@@TheAsyouwysh the video would have to be a mini series because I have read through the curse of Strahd book before and it can never be done the same way twice, unless you run it hundreds of times. There are great pages for info on Reddit.
NOTE FOR ANY DM’s playing with new players: This adventure is incredible for new players. However, there’s one thing that you might want to look out for. When I ran the adventure, each player character found a different quest-giver, and the entire party split. I would recommend finding a way to keep the party together- like the quest-givers saying that their missions are for only for a full team of adventurers. Other than that, my best advice for the module is to make it your own and don’t be afraid to modify it! We completed this adventure last week- it’s really fun and I recommend it to everyone!
Good advice, mate! I loved running this, as well. I found some success by, when the players were pulled in two directions, having some townsfolk step up to take on one quest while the heroes took the other. ... the townsfolk then may or may not have ended up as hostages on the next adventure, but at least it keeps the pacing, right?
I'm going to play this module with my players in w few weeks. I just received it. I've been playing D&D for 40 years. I had played for over 10 years in the Forgotten Realms, which is why I have not played in it since like the late 90s. This is going to be a return to that lore, of which most has been lost to the ages (50 years of ages:). Thanks for the refresher.
Experienced DMs don't necessarily know the Forgotten Realms lore. Your videos have been a great service to me in running Storm King's Thunder and I've been DMing and playing since the original Red Box. Keep up the great work! It's appreciated.
Just ran the first section of the campaign with my three kids this evening. Was expecting to get through it in 1 hour- 1.5 hours, 3 and a half hours later... Best/worst, my 12 year older daughter, if I killed one of the members of our party and no one caught me, would I be able to collect their payment if I told the people in town they really wanted me to have it (she is playing a Chaotic Neutral Rogue despite me trying to discourage her).
Don't worry, I started DMing it for my wife and friends last October and we're still going. They've almost finished in Phandalin itself after all this time, but considering I saw a D&D dev team game that spent just as much time stuck in the first cave I learned to relax about the pacing xD
Thanks for talking about the factions, I'm about 5 sessions into this campaign and I've been thinking about how to get my players to choose them :) The townsfolk NPCs in Phandalin are all reaaaally keen on getting players into these factions and without context players will never know which ones to choose.
Thanks! This is the series I needed to years ago when I Dm'd LMoP for the first time and could not find it. Please do Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamant next!
Thank you so much Jorphdan! Over the last three weeks I have been listening to your videos and it has gotten me back into D&D! I have not played since second edition, but I decided to grab the starters kit "Lost Mine of Phandelver" and my daughters have become as fascinated with it as I was when I first played! I am fudging some things I know but I am slowly getting back into the role of dungeon master! I have been looking for so long to find something we could all do as a family on weekends and this is turning out to be the very thing we needed! Thank you for all of your passionate work in bringing us these great videos every week, I have listened to all of them, Gods bless! M
Took my first steps into the hobby when I ran this for my friends 15 months ago. It’s a really great adventure, but I wish this video was available when I started!
Wow man, your timing is impeccable. I have a new group and decided on running this for them. I was searching for a video like this , but ultimately just, literally 2 minutes before seeing this vid in my UA-cam recommendations, finished reading the adventure. Great Post, like most of your videos. I watch em all. Keep up the good work.
Great video, especially for new DMs, but some ideas for experienced DMs also. I ran LMoP as the intro to Storm King's Thunder instead of using the SKT intro chapter. SPOILERS FOR SKT FOLLOW: I had it that the Forge of Spells was actually one of the missing pieces of the Vonindod being sought by the fire giants. Nezznar the Black Spider was hired by a collector (actually leader of a new thieves guild in Neverwinter) to retrieve the forge so the guild could make magical weapons to sell to Lord Neverember. The PCs decided to work with Nezznar for part of the payment, and helped him retrieve the forge and take it to the surface. Nezznar wanted them to take it to Triboar to meet his contact for the handoff, but the PVs wanted to go to Thundertree instead, so Nezznar hired someone else to take it. Eventually when the PCs made it to Triboar, they discovered the fire giants had already attacked the town and stolen the Forge of Spells (instead of the vonindod piece under the campground as written). The PCs now have to go to Ironslag to get back the Forge of Spells so everyone can get paid, and stop the firegiants from rebuilding the vonindod in the process.
I've been having a lot of fun DMing this particular adventure. Even though it's meant to be short, I've somehow turned it into a 30+ session adventure with ties to many of the other published adventures via adventure hooks in-game. My players especially seemed to love the Venomfang fight and have even befriended Droop the goblin from the first dungeon, who is tagging along for the ride as a zany Expert class sidekick (from Unearthed Arcana). Thanks for the video!
This helped clear up alot of the campaign for me! I'm still new to DND, but I wish this was out before I started playing Lost Mines of Phandelver. Very well done, and I hope you do more campaign videos like this!
I was briefly a player in a...less-than-successful campaign attempt on Roll20 that used this module. Having read through it recently with the intent to run it myself (to ease my way back into 5E and teach some new players the game), I realize now why that campaign failed: the DM skipped nearly all of the NPC interactions that made Phandalin feel alive, and none of us cared about the Redbrands as a result. I'll be sure to lightly nudge players toward tying their characters in with at least one faction or character involved in the adventure. Oh, and this is my first time watching one of your videos, but I intend to go through a great deal of them now to help learn this setting. Thanks for providing such a wealth of useful content!
This video is great. The Lost Mine of Phandelver is really everything you need to start playing in the Forgotten Realms world. At the same time, (and what I'm going to say is only about me) I feel a bit "stuck" in the over-exploited universe of FR, especially on the Sword Coast areas. I had a lot of hope in the "Nentir Vale" campaigns setting, because it was a fresh new start and give DM more liberty, but unfortunately this universe did not manage to compete with the charms of the FR setting.
I love this! A friend in my group wants to learn how to DM and he literally just texted us about possibly running the starter set so this will be great to help him out!
I loved this one, I agree a little bit more could've been said but, I loved it still. The background on the area was great and would've been awesome to add to my game. But. We just finished LMoP. Headed into Storm King's Thunder now, and having the same feeling towards all the background area there! KEEP THIS SERIES GOING!
Mate you’re going to love SKT- we played it through last year and it was probably responsible for one of the best years of my life. It’s a really unique adventure in that you almost feel like a giant-hunting team of superheroes. If you’re DMing I’d recommend that you make the party seem more and more famous as the adventure goes on. It’s seriously good stuff 👍🙂
I have some new players beginning on D&D, maybe i'll use this campaign, after all as Geralt of Rivia said "Even skilled masters need to own the fundamentals". Great video, as always
Great Idea! Every 5e module I’ve ran could’ve used one of these. Typically all I find are play sessions or surface-level reviews, which are usually spoiler free.
Yeah I wanted to help DMs with the backstory if they did want to run their adventure in the Forgotten Realms. I'm excited to cover more adventures in the future :D
great video - looking forward to more of these! I could not see myself running this with pregen characters, but giving them the connections in their backstory was a good idea.
Thank you for the detailed lore that surround the adventure of MoP. I am running this now and added the facts you shared from this video, it adds much more volume to the story when you add in things like an Elemental was the reason for the volcano erupting. Also, I just found your merch page; Jorphdan’s Emporium, I’m getting that University Tee!
Wow, what a great idea for a video series and really natural progression of your channel. I know you have plenty to cover, but just throwing in my 2 cents that I'd like to see one for Storm King's Thunder. Cheers!
LMoP was my first 5e Adventure. I had played D&D about ten years before and was kind of unsure about potentially slowing down the others because I was so rusty - as it turned out, everyone else in the party was fairly new to D&D. I did not play one of the pre-made chars, but DM and me found some nice tie-ins for my bard and as it turned out, 5e was not so scary after all :) So yeah, this adventure is also nice if you want to come back to D&D, it was great fun. It was really interesting to catch back up with the lore, like "Whaaat?! All that has happened while I was away?" I imagine that's what people in the Realms feel like after they've been magically imprisoned for a while :)
Currently running the campaign... We're near the 15th session and they've just arrived on Thundertree. 4-5 hour sessions. But I think we spend a lot of time roleplaying... But that is the objective isn't it? Thanks for the videos!!
This is actually the booklet I used when I started Dm'ing many years ago. I've run through it three times with groups so far. I have yet to have anybody use one of the pre-genned characters though. As a fledgling DM I always wanted to create my own setting anyway, so the fact that not much info was given on the forgotten realms was kind of alright for me in the long run, however I can't definitely say for sure if you're not planning on creating a whole setting of your own, this is so helpful. My first time running this campaign with my friends was so haphazard. Afterwards however I basically reworked the whole booklet into my own setting. Spoilers: Just as an FYI for new DM's, one thing I do have to say about a specific point in the book is the fight with the green dragon. You absolutely have to hold back on your players, that dragon can very easily kill your players in just a few turns. The book says to have the dragon retreat when it gets to half (possibly a third) of it's health, but I feel that's still just way too much time for the dragon to cause a TPK. (I actually substituted the whole dragon encounter into a plot point encounter that tied in the dormant volcano. (meaning I also had to change the dragon worshippers.) Just go easy on your players for that fight, if they're new players, they won't even realize that you're holding back cause the dragon is still VERY powerful.
Amazing & Essential #TheLoreYouKnow brief and concise guide on how to run #LostMineofPhandelver, Jorphdan!! It resonates with many aspiring but intimidated DMs who have the Starter Set to eventually run but are at a loss as to how to actually begin and convey the lore information(!!) to new players without being awkwardly "meta" in the sense of what players should or shouldn't know to enjoy the game with fresh eyes yet have an engaging world investment in the lore! It's very much left to the DMs to problem solve this and your guide does so wonderfully! The echo wave, the dwarven statue, Hotenow, Phandalin's history itself! As with your other video on the goblins with the tank, it allows future DMs to visualize running or even build encounters and to get out of their heads and into the game and not be too into the details or attempt to juggle things in their mind too much of how to and where and when and so forth and " everything must be perfect" and never start! Looking forward to More #The LoreYouKnow Kudos!! Also, my UA-cam browser actually DOES have the window to click on Faction Guides! Ha! 😀🎯🏆🎬📚
Big fan of this, I have most of the campaign books but never played them. I mostly just ran my homebrew campaign stuff. Unfortunately due to irl stuff I have little time to make all my homebrew content so I’m tempted to run a campaign from a book I just need to know a good one
Hey, Lore Dude, simply loved the format. Look, for the next episode, could you include a spoiler moment in the end where u talk about cool items, encounters and scenes of the adv...like dm only knowledge? Itd be great.
Maybe a second video? Hmmm... I don't want to spoil it for would be players. I'll have to think about this. Maybe I can make an unlisted video with a link for those that are interested in more.
maybe u just insert a SPOIL ALERT screen near the end and warn players to hit the road... I dont know... as a dm... these details...highlights of the adventure are the things that make me decide to run it or pass.
@@Jorphdan hey I liked that idea as well! DM only videos with spoilers. If players want to have their adventures spoiled, they could also have seen it in the adventure book... so you shouldn't worry about that!
I think i am going to like this series. While i am not a new DM, it does help having a lore summary. PS - I also really love the bit after the end-card...
Great video I think if theres a way to convert the prewritten characters into npcs you can still run all the content and just have those npcs be questgivers. Just a thought
We just finished playing this, like an hour ago hahahah It was totally fun, 2 tieflings (a fighter and a wizard) a dragonborn barbarian, a human ranger and a dwarf cleric of St. Cuthbert. At the end, we killed the Black Spider and my dwarf cleric used the staff of spiders to gain control of the bugbears there so we could rebuild the ruins in the name of St. Cuthbert
I DMed MoP for my wife and a friend as a birthday present. And since there where only two player we had to improvise. Each player had one main character and an additional one or two, which could change in the course of the game. Suddenly NPCs became PCs (the two children held captive (the boy becoming a ranger (always striding the woods), the girl becoming a sorceress (awakened by the traumatic events)), and even the goblin bullied by the hobgoblins was a rogue with "taker-qualities"). I didn't use the pregenerated characters or factions from start (but the main characters mentors sending them were members). They should be in touch with their characters, so create them themselves, but it would have been a good option for the secondary ones. The factions I used as feedback for their behaviour. Only if the PC acted in accordance of a faction, the respective member would approach them and offer them a membership (or in case of the Zhentarim and the Waukeens priest "an offer he cannot refuse").
Very good for background & setting lore. It will help make this world more real for players & DMs. I have this starter adventure & will be DMing it for the first time this week. Never played D&D 5e before but have done lot of other RPGs. What do people recommend as a follow up to LMoP from the official D&D5e adventures?
Nice vid, been watching for a while now, appreciate the time and effort you put into these. I'm new to d&d but have been fascinated with the lore of since I was a kid...a loooong time ago. Keep up the good work.
Dont know if you'll see this, but this video gave me a HUGE new view on LMoP... really, love your vids . As a DM, you give me lot of inspiration and ideas. Keep up the good work man!!!!
Awesome video! Phandelver was the first module I played, but now I'd love to revisit it as the DM :D And now I'm wondering whether it would make sense to keep race, goals & backstory for the pregen characters, but allow players to switch out the classes (if they don't like the chosen ones), since that shouldn't impact the story...
Hi Jorphdan. The thing that no videos (your or otherwise) address are the lore tie-ins for the answers the banshee Agatha provides and the other lore tie-ins in other sections. There's so much in the way of lore tie-ins provided, but you are left wondering what becomes of Sister Garaele or the Thayan sorcerer and how this relates to the questions and answers they received. There are a bunch of these that I have forgotten from Lost Mines of Phandelver, but it would be so good to hear what logical minds would say on these mysteries. It would be very greatly appreciated if such information is available. Also, I know the Icespire Peak series continues the local adventures, but I don't think it continues these storylines. It would be great to know what Wizard had planned or plans to do surrounding these little mysteries. (I have my own alternate mysteries which relate to the dungeon B1 being at the back of the cave in Goblin Arrows, and a whole different world beyond, but to integrate well into the forgotten realms, it would be awesome if those tie-ins led to other whole adventures (thinking Dead in Thay or Dragon Hoard for the Dragon Cultist tie-in or IDK what for the Harpers tie-in or the Xentarim purpose in the area or the Lords Alliance). Anyway, lore assistance for the threads provided in Lost Mines of Phandelin or Icespire Peak would be greatly appreciated.
So I'm in the middle of using this as my first full DM experience, all of my group is experienced in playing though even myself. I don't know how but we have broken this campaign in two and now it's a political intrigue drama about bringing a single goblin into power over the goblins in the area. The book is still useful, and so is this video, but I've needed a lot more than that to keep up with this group.
There are loads of cities. Menzoberranzan is a popular city for the Drow, and Blingdenstone is a popular Deep Gnome city. I've made some videos on the Underdark that talk a little about the cities. Hopefully they'll help you. Just do a quick search as I have to run at the moment XD
@@Jorphdan looking forward to it! I'm running it very slowly but I get distracted from the source material when adding my own things to bring the story together and give it more substance. In doing so though I keep leading the party exactly where I don't yet want them! :P
I also highly recommend this adventure for new DMs though I have no idea how people finish it in 5 sessions :P But its still waaay smaller than other prewritten adventure modules.
I'm in the midst of running LMP right now, and due to timing and some of my own mods its taking much longer than 5-6 sessions. i think we are moving to session 10. But, i wanted to comment to ask how frequently these episode will come out?
I came for the lore, and wish you could explain it a bit more slowly! As you said, more for new DMs. I didn't click because I was waiting for your signature theme song at the end, and so I was a bit disappointed. I might just have to hum your old tune in my head to get that Jorphdan feeling. However, I will watch the whole video again so that I can recap the lore segment, and click the faction link at the end.
@@Jorphdan Sorry I am cryptic! Yes I really liked it. I watch as many videos of yours as I can and they are all good. As I am not a beginner, I would like more lore. I like your traditional end credits more. As I have been hesitant about my FR lore, I decided to create my homebrew campaign, which is a lot of work. But later I would like to run a FR campaign, and am trying to build up my lore knowledge.

This is exactly what I was looking for.
You're the exact viewer I was hoping for 😀
LMoP was my first 5e Adventure.
This is such a great idea for a video series - thanks Jorphdan. Can't wait to see the others videos that come out in this series!
Nice! I like this new series :D
Surprised no mention of a Green Dragon thats like on the cover, and the BlackSpider thats like the BBEG.
I think i am going to like this series.
While i am not a new DM, it does help having a lore summary.
PS - I also really love the bit after the end-card...
I'm excited to make more, thanks for the comment! Also end-cards are the best cards 😀
Great video I think if theres a way to convert the prewritten characters into npcs you can still run all the content and just have those npcs be questgivers. Just a thought
We just finished playing this, like an hour ago hahahah
It was totally fun, 2 tieflings (a fighter and a wizard) a dragonborn barbarian, a human ranger and a dwarf cleric of St. Cuthbert.
At the end, we killed the Black Spider and my dwarf cleric used the staff of spiders to gain control of the bugbears there so we could rebuild the ruins in the name of St. Cuthbert
Sounds epic, I love it 😁
Very informative and well executed. Keep these coming.
-The Lore You Know-
Thanks!
How have I not heard of you yet? I am sharing your content to my DnD5e FB group.
Awesome :D
Fantastic idea for a new video series.. crossing my fingers you dive into tales from the yawning portal
We'll see, that one's tricky but I'll do my best
I love the Dice jail in the back
Thanks! My wife made it for my birthday :D
Awesome! I would love to see your comments for other campaigns as well!
The plan is to continue with more campaigns. Working on Rise of Tiamat now :)
love this, hope you do the rest
Very good for background & setting lore. It will help make this world more real for players & DMs. I have this starter adventure & will be DMing it for the first time this week. Never played D&D 5e before but have done lot of other RPGs. What do people recommend as a follow up to LMoP from the official D&D5e adventures?
Nice vid, been watching for a while now, appreciate the time and effort you put into these. I'm new to d&d but have been fascinated with the lore of since I was a kid...a loooong time ago. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much!
Dont know if you'll see this, but this video gave me a HUGE new view on LMoP... really, love your vids . As a DM, you give me lot of inspiration and ideas. Keep up the good work man!!!!
Really nice details, thank you.
Thanks!
This is all I've been looking for, ty
I love it. I also saw your replies to other people who asked what I wanted to. I can’t wait to see your future vids like this.
Woo hoo!
Nope shouldn't impact the story at all. I think having a solid healer helps at those low levels, but yeah mix it up :D
It would be super awesome if you'd make one for the Dragon of Icespire Peak campaign!
Keep up the good work man.
"Click em, videos kinda over" works, because I listen to 100% of the video and watch 85%.
But then you miss the final 3 seconds which I spent so much time on!
@@Jorphdan 99.48%
Good video, nice map of the western heartlands.
Thanks! 😀
Great idea to move the channel forward!!
Thanks!!
Sounds like a fun run!!
Still not quite sold on this "everything after 2nd edition" stuff.
Could you do rise of Tiamat at some stage please I'm running it soon would like to know some bits about it :)
That's actually what I'm working on right now. Should be out in a couple of weeks ;)
That's awesome I can't wait. I will be waiting for it. TIAMAT COMETH :)
Did this dude just say Doobly-doo like Matt Collville? :)
Great new series, keep it up
Thanks!
I really enjoy all your videos man! I've seen them all. 😅 (twice)
That's awesome, glad you like them!
Hey lol while I breifly have your attention, are there any cities or establishments in the underdark? If so could you tell about them?
There are loads of cities. Menzoberranzan is a popular city for the Drow, and Blingdenstone is a popular Deep Gnome city. I've made some videos on the Underdark that talk a little about the cities. Hopefully they'll help you. Just do a quick search as I have to run at the moment XD
ua-cam.com/video/FhGGQJoq8nU/v-deo.html & ua-cam.com/video/IfPQJeMSQl0/v-deo.html
Great idea! Hope you'll do Princes of the Apocalypse :)
That's the plan! To get to them all eventually :)
@@Jorphdan looking forward to it! I'm running it very slowly but I get distracted from the source material when adding my own things to bring the story together and give it more substance. In doing so though I keep leading the party exactly where I don't yet want them! :P
This is great
I have this, been studying it to run my friends eventually
Do it! Run some D&D 😁
Do Waterdeep Dragon Heist next!!
I also highly recommend this adventure for new DMs though I have no idea how people finish it in 5 sessions :P But its still waaay smaller than other prewritten adventure modules.
My question...what do you use on your hair! That swoop.
Hey Jorph (the PH is silent) where'd you get that sweet map of the Sword Coast?
I got it from WotC here: dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/map-faer%C3%BCn
and printed it out at my local library :D
I love this video series already :D
Woo!
I'm in the midst of running LMP right now, and due to timing and some of my own mods its taking much longer than 5-6 sessions. i think we are moving to session 10. But, i wanted to comment to ask how frequently these episode will come out?
I'm aiming for one a month, maybe less if I find more free time
The Lore starts at 2:38
I never got why the adventure is called lost mines of phandelver. As far as i can see the only use of phandelver is in the title
I'll be honest I'm super confused by your comment. Did you like it?
@@Jorphdan Sorry I am cryptic! Yes I really liked it. I watch as many videos of yours as I can and they are all good. As I am not a beginner, I would like more lore. I like your traditional end credits more. As I have been hesitant about my FR lore, I decided to create my homebrew campaign, which is a lot of work. But later I would like to run a FR campaign, and am trying to build up my lore knowledge.
@@RichardHaywardMelbourne Cool! Well traditional credits should be back with the regular wed video series. Just trying something new for these Campaign Explained videos! :D Happy Gaming!
Dude, where did you get that full map of the Forgotten Realms you have on your wall?
From the DnD website! Search map of faerun. Then I printed it out at my local library 😁
My players consistently want to go back to neverwinter because it's a big city. Can you do a deeper video of neverwinter around 1480 Dr?
I did make this one!
ua-cam.com/video/SI2xNiS3R-0/v-deo.html
OMG where did you get that Dice Jail? :)
My wife made it for me :)
