  • Mayor Pete Buttigieg talks to Kara Swisher about systemic racism, regulating tech, and the divided Democratic Party on the Recode Decode podcast.
Among Buttigieg’s proposals for tech regulation: A national data privacy framework that guarantees the “right to be forgotten” from the internet; recognition of Uber drivers and other gig economy workers as employees with the right to unionize; and more aggressive scrutiny of companies like Facebook when they try to acquire smaller competitors like WhatsApp and Instagram.
Recode Decode will have more interviews with 2020 presidential candidates later this week: Senator Michael Bennet and entrepreneur Andrew Yang. Subscribe wherever you get your podcasts:

A scholar, an artist, a warrior, a preacher, an intellectual, and a citizen who took his fancy education and came home and used it to save his City. He could have easily made millions in the private sector but instead he helped his community and still hasn't paid off his husband's student loans for it. We need this level of sincerity, commitment to community, and real patriotism in the white house yesterday. Biden and Warren and Sanders have more maxed out donors than anyone. So if your worried about people being beholden to big money then your concern is misplaced. For all Sander's and Warren's stink about not holding fundraising events (that count toward your individual max) they bot had no problem moving millions into their coffers from such events the held in the past. There is nothing shady about a campaign fundraiser and Pete has held low dollar and high dollar ones. Its a freaking concert to see a candidate and Bernie and Liz can only demonize it because they have 100% name recognition and years of it at that. The real story her is why they all did so poorly with individual donors considering Pete was unknown a few months ago. Talk about burying the lead.

@@justmikec1327 Hi Mike. You can follow Yang's (and everyone else's) poll numbers on the site called RealClearPolitics. They publish the results of every responsible poll individually and you can see the candidate's accumulated polling average by clicking on "Democratic Nomination" directly under the big word "Polls" in the upper left corner and then selecting "National", "Iowa", "New Hampshire," etc. on the drop down menu to see how all the candidates line up with one another. The information changes almost daily as new polls come in. I actually find it fascinating to follow. If you'll click on each of the state polls listed you'll see that Andrew is actually up to 3 percent in at least one of those states even though he is at less than 1 percent in Iowa.
You seem to be making the mistake of thinking that twitter and social media are any indication of anything happening in the real world! We twitter and social media warriors make up only a tiny percentage of the entire general electorate so we can get really misled by thinking they mean anything at all in the whole picture. They really don't. It's the same with all the progressive chatter about Bernie, Tulsi, Maryanne Williamson and Mike Gravel. All but Bernie are actually polling worse than Yang. They aren't going to be factors when all is said and done but social media would have you think they were serious contenders. All but Bernie are likely to be gone by the third debate--and, if not then, certainly by the fourth.
The Des Moines Register poll is considered the "gold standard" of polling. When they asked likely voters to label candidates WITH WHOM THEY WERE FAMILIAR as "very favorable," "somewhat favorable," "somewhat unfavorable," or "very unfavorable," --and then ranked the candidates according to those responses--Yang came in #17 out of 23 candidates. He is seen as mostly unfavorable--and that has to be a reflection of both policy and personality. (By the way, Mayor Pete came in at #1.)

gdouglas999 hi and thank you for the info. I am familiar with the site but never dug into the specific state by state polling. I’m not a twitter or social media warrior. In fact I rarely respond on UA-cam only to give thanks to useful DIY videos. I started up as a result of Andrew Yang. This is my thinking, and I admit I can be wrong, I think that the role of social media is being overlooked because we are in a state of transition from traditional polling and media outlets. I think more and more people are going to podcasts and social media and that a high percentage in those fields can translate into positive primary results.

Don't waste your time on this link from Enrique the Berniecrat. While the main idea to "get money out of politics" is good, you don't have to condemn anyone who accepts "high dollar" donations (meaning a one-time contribution of the maximum of $2,800 for the entire primary campaign). It's unfair to single out Buttigieg or any other candidate for unjust criticism.
It makes no difference whether a candidate collects $2,800 at one time or $2,800 in monthly donations of smaller amounts. It's still only $2,800. Until Republicans all play by the "small donations only" purity rules, Democrats are shooting themselves in the foot if they don't hold fundraisers. We need to win in 2020 first, and then work to overturn Citizens United and fix the system to get money out of politics. Letting Trump win definitely won't fix anything. Be smarter. #ElectPete2020

I believe it would be a great idea to make the 'Freedom Dividend' universal as it would destigmitize the benefit as a citizen right instead of a welfare check that goes to the less wealthy. Millionaires and billionaires represent a small proportion of our population-- giving this to everyone evades the need for regulation on the benefit (no one would be inclined to falsify their earnings to ensure the benefit). Though I do agree that giving this to the rich will make them richer, I believe that they too deserve a cut from our wealthy nation (which we will implement a value added tax on so that we can properly collect government revenue on so that currently tax-less companies such as Amazon, Google, Netflix, etc. don't get away without contributing to the American economy in which they are based). I hope this helped! Best, José
