    I am a 62 year old man who did the outer edge of Co Down yesterday at 157 km's and while wonderful, it set me at my limit. I cannot conceive how you do these rides but am delighted that you do and love these videos : you are truly an inspiration to all of us !!!

      Thanks Len :) yeah I try to be open and show when I’m feeling good and bad. If I had got the train home you would have seen that for sure haha. My little leggies kept me going this time :)

    Such an inspiration. Yes the length of the ride and stuff is impressive, but your attitude even when things go wrong the combination of strength of character and physical endurance is amazing. The attitude of "I can't grumble" is amazing.
    Chapeau.

      Jasmin thanks so much!!!!! I think it’s because it’s easy to put across this perfect video where it all goes well but we all know that’s not real life. Sometimes you want to a little cry and we all do it from time to time :)

      Ahhh it definitely is!!!!! My first 400km I literally had to have someone help me take my shoes and leg warmers off around 350km as I was so pooped. I actually had a little sob to myself. If you want it and put in time in the saddle you can ride as far as you like :)

    What?!? That's 261 miles! That's absolutely insane. I struggled with the heat and humidity just to complete 50km this morning. You're such a beast on that bike.

      @@monkeyx17 when I started I was averaging 10 or 12 miles per day. Now I average 20 - 30 miles 5 days a week. If it weren't so hot and humid here I could do more but I'd need more days to recover. For instance it was already 27C here at 9am.

    420KM !!!!! Katie, this is ridiculous. You did all that after spending a week in blah zone. You climbed, hiked, and just kept going. Even when some lady tried to literally crush your bike! Unbelievable. This video should be part of some training course. People should realize this is what they mean when they say if you get a bunch of lemons , you make a lemonade!! After all that and you get some rest and you're like ok let's plan the next route! This is definitely the spirit. We have to figure out your spirit animal because it's definitely something fierce. :D Way to go Katie!

    Back in the day my wife was a round the year randonneur twice in one year for 2 yrs running. For those that don't know that's 1 x 100, 200,400,600k rides then repeat. That was on top of a 9-5 job, bike commute to work and other rides. It's all do-able In audax world but you have to be able to afford it in money and time.

    This is really inspiring! I have never done longer rides than 200km, but I've done a few of those. This year my plan is to increase it to 250km (to start with), 300km later on would be nice. I'm going from Germany to my parents in Sweden next week, and instead of flying I decided to do a mixture of train+ferry+cycling. I'll do one long ride each weekend (on my way there, and on my way back), of about 200-240 km each. It'll be the longest solo rides so far! (Previous longest solo: 165km). My friends and parents think I'm crazy but after watching your 420km ride I got another push and more motivation! I like how you recorded this ride! I'm also planning to create a little video of my adventure. My biggest concern right now is how to bring a 15" macbook pro on my roadbike 😬😁 (I will work remotely so I need to bring it). This will be interesting!

    To try and alleviate sore hands, I use clip-on tri-bars to get a different position on the bike and take the pressure off my hands. These don't put you in an aero/tucked position as they are on risers, but provide a comfortable alternative when the roads are flat. Used them recently on a 300Km and had no issues with my hands.

    3 questions, Katie. 1. With regard to food on these long rides, how much do you take at the start and how much do you pick up along the way?; 2. with regard to distance, do you break it down into 'segments' in your head to pace yourself to ensure you don't blow up before the end? ; 3. how much is mental and how much is physical in terms of approaching these distances? Thanks in advance (if you have time to answer). GREAT channel.

    • @KatieKookaburra
      @KatieKookaburra  3 роки тому +2

      I take enough to last maybe half the ride. Just as I’m vegan and know my stuff is nicer than shop bought. But I will just make sure I know where the stops are. Yeah I generally break it up to where the big climbs are :) or where the food stops are. And I’ve done a video about distances, just search my channel for building Endurance :)

      @@KatieKookaburra Super flat, lol. Mostly farmlands - but all on light gravel trails - no cars around. And we had a group so we went pretty slow. No mountains in this part of Ontario. Have to save that for a more epic trip.

    Well done on sticking to it and completing such a long ride. You might be better off with a right angled USB cable, they have barely any amount sticking out the bottom of your device. You might be able to keep the Wahoo the right way up while you charge it.

    What a fantastic video and a great ride all done with a good sense of humour. Myself and a group of riders are doing a 400k ride this Saturday and watching this video has definitely given me some food for thought. Ours is a slightly flatter route around the east midlands in a group of eleven sweaty men! If you have any other tips they would be most welcome!

    Hi Katie K! I'm so mightily impressed by your fitness and your super-marathon rides! On your own? This takes some doing, no-one to hide behind for some wind shelter!
    What does surprise me is your route planning... Or, severe lack thereof! You don't plan your routes? 😮 I mean, Sutton Bank is horrible!!!! How did you not notice the double chevrons (of a 1:5 and steeper) on the map, not to mention the contours being so close together that they become a brown mass?!! 🤪 You also walked up steps and walked along a rough track. Can you ask Ordnance Survey for their sponsorship? The maps can be downloaded to a device.
    Blue Bank out of Whitby? Brutal!!
    Your pic of York, was most unflattering, around the Barbican and the A19...
    Many years ago, when I was your age(!) I cycled Morecambe-Scarborough-Morecambe with seven other guys. The group ride certainly made it easier.
    Do you only walk to train-down after a huge ride?

    • @KatieKookaburra
      @KatieKookaburra  3 роки тому +1

      Hahah ahhh I checked it through but they few gravel tracks showed as ‘roads’ on the map. Nee bother, stuff goes wrong. And Sutton Bank I knew was a climb on the route just didn’t realise how busy it would be. We live and learn aka make mistakes haha!

    Firstly what an incredible achievement , you certainly are very very fit .Can you tell there is a but?
    I’m cycling LEJOG over 10 days starting tomorrow and that and the comment from the chap that had just done the ‘Fred’ got me thinking .I wonder if you ever reflect on your rides/ challenges and the impact on people who watch your channel . We set ourselves challenges but then they are put into perspective by your escapades ,so yes in one sense you are an inspiration ,but countering that is the “diminishment “of our personal challenges . It’s a thought that I’m sure you have had but is something that is rarely ,if ever ,commented on by your subscribers . I suppose if one is susceptible to those negative thoughts the answer is don’t watch 😁

      Heeey, if I ever see someone do something bigger / harder than me I only ever see it as inspiration and encouragement that maybe I could do it too. And from your comments I think it’s the same from you all who watch my videos.

      Thanks for you reply and your comments in your latest video . My comment and your reply highlight the tension between you,as a you tube creator ,and me as a you tube consumer .Creators have a whole bunch of reasons why they create videos and not all of those fit into how consumers of those videos interpret the content.This , of course , is outside your control . I realise that you tube has a voracious appetite for content and that posting a video of a pootle round the local park is not going to set the world on fire nor is it going to satisfy your sponsors. However I was merely trying to suggest a bit of reflection /recognition on the possible negative impact of some of your content . After all we are all only to well aware of the insidious nature of social media . Remember not all of us have the time or inclination to spend as much time on the bike as yourself.
      I absolutely don’t doubt that you want to inspire people , and that you do , but maybe just spare a thought for us mere cycling mortals .You may think that you are inspiring all the time but sometimes I just think why am I bothering as my 150k looks pathetic !!As I said that’s out of your control and we don’t have to watch do we ?
      On a positive I think your channel is brilliant with informative and inspiring content ( mostly )… I know that’s a surprise !!
