He wrote so differently then. His music from this era was a completely different experience from what the band's music sounds like now. I'm glad its there.
Yes that's why he's so successful, he and jordan are such musical geniuses, their composition and melodic approach is so unique and pristine like none, they incorporate it even in heavy songs without making it sound absolutely robotic and it's always refreshing to hear something new so there's that, he gives the ppl what they want and adds so much flavor to it, his solos are not like they used to be but i still enjoy watching them play because they have been one of those bands i first listened to and inspired me.
Took you on a journey…it doesn’t feel like that for a long time…couple of songs from here and there but you wouldn’t remember them like songs from that era….Haken sort of filled in the void that DT left in writing and composing for me
John back then, I feel, was able to restrain himself with his playing more. He said more with less notes, it made it that much more potent when he really let rip. I feel like he was also a bit more still connected to his jazz rooted theory.
Kevin Moore was amazing. Derek enforced the jazz/fusion influence and he respected Kevin's parts and solos. Unlike Jordan who just wants to show off all the time. Unfortunately Rudess also pushed Petrucci in the direction of overplaying and ruined the band.

His new solo album and the new LTE3 still sounds great though
The best era of Dream Theater IMO. Kevin Moore is a criminally underrated lyricist and back when Portnoy was at the helms
What a gem....I've never seen this before!!
level 69 guitar playing
The best guitar of John Petrucci
Wish Ibanez would still make the JPMs… they’d sell like mad😅. Beautiful performance.
