASSEMBLY:
Here's what I did for a 6ft round bed-
3 feet of 4 ft fencing - cut in half, giving you 2 pieces of 3 ft fencing that is 2 ft high.
attached both pieces together to creat a circle.
zip tied them together
secured the bottom to the ground with landscaping pins.
lined the inside with plastic. Trash bags, shower curtains or even plastic table cloths work great.
Cover the outside with landscape fabric!
and that's it!!!!

For your watermelon add some sand to your soil. That has been our key to raising good melons.
Thats so good to know!!!! Thank you!
My husband's hometown was known for melon production many years ago. The soil is very sandy in the whole area.
I definitely need to get some sand! Thanks for chiming in!
Hi is it river sand?
Thanks for the tip. I started melons inside, and am going to.plant over the weekend. I'm planting along our fence to hang the fruit in plastic grocery bags on the fence. I saw it in a video here on yt.
"Little to no money" is my type of jam when it comes to gardening!! 😂 🤩
YASSSSS
@@ourfreedomsong yah i grew potatoes on a cardboard box last year.
I have been using a child's swimming pool with holes in the bottom for the last 10 years. Works like a charm
Same! My grandaughter grew pumpkins out of her last year!!
*granddaughter
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 That's amazing!
My neighbour made a similar bed, which he planted with strawberries. To ensure that he got to eat some of them, he used an old umbrella, from which he had removed all but the outside 2" of fabric, as a form to support netting over them. A piece of piping buried in the middle of the bed, with the umbrella handle dropped in to it, netting stretched over & pegged to the bed frame with clothes pegs for easy access. The bees could get in, but the birds were barred.
That's so cool and clever. Last year my first time to plant strawberries birds 🐦 got a lot of them. 🍓
Very very cool!!!!!
It so good to garden❤
I'd love to see how it has weathered!
There are some natural things that squirrels and EVEN Birds hate. I have read n I have an old newspaper article about what plants to PLANT NEXT' TO EACHOTHER TO HELP KEEP slugs n stuff away from your perhaps greater food/ vegetable. Y'all might have to ask GIIGLE about such n SELF- rushing corn meal gets rid of some things. My great Aunt used to put in her FANTASTIC VEGGIES!!? SHE WAS LIKE A QUEEN GARDENER !!! A GIFT TO US!!!
Girl, your joy is infectious ❤
🥰🥰🥰🥰🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 .... This blessed my heart
I saw this while I was drinking on my couch.... being lazy.... I realized that I had a bunch of wire in the back of my house.... I got my lazy ass up and went out and plotted out where I am going to place mine!!!! Thank you so much for the idea!
Yassss!!!!! So happy to inspire you to GET UP 😆 and go outside and see what you have to make a space that you will be in love with ❤️
Oh, and use CARDBOARD boxes instead of expensive plastic, to suppress weeds- then lay the blackest weed barrier, put some wood chips on top- You can find boxes anywhere pretty much- no stickers, no ink or not a lot of it- It works and water can go thru it- and the benefit is for the worms and the earth :) xox
Thank you ❤️ 🌱
Great job it’s looking amazing all your hard work is really paying off so you can sit back with a cold drink, chill out & admire your creation 👍🌱🌷🌱🇨🇦
Most times when people say "I build this for super cheap" they mean "I had all these super specific and really awesome things lying around that I could use". What good is that to me? Some fencing, now THAT is helpful.
Your enthusiasm is so inspiring, new subscriber here.
Hi!!! WELCOME! Im so glad you are here and most of all that this was helpful! ❤️
Am I the only one who was expecting her to surround the outside with vertical bamboo stalks? Looks awesome 👌👏
oOoOO!!! I like where your brain was going with this! That would be gorgeous! 😍
@@ourfreedomsong Cool idea or maybe some of that bamboo screening stuff that comes on a roll. I love what you did here.
YESSSSS! That would be gorgeous as well!
@@justjoanish Thank you ❤️
Great idea!
Great ideas!!! If you really want a good way to suppress grass/weeds and save some money…use cardboard!! Lay it out even over grass and put whatever dirt o mulching you want, cut holes in the cardboard for where you want plantings to go. Before you plant water the cardboard good…LOL Yeah water your cardboard and then start whatever you want. A garden bed, a pathway, anywhere you don’t want grass or weeds. It allows moisture to to flow through, it will keep the soil warm on those unexpected chilly nights, it will break down into the soil naturally providing nutrients to your friendly helpers, WORMS!!! I have had to replace my cardboard and redo s bed maybe every 3-4 years, but it depends on your weather and sun. I live in Upstate NY. I use cardboard everywhere 😂
Thank you so much for chiming in! This is how we began last year! I really appreciate cardboard!
Awesome use for repurposing the file cabinets..love that!!..also enjoyed seeing everyone pitch in..so much better than stuck indoors on their phones 😊
Yes!! I love that they can be outside with me! I just love that we get to have these moments together ❤️!
Yaaaas.! Frugal......Cheap.....Free. They all seem to grow so much better. Not to mention how it feels when you chomp down on it. Lol!!
Hahahaha yes!!
Your enthusiasm is contagious! 🥰
Where there is a problem, let there be a creative solution! You DID IT!
If you get tired of the black landscape fabric look, cover with burlap or collect branches and attach as palisade fence. You could also cut holes into the fabric and plant flowers or strawberries hanging on the outside. I can honestly say you are today's garden muse!
🥰🥰🥰😍 I love all of your suggestions! Because at some point I could definitely want to change it up! I love all of those ideas! Planting strawberry is genius! How cool would that be! I will keep that in my pocket for next year! Thank you thank you!
@@ourfreedomsong
Thank YOU and you are most welcome 💞💞 Wished you were my neighbor; we would have a lot of fun together!
P.S.: If you want "free" strawberry plants, scrape the seeds off your strawberries, put a sheet of toilet paper into a clear container with lid, soak the toilet paper, put seeds on, and put the container in a warm, sunny place making sure toilet paper is not drying out. Once the seeds are germinating and have a couple of leaves on, pot them up using tweezers. I've done this several times with store bought strawberries that I thought were absolutely delicious, so I would get different varieties than the ones found in my garden section.
I AGREE !!! She about had me ready to go start on one at 0230 !!!
i am barely a minute in and i barely care about the rest of the content because you have MADE MY DAY!!! your smile and excitement is contagious, and i LOVE it! ok....now, because i love frugal too, i am on to the rest of the video!
🥹🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 and now you've made mine ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Brenda Gantt said she has big pots of still water with cheap goldfish to get rid of mosquitos. The bugs are attracted to the water and lay eggs which the goldfish promptly eat. She sits on her open porch ( close by and never gets bitten.
Wow! What a great idea!!!!
Just a tip from a DYI gardener. There is a fabric you can purchase called Vevor driveway fabric. It allows for drainage but does not allow for weed growth. I am using this fabric to put in my driveway and garden paths and works like a charm without having to deal with weeds or standing water. I learned about it from a contractor who uses this stuff along for putting in weed free paths and driveways. It is also used commercially for putting in parking areas when a company does not want to deal with grading an area for water drainage. I have spoken with several other gardeners and they have told me this stuff is more durable than standard weed blocking fabric.
Thanks so much for sharing! I've never heard of it! It sounds wonderful!!!
I love all your thrifty ideas but one of my favorite parts about this video was your daughter out there rocking it in the garden in a fancy little skirt and tall rubber boots! It made my day & I want to garden like that EVERYDAY!🥰
Keep the ideas & good vibes coming!
Awwwww 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Since you are building raised garden beds, then you can turn them into cold frames by making a roof with old windows or plexiglass as it will protect garden plants from snow and frost if you do it right. With a removable roof then you can practice crop rotation and have cold weather crops in winter.
Thank you so much for sharing ❤️
I had to watch this video cuz the hype as of ur face n vibes in the first part of the video. I ain’t think no one else got hype bout gardening n saving money.😁😁😁go head get that garden onnn
Hahahahahaah! YASSSSS!!!! Thank you ❤️
Are all them kids your kids? Let me tell you, I just have to smile if they are ❤. The memories are flooding back to me from my childhood and there was five of us kids, an instant workforce for my dad and mom, as they made us work in the yard and garden, etc., etc.. we all complained along the way, but I tell you what… It gave us a love for gardening and the outdoors ❤
YASSS! They are all my babies! 😍
And I absolutely love that! I truly believe that this experience is cultivating something within their hearts that they are unaware of right now. Thank you for sharing this story with all of us ❤️
@@ourfreedomsong you are doing EXACTLY that, molding them! Many are content to let the video games and tv raise their kids, without making them get outside! I am thankful my parents taught me to touch the earth, grow things, etc etc!!!
I get dead logs from the forest. 6 ten foot and 6 four foot. Two stakes side by side to hold the logs on each end, and a pair in the middle of the short side to hold the 4 footers. Line with cardboard, fill and plant. Free raised beds 🎉
Niiice! Thank you for the idea!
Taquisha strikes again!!!!!!! Your smile at the beginning of your video is contagious, I couldn’t wait to see what you had to share. Awesome/amazing raised bed (love it). Wow, I didn’t see it coming. You knocked it out the box. You are so creative. I love watching your videos. I think that removing the plastic was an excellent idea to rid your porch area of those pesky mosquitoes. Looking forward to your next video.😊😊😊😊
Agree!!!
Hi!!!! You are the sweetest!!! I'm so happy you enjoyed this!!!! Makes my heart so happy!!! 💝
Just watched another video that said dragonflies eat mosquitoes. Maybe if you cultivate a good habitat for dragonflies, you'll have fewer mosquitoes. Your garden looks terrific, by the way!
I need to look into what dragonflies love! They are so cool! I'd love to see them flying around!
Why not use cardboard instead of landscape fabric. The thing about the landscape fabric is it will eventually cause the ground to become compacted and nutrient deficient. If you use cardboard it will breakdown over time and yes a weed or two will eventually pop through but it will still be easier to maintain then nothing at all. It will also feed the worms underneath and biodegrade naturally. You can always lay another layer directly on top of everything again a couple seasons down the road and top it with mulch again and it will be like lasagna gardening. I live in zone 7b Tennessee and deal with the most invasive grasses. This is how i combat them. It's not and end all solution but it helps a lot.
Cardboard is a really great option for all the reasons you stated! We did use this method on different areas on our property, just not in this spot. Not having plastic in this area is already proving to be beneficial as I can already tell that there aren't as many mosquitoes. Thank you for chiming in!
@@ourfreedomsong I just happened on this vlog. For free cardboard find yourself some girl scouts. Yes Girl Scouts during cookie season. Ask them if you could have some of the empty cookie cases. They will, I'm certain gladly let you have them. As a scout leader of many years, I can tell you, I will burn what I can't give away in the fire pit. Our rural area doesn't have recycling and we have to get rid of those cardboard cases.
That's such a good resource idea! Thanks for sharing!
When having a outside party take 2 lemons 🍋 and cut in half each one, poke into the top of the lemon juice whole cloves and set around for decoration! This will get rid of mosquitoes and other insects! Enjoy your summer ❣
Never heard of this!!! Thank you for sharing ❤️
Miss L, I am completely swept away by your great ideas, enthusiasm, your precious loving heart, and your kindness to share with the rest of us. Thanks so much! I am a fan forever! Stay blessed!

I used a child swimming pool did holes in the bottom and it has been in use for over 3 years
Very cool!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I have also used a child's swimming pool. It lasted two years then it fell apart.

Kiss your brain. This is an excellent and economic way to do raised bed. I definitely will be doing this. Thanks for sharing!! Peace and love 😍
Hi!!!!!! Im so happy this helps you out!!! Our bed is holding up great!!!
I use this method too. It works well.
Where possible, I dig out 12" of dirt from the bottom & set aside on a tarp. I fill the dug out hole with semi rotten wood, old limbs & fat sticks to create a modified hugel bed bottom to retain moisture. I go higher with the wood to take up more space if possible. Then lay in leaves, pine needles & smaller sticks. I mix well rotted compost with the set aside dirt for the top. I find I get less settling that way & it cuts down on buying bagged products. Since raised beds tend to dry out quicker, it helps to have the hugel bottom & native soil in the bed. I've stopped using landscape fabric for lining & use a double cardboard liner.
I grow peas or beans around the exterior for camouflage.
Niiice!
Last spring we visited a nursery and they had mosquito plants, so I bought two, they grew like a small to medium bush size and I did not see one mosquito the entire summer!! The mosquito plant is a winner!!!
Whaaaa !! I've never heard of a mosquito plant! I would plant them everywhere hahha
Sweetheart, your excitement is contagious! Makes me want to hurry up and get outside! Thank you for sharing.
Ahhhh! Yassss!!! That makes me so happy to read! ❤️

Hi!!!! Thank you so much! And that is an EXCITING thought! Rosemary is so wonderful!!!!
Your children are Rockstar helpers! You are blessed! 😊😊😊

What a crazy good idea for a raised bed! And yes, anything to keep mosquitoes away. I actually have some fencing in the shed which will get put to good use, and I've got a filing cabinet outside not being useful at all, so it's going to be a planter very soon!
YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🤩

I just saw that smile and clicked the video ....great work
Thank you so much! So sweet 💞
nasturtiums would be good to plant around the edge of the round planter because the could hang over the sides - and they are edible.
Ooooo that's such a great idea! I will stick that in my pocket! Thank you for chiming in!!! ❤️
These are some great ideas, and I love your enthusiasm! I am a single mom, struggling to make ends meet, but I have a huge yard. I found you by looking for inexpensive raised beds. You did NOT disappoint!! Thank you for sharing your experience!

You are so beautiful I love your smile and the idea that makes a rease bed for nothing. That was a good idea. Good luck to you looking forward to seeing more
🥰🥰🥰🥰 Thank you so much for those sweet words ❤️!!!!
How many bags of soil did it take to fill that 20 inches high 6 foot diameter circle?? That is the main cost for container gardening for me!!
About $30-35
@kaythegardener you don’t use hardly any soil-fill up the bottom with yard waste
I fill the bottom of my raised beds with sticks & straw, dirt at the end.
Great set up! Since you used landscape fabric if you chose you could actually cut a small slit in it and plant seedlings into the sides. You garden bed could be a garden tower for small plants such as herbs and lettuces. Which would actually make a beautiful living wall. Also consider mulching the top of the bed to keep moisture in and weeds down. Pinestraw would work or other plants that you chop and drop on top from your garden. Another addition would be an inbed worm tower. All you have to do is get a good sized food grade platic bin with a lid such as a large coffee container or mayo jar drill holes and add some kitchen scrapes and dead leaves and bury it in the bed. The worms will come.
Very very cool!!!! Thank you so much for sharing ❤️
That was a great idea 💡. I made a video the other day and I used old tires as raised beds that I got for free from auto shops. I have a few rolls of the same wire you used and I'm using it for the cukes and squash and beans. Great video 😊 have a great day and happy gardening 🌿🌱😊🤗
Very creative! I love it!!! So happy this is helpful!

🥰🥰🥰🥰 You are so kind ❤️ Thank you for taking the time to speak so lovingly! ❤️
The fencing material has doubled in price since last year, i was looking into it last weekend. Because lately, I've been ordering cheap raised beds . And omg, it's about 180. 00 for the fencing material 😢. Recently my washing machine broke, and i saved the drum to plant something in it. Plus you can use old tires too. Just trying to use things that are around.
I used a washing machine inner drum for a fire pit. The outer tub, still on it's base, will be a planter. Also a dryer drum is about the size of her round bed but I haven't set it up yet.
Very cool!!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I love that you are looking around to see what you can use 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Marigolds are amazing. Plus you can save the seed at the end of the season. I love how you can come out your front door abd pull herbs...looks really good!!
Hey!!!! Thank you! I love the convenience as well!!! I'm SO excited about the marigolds ... I didn't realize they were so extremely beneficial.... But now that I know! 😆

Ahhh! Im so happy for you! Im happy you are inspired! ❤️
To save yourself the cost of plastic and the hassle of standing water or inadequate drainage … try using cardboard in all the places you would’ve used plastic! Works great, allows flow, decomposes nicely and is free. Your planters are all so clever! Love them! In fact, I’ve been trying to find the cheapest easiest way to make my compost areas (with cardboard instead of plastic) and this is perfect. Thanks! Just what I was looking for.
Im so happy to inspire you!!! Im definitely loving the cardboard better! We are in the process of building our backyard orchard and was able to get an abundance of boxes from dollar general! Thank you for chiming in! ❤️ 🌱

Looks great! I love your energy and vibe! So I subscribed! Take care!😀
WELCOME! I'm so happy you are here ❤️
I’m gunna do that! Great idea - thanks! I’ll be using burlap instead of the landscape fabric. Burlap comes in huge rolls cheap and natural / non toxic - plus! I already have it
Love the idea of using burlap! Gives me options for the future if/when I need to recover! Thank you ❤️
I love burlap but the stuff at the box stores is more like a cat's cradle than cloth these days- the stuff online looks better, but it's going to cost; the quality has gone drastically down.
YESSSS Love it, Gurl Smart Idea! You can plant so much in that. I am glad you removed the plastic and just put fabric down. TFS
That plastic was giving those mosquitoes and quiet upper hand! It didn't even dawn on me!
And
Thank you!!!!! ❤️
Gotta say you have a very impressive smile. With your raised bed you might want to find some old stakes and place against the wall so it doesn't sag with the weight later .Not sure if you can get a citronella plant in US but over here in Australia we get so many mozzies in the summer. Some are so big I swear you could put a saddle on them. I have a couple of citronella plants near the front and back door . If you shake them around a bit every time you pass them the smell will deter the dreaded mozzies. Marigolds deter the snails and slugs more. Happy gardening.
Thank you 🥰🥰🥰🥰
And WHOOOO that's incredibly big! I don't think i would survive! They would come straight for me and drink every bit of my blood hahaha
I use cheap rectangular shaped birdhouses, block off the entrance hole, glue a piece of skinny balsa wood tube shape up inside the house, for a perch, cut out the bottom and hang my DIY Bat house up at least 15 feet from the ground on a sunny side of the house. These little sweeties eat their weight of nasty biting bugs in one evening. I don’t have a mosquito problem anymore. I also put pots of lemon balm around sitting spaces because their strong scent does not appeal to biting bugs.
Hollywood gave bats a bad name, they are shy, only really want to sleep during the day and wake up at dusk to begin clearing your yard of nasty bugs,
I absolutely adore your attitude. Someone that your happiness just shines through and makes others smile.
🥰🥰🥰🥰 Thank you so much for those sweet words
Great idea! Looks great! 💜

Good ideas, I like finding cheaper options too.I used an old boxed spring mattress for a garden bed just turned it upside down and filled it with topsoil it worked well.
😍😍😍 How cool is that?!?!
File Cabinet Planters now that I'd love to see...and i did..Thank you for the idea for my soon to be empty file cabinet..Beautiful
Yes!!!! You are so welcome!
Its not the container that is the cost of gold ...ITS THE DIRT 😂
😂😂😂 Truth... They killin us on these soil prices!
Use Styrofoam in bottom. Free! Less soil needed. Pots are lighter to move if you use them.
I am SO glad to see your children helping out! We have our kiddos help as well and they learn so much more by getting involved. Such a great impact!
Love your woven wire raised bed idea!!
Thank you!! And YES! Its such a wonderful for experience for them! We are all learning so much together! ❤️
First time viewer. Loved your channel and your warm personality.
The best idea I have is to put a kiddie pool or some similar water feature. Put a few goldfish in. They will multiply. Mosquitos lay their eggs on the water, the goldfish eat the mosquitos and their eggs, and you have fish poop water for the garden!
Thank you for sharing!!!
@@ourfreedomsong thank you for reading it!
Plus , by removing the plastic it will allow earthworms to enter and work. 😉 so beautiful to see the children involved ❤

Thank you!!!! I do believe that creativity is birth from a need or want!
The best way to deter mosquitos is to make sure things like your guttering is clear, no places where they can breed (they only need like a teaspoon of water to breed). No old empty pots that can hold water.
So basically regularly scout around your property and keep it clean and clear of debris.
It’s so hard to keep them away in Arizona, they swarm around anything damp.
😶🌫️😣😣😣
Thank you! I had no idea they needed such LITTLE water! That's wild!
Girl it means they are over pricing this world and we have the sense to get the same thing great quality for less. High five to you 🙏🏾 thank you because #frugal is the way

Bird houses, bat houses and birdfeeders birdbath keep the birds around all summer with suet, black oil sunflower seeds believe it or not they will stick around with this food because they will be eating bugs by the thousands it works. I’ve done this every year and I’ve noticed a big difference with a black flies. Mosquitoes horseflies have dropped immensely good luck beautiful work hard work you’re doing a wonderful job.🥰
Thank you so much!!! Black oil sunflower seeds, OKAY! We are planning to make some birdhouses soon from pallets, Im happy to know what type of feed to get now!

What a Great Idea!! Thank you so much!
I was just looking at raised garden beds at the big box stores, way too much money! This is brilliant!
I'm so happy this is helpful ❤️❤️❤️
Very cool! But I don’t understand where all your energy comes from! (Although I suspect it’s your youth.) You have such passion and vision-and your garden reaps the benefit. You’re extremely enjoyable to watch! I figure I can almost garden vicariously through you! Thanks for a fun video.
Haha!! Thank you!!🥰🥰🥰
Enjoyed you and your children's effort at planting a garden. If that is a Rosemary bush that you have in the center - it will grow enormous and overtake the whole circumference of the garden and you will either have to remove it or let it take over the whole area and you only need one plant. Just a tip to be aware of - thanks for sharing.
The one in my backyard has tripled in size and needs to be thinned out! They really do get huge.
Thank you!
So cool!
I was thinking the same thing.
You are beautiful in your excitement for what you've accomplished. That's why I just subscribed before I even finished watching your video. Mind you I'm a 60 year old Grammy so I'm saying that in a very honest way. I can't wait to watch more.😊
Awwww. This made my heart so happy ❤️.... Its such a privilege to have you in the garden with me ❤️ Thank you for being here
