This might be a low point in Eddies career but make no mistake, this guy inspired thousands of kids to pick up a guitar and chase that dream. Hes one of the best and deserves all respect. Don't take my word, VH 1, VH 2, Women And Children First, Fair Warning, Diver Down, !984. Master Class
Low point, Hight point! He could play no matter what! I'm more of a Van Hagar fan! As long as he was alive and playing I didn't care! He is /was God on the guitar!
WTF, he's Edward Van Halen, a rock god pioneer! He changed the way rock guitar is played and also paved the way for unbelievable guitar solos! Yes this was a low point for him before he sobered up... I would just like to know why are there so many haters out there? Does it make you feel good to tear down a person who is less than well? He is human just like yourself! You've never had a low point in your life? Think about it! You should pray for Edward and remember all the incredible music he has made throughout the years! Just makes me wonder what has become of the moral fabric of society? Make love not war! PEACE!
Sometimes brilliant light can be dimmed by clouds..but then the light shines again..brighter...and eternal. Genius. Still hearing you play, Eddie. Lots of love from earth...we miss you.
It would've been incredible just being that close to him! Then to have him pick the guitar and play that would've been heaven! You could tell he didn't want to be there yet he was there. Love you Eddie!
Thanks for posting this. To sit there while Edward jams would be a treat indeed. That boogie piece at the end is terrific, I hope that it ends up on a record. Al would have a ball with it.
Just travel to Chicago, well those day's are over, I went i '95,'96',97, met edwierd vn Heineken, everytime worse than the last, I was a big BIG van halen fan until that, all the respect I had for him...died, the only bigger assholes were, "1- slash, #2 malmsteen. I do admit he changed the guitar, the way it was from what it is, they started out in the synth, new wave, disco epoch, soon found out, "Man you can't do that on a synth" If you think eddie changed everything your world must be very small.
We all have low points in our lives...but most of us don't have cameras following us around to catch it for all the world to see. I loved Eddie. Sometimes he pissed me off, but I was a fan of his since that first album. It sucks so bad that he's not here anymore. RIP King
You can pray for him to get better because until you walk in his shoes, who are we to critisize him. Every true genius reaches a point where they just about self destruct in one form or another. He obviously needs help but he'll have to make that decision.
It kills me to watch such a gifted human being let drugs destroy everything they have worked so hard, all their lives for. Eddie is, in my opinion, the greatest rock guitarist that has ever lived. R.I.P
Im a EVH guy from way back, but 2 things hit me in this, 1- this feels like he had to do this for some kinda reason, 2- everytime i look at the comments he plays something cool
Ed's playing here reminds me of how I feel when I pick up the guitar and I'm just not feeling it. You sort of dink and noodle around and nothing goes anywhere, nothing sounds right, etc... Ed was clearly uninspired here for whatever reasons and it shows through in his playing. He was probably in a bad place when this was taped. Now he seems much happier and healthier-- and his playing reflects that.
777zippy777 to be honest, even when you’re sober and you pick up your axe and start noodling away you can sometimes automatically feel uninspired or motivated. Never mind just being a little tired or have sore hands or arms or something. Most people here talkin shit have probably never made any musical input in their lives ever.. so you can all fuck up and respect eddie van halen
No one is asking Mohamad Ali to climb back in the ring 30 years later. Musicians are people, they change, of course he doesn't have the same hunger or flare that he did at 21... I'm surprised he doesn't just tell people to buy the album, he's not a circus freak. At any rate some guys mature better than others'.. I think Eddie deserves a ton of respect and I could give a fiddlers fuck who can play a dotted arpeggio etc.. without Edward's contribution many of us wouldn't be here talking guitar
I'm sure everyone has reached the point, at least once, when even their best shit hurts. Eddie has always been the kind of player that tells you whats going on inside him by his playing. He's THE guitar god both stoned and sober. In fact, It's never been about what he's on....it's all about how he feels. He's perfectly........human Thank God. When I see this video, it makes me want to ask Eddie if he needs my help to go kick someones ass or steal whatever's been taken back.
He was only human. It doesn't matter how many times a MAN falls down, it's whether he gets BACK UP! Eddie got back up, unfortunately that vile and ugly cancer ultimately won but Edward fought and never gave up fighting. Rest in Paradise Eddie!
walk cold into a bright room full of strangers that all came to see a magic show and they want it right now. even living legends need to warm up.eddie on his worst day would bash your head in
@ice9001 What are you talking about? Eddie gave us like 10 ALBUMS while he had a drinking problem! The point is, he went through a marked change at some point, this uncomfortable moment being right in the middle of it...
haha poor Ed. Even he couldn't play the intro lick to Mean Street. I highly doubt he could play the actual Spanish Fly version from the album. He was a very "in the moment" sort of player. Lots of ad libs and very focused WHEN he was focusing. Plus time and too much uh.... imbibing and so on can just do a number on your memory too. Those dang harmonics aren't jumping out like they did when he recorded that. But then... that's not the same guitar he used nor the same amp, I'm quite sure. MM begged him with $ so he took the deal and pimped MM guitars instead of just using the same ones he used to use which obviously were "good enough".
Do u think maybe Ed had too much Meth the night before this? Love the guy, he inspired me to play Guitar but i think too much time spent alone in the 5150 studio did this to him!
When you state that he had no idea what notes he was playing and didn't care, it comes to mind what a great guitar player (can't remember...doesn't matter) once said...in order to play well you need to know what the note is going to sound like before you hit it. Hendrix didn't know the notes either, if it was an A# or D or Bf. But he knew what the note was going to sound like before he hit it. That's a helluva gift to have, and that gift is one reason why Eddie and Hendrix rose to the top.
I read in the Tone Chaser Book at one Nam show Eddie got so wasted he catatonic and hiding under a table. Sad. He’s still my hero and best rock guitarist.
I don't care how drunk he is either. . .surprised though that Eddie owes everyone something. There are moments that shine just gimme a break, the guy can do whatever he wants.
I think you should go back and read all the Guitar Player and Guitar World interviews with EVH and I think you will probably change your mind on that. He often said he had no idea what notes he was playing and did not care about all the analysis. How much of that is BS we can't say, but learning "classical piano" as a child is not the same as going on in adult life to a conservatory etc. You over-estimate that, I'm afraid. And you haven't said one thing about his right hand.
Eddie always acts like it is the first time he is searching for tone at concerts, in these settings or privately. He is never happy just playing guitar - almost uncomfortable at times watching him live.
Tell me about it. I heard a huge shift in his tone when he stopped using Marshall amps. You can really hear it comparing Live Without a Net with Live: Right Here, Right Now. Even when going to see his live shows. Totally impressed by everything but his tone, which was really shrill.
Couldn't agree more. His tone sucked from the first tour without Marshalls, till his last. Look at the mess he made of Meanstreet, a fuzzy, buzzy high gain bullshit tone.
If you listen closely you can hear "A different kind of truth" riffs in this!!! Honestly I like this kind of backstage noodle/jam stuff he plays vs the same old same old riffs! Just my opinion tho
I think this video is a very positive thing. This proves no one just has magical ability, even a mega-talent like Eddie has to practice and maintain his skills. He says here he hasn't really played guitar in four years, and so even he finds the "Mean Street" intro hard to play. I just wish the people around the camera would shut up so we could hear him talk better. What do they think they have to say at a guitar show that's more interesting than what Eddie Van Halen has to say?
If I was there I would have told the crowd to fucking shut up and show some respect for this great man we came to see and support . Love and miss you Eddie ..!
The internet has been a curse for seeing who your idols really are. EVH was everything to me as a kid in the 80’s. Unfortunately since then I’ve seen him make a fool of himself by showing up wasted to public events like this and act like a real jerk to good guys like Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar. He’ll always be a guitar great in my eyes but he’ll never be what he was.
I miss Eddie so much. Love this. No matter what era or year, nobody can touch him. He’s still the best guitar player ever. EVH FOREVER ❤️🤟
Damn straight brother!
Low point, Hight point! He could play no matter what! I'm more of a Van Hagar fan! As long as he was alive and playing I didn't care! He is /was God on the guitar!
@@chrisrainey3588god would have kept their teeth
He has a sound which, drunk or otherwise, is superb and instantly recognizable. I love to hear this man play, any way, anyhow anywhere!
WTF, he's Edward Van Halen, a rock god pioneer! He changed the way rock guitar is played and also paved the way for unbelievable guitar solos! Yes this was a low point for him before he sobered up... Deeply written
I wish I could play like that when I'm all fucked up
I wish I could play like that when I'm sober.
mrhyde2484 HELL YEA !!!!!!!
Sometimes brilliant light can be dimmed by clouds..but then the light shines again..brighter...and eternal. Genius. Still hearing you play, Eddie. Lots of love from earth...we miss you.
Eddie came from no where and didn't have much of anything but he has the rythm from within. We can pick apart anyone.he is who he is- the best.
It would've been incredible just being that close to him! Then to have him pick the guitar and play that would've been heaven! You could tell he didn't want to be there yet he was there. Love you Eddie!
True ..!
Back when i first saw this i remember being embarrassed for him. Now he’s gone and it makes me miss him
5:44 - That lick/riff, whatever you want to call it, became the song "As Is" on the "Different Kind of Truth" album
Yep amazing
His playing gives me the chills every time miss you Eddie Vanhalen legends never die
Thanks for posting this. To sit there while Edward jams would be a treat indeed. That boogie piece at the end is terrific, I hope that it ends up on a record. Al would have a ball with it.
Drunk or sober he still shreds epically
IDK man...
Ummmm …. No
The Edward Van Heineken phase. Back when he was duct taping his shoes together and pulling out his own teeth with pliers.
Bless his heart, that boy definitely needed a break to get himself together.
R.I.P Edward Van Halen. Legend !
With all respect to the great Eddie, but he looked homeless here. So cool he got clean.
The man who changed everything in 1978....
Thank God he cleaned up, sobered up, put some weight on and is playing amazing these days. This, well, this was a low, low point.
Did he? Good for him. We all have our imperfections. I hope he is doing good.
The 2015 tour was amazing...his playing was back at EVH level of playing like the old days....wish I could say the same about DLR....yikes!
The great EVH on a totally uninspired day. When your heart aint in it , This is how it goes.
Looks like he came out of a trash can...but then give him a guitar
He still plays better than me when he's all fucked up
I will never get rid of my 5150 II love that amp. Thank you sir, R.I.P. you will be in my thoughts.
Not gonna lie, he looks bad here
Don't care though, my favorite guitarist hands down, and the reason why I first took an interest in music
all the riffs he has up his sleeve that we haven't even heard
We all have low points in our lives...but most of us don't have cameras following us around to catch it for all the world to see.
I loved Eddie. Sometimes he pissed me off, but I was a fan of his since that first album.
It sucks so bad that he's not here anymore.
RIP King
Eddie's back and sober too. He's come a long way since this video.
Wow even the way he was here you can still see and hear the Genius of this man. RIP
Eddie was amazing!!!!!!!!! DAMN IT HE SHOULD STILL BE HERE! It's unreal that he's not still here doing shows.
I was in that room that day and it was not a memory I wish I had
eddie drinks aquafina...i think aquafina's stock prices just rose!
Man I'm glad he cleaned his act up.
You can pray for him to get better because until you walk in his shoes, who are we to critisize him. Every true genius reaches a point where they just about self destruct in one form or another. He obviously needs help but he'll have to make that decision.
Alcohol addiction is horrible. So happy Ed beat the bottle.
It kills me to watch such a gifted human being let drugs destroy everything they have worked so hard, all their lives for. Eddie is, in my opinion, the greatest rock guitarist that has ever lived. R.I.P

Imagine Hendrix with “tapping” in his arsenal 🤯 Thank you EVH🤘🏼
Cool to see that.
He was pretty buzzed there!!!
JB
i love watching Eddie just goof around. Its like little gems he leaves on the world
Even here he is at least playing better than me :)
I was at that NAMM show. I met EVH. He was really nice.
I have a hard time with this. What happened to Eddie?
At this point Eddie had absolutely nothing to prove. He lived a life loving what he did. that's what life is.
Good video quality, thanks for uploading :)
If you listen from 5:44 to 6:46, you will notice the riff from ''As Is'' from Van Halen's 2012 album.
The Peavey models were great. Always picked one up to play at the guitar stores. I'll get one eventually. The Ernie Ball models too were great.
I don't care how drunk he is in this video. The man has magic in his hands and he changed the face of guitar playing with the tap of his finger.
Eddie can do no wrong!!! It's amazing what he does with that thing.
Still a genius
No one is asking Mohamad Ali to climb back in the ring 30 years later. Musicians are people, they change, of course he doesn't have the same hunger or flare that he did at 21... so many cool unknown song riffs, so much material I wish we could hear
you're never too young to have a vietnam flashback
I clicked on this for Eddie Van Halen-but I FUCKIN" LOVED the Teen Town thing at the beginning! thanks for posting this.
A rock star on drugs and drunk? What's the world coming to! But seriously, EDDIE RULEZ!!
I'm sure everyone has reached the point, at least once, when even their best shit hurts. Eddie has always been the kind of player that tells you whats going on inside him by his playing. Amen dude, look at him play now that he's back in shape, he's tearing it up night after night.
walk cold into a bright room full of strangers that all came to see a magic show and they want it right now. even living legends need to warm up.eddie on his worst day would bash your head in
i dont ever want to see this again... Hope he has picked himself up for good again this time.
@ice9001 What are you talking about? Eddie gave us like 10 ALBUMS while he had a drinking problem! The point is, he went through a marked change at some point, this uncomfortable moment being right in the middle of it...

agreed. hes a mere shadow of his former self. like a mad scientist..
Randy Eddie Darrell SRV the reason
that 3:11 to 3:14 lick was really sick. that one guy who said "yeah!" right after knew what's up.
At 5:43 of this video, isn't that the riff that Eddie did when he appeared on Two and 1/2 Men episode? Two Burritos and a Root Beer Float!
Yes it is!
guitar won't do any feedback and he's clearly upset over that. STICK WITH THE OLD MARSHALLS AND FRANKENSTRAT, ED!
Do u think maybe Ed had too much Meth the night before this? Love the guy, he inspired me to play Guitar but i think too much time spent alone in the 5150 studio did this to him!

This is B4 he checked in and sorted himself out , he is proper wrecked !!!
used to be great, may be great again, but breaks my heart in this vid.
Instead of just playing the damn guitar, Eddie is so worried about what his little “tricks” sound like.
well no matter how ya look at it he's still the best guitar of all time
I read in the Tone Chaser Book at one Nam show Eddie got so wasted he catatonic and hiding under a table. Sad. He’s still my hero and best rock guitarist.
R.I.P. Eddie!! 1955-2020
Wolfgang is every bit as awesome as you knew he'd be, he's awesome!!!!!

Go Eddie, Go! His hat needs a flower on the front of it.
HE IS JUST GOOFIN AROUND HAMMERED BUT STILL ROCKIN OUT.
I don't care how drunk he is either. . .surprised though that Eddie owes everyone something.
There are moments that shine just gimme a break, the guy can do whatever he wants.
ed looks a bit spun out,i love this guy the best of the best
luckily this was long time ago ... now eddie is good and hes playeng is better than ever ...
Meth Eddie Period
Looks like Armandinho, on the thumbnail, playing his baiana's eletric guitar!
even great guitar players have their worst days...not to offend Eddie...I guess we all know Eddies Human...Love the feed back and clean playin'
RIP EVH

The pressure to be him is getting to him, lol.
I would KILL to find that custom shop wolf he is playing here

nomatter what people say..... evh is a legend and will always be! long live my man ! ur too good be true... GET UP & MAKE IT WORK !
Low point for EVH, but great that he climbed out of this to provide us with some great tours, playing in top form. RIP Edward!
I think this video is a very positive thing. This proves no one just has magical ability, even a mega-talent like Eddie has to practice and maintain his skills. He says here he hasn't really played guitar in four years, and so even he finds the "Mean Street" intro hard to play.

Even just fuckin around he was the best.
RIP EDDIE !!
what the hell is he wearing lol
+AndyNyle I think he's going for the homeless Buddhist look man, or he is down to his mostly clean pile of laundry.
+AndyNyle jeans and a t shirt, what do you wear?
If you cast your minds back you’ll remember how popular grunge fashion was in the ’90s- in 2003 he just happened to be a decade behind the times.
I don’t know how anybody could be talking through this. This was an important event.
all good things come to a end
The internet has been a curse for seeing who your idols really are. EVH was everything to me as a kid in the 80’s. Unfortunately since then I’ve seen him make a fool of himself by showing up wasted to public events like this and act like a real jerk to good guys like Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar. He’ll always be a guitar great in my eyes but he’ll never be what he was.
I like the block inlays in his Peavey..
I like the fact that he's just goofing off here and the clothes were clearly donned just for laughs, he's a crazy guy and a great player :)
Not on form or not, I'd kill to be this good.
