Thank you Katie I picked up some useful tips there as I'm planning what is a future epic ride for me anyway which whilst nowhere near the distance you're doing at around 45-50 miles is across quite hilly terrain and so even some of the weather apps you use were of benefit to me as I tend to play the BBC weather app off against the Met Office one in terms of what the weather is going to be like for my ride ahead. I freely admit I am more of a "fair weather" cyclist and so if there's a possibility of a downpour I do tend to avoid going out though if I'm out and it does rain there's nowt you can do about it but plough on so to speak but I'm not the sort that if it's rain hail or shine I'll go out, usually has to be dull or shine though having said that I do like to try and get out when I can. I also found your ideas for food useful as well.
A good tip when oiling a chain is to oil each link individually. Obviously takes longer but lubricates the chain more effectively and prevents most of the oil spraying off when riding.
Katie you are so inspiring. Faithful subscriber here. Furthest I ever rode as a teenager was 135 miles. 300 KM? omg. I know you have done longer too. Thanks to you I keep a derailleur hanger in my bike bag. My y-t-d km are just under 900... a long ride is over 2 hours for me. As far as checking tires, people should do this before every ride. I found a deep cut in a tire, and binned it. Going downhill at 70 km/hr is not a good time to learn the hard way (I haven't thank goodness). Your organizational skills are very very impressive. All the best from Canada.
You inspired me last year with your ultra long distance antics & will be doing my first a week on Wednesday. London to Staffordshire Moorlands, a little over 300km, nervous & excited! Thanks for giving me a goal (& also for Epic Ride Weather. Looks soooo useful).
Building for a 300k AUDAX in June. One addition I like to have is a small top tube bag, where I keep snacks. Keep feeding on those long rides. Will look at wax as an option for chain lube.
Not a bad idea to have a little checklist, even for rides that aren't so epic. Simple reminders like put on sunscreen or important stuff to bring. Checking weather ... yes and thanks for those website suggestions.
I always find that it's a waste of time trying to get an early night, as I just can't get to sleep because it's not my usual time to go to bed. Then after I have tossed and turned for what seems an eternity, I'm even more awake than I would have been if I had stayed up. I just live with the fact that I will get less sleep and be tired when my alarm goes off.
Vapourising CBD has worked wonders for my sleep, I can get hours more, with more proper deep sleep according to my Whoop band. I reliably pass out about 1h after taking it.
The energy you feel today is from the sleep 2 nights ago, not the night before. That's why they tell students to get 2 nights of good sleep before an exam.
Have you considered doing the south downs way this summer? Its an organised event, i think its on the 3rd of July, 170km offroad with 4000m of elevation.
I started mountain biking on Saturday after 8 years out the saddle, I didn't know a seat could impregnate me... sore isn't the word after 5 hours in cannock chase...how you do hundreds of miles is madness to me at the moment!!!
I wake up at least 1 hour earlier ahead of time to tuck in a large bowl of cereal (it might be whole rice, oats or barley even) cooked and seasoned (mostly bare sauce and oil) the night before; I find I can't really sustain my effort just relying on what I ate the day prior to the task. Don't you do the same? I can't quite remember if you mentioned something like that in the past, if so I'm sorry. And best of luck for your 300 hundred, push it but don't too much, you know what I mean? Well, I can't seem to follow my own advice, but you do it .. stay safe and enjoy it ! 😄😊
not a regular rider, rode 30k with low carb diet after work, and almost fell asleep for the last 2k, even forgot to have some bananas before. I will definitely remember 'food over impulse to ride' at all times!
We are still in lockdown in Ontario so for any ride > 10 km, remember where porta potties are on the route. I think you will absolutely KILL the 300k ride. All your winter training will pay off. I bet you could do it on the mountain bike.
As always, the sense of achievement and scenery will lead you to try again n again until finally your body transforms n allows. In scotland the midges dont allow you to walk with the bike though, and creams? Midgies treat creams like soup before the main meal... Is the weather trully predictable.?
You should do a video on how to motivate yourself for these rides. How many times do we get up in the morning and not feel like going . It usually takes me about half an hour to get into a ride sometimes.
Great checklist! Especially the nutrition part. Thanks to your encouragement I rode 120k the other weekend 😀 . All the best to you for 300k- wish for nice weather!! Ps. Pls post your power bar recipe 😋
Nice video, I'm sure you'll smash it! Good luck! What size is the saddle packthat you're using? Currently looking for one in which I can fit more than just emergency tools. Like for day trips.

And actually just convince myself I am only going around the corner and back.. hehe.. it works.. all of a sudden I am 70K away and have no other choice but to keep going, since I have to turn around for the 70k anyways..
I managed a 200km ride fairly easily a couple of months ago and I'm now going to try 300. I'm 75 yrs old but very active. I found after the 200 I was still ok for energy but my bum was very, very sore and my left hand pretty numb. Any tips would be welcome.

2018 300km was a breaker. 2019, Mallorca 312 piece of cake. Now there's a good progress marker 💪.
Been using Squirt lube last 6 months and it lasts better than other lubes and keeps my chain cleaner. Recommended!
Washes off quick tho. 1 days rain, 20 mile commute and that's it. Much Off hydro lube can be left on all week but does get dirty.
