What I love about this is... When I was a tween I took piano lessons, I found the music sheet for this song and I asked my piano teacher to teach me this song. She did and 17 years later this is the only song I know how to play to this day. Except! I always forget how to play this part 3:38!!! And here I am watching the man who wrote the song struggle on the same exact spot. Made me feel better hahaha
Wow i didn't know Billy actually played that. I always sort of assumed he knew what he wanted and got a session piano player or something too play it. He's an amazingly talented guy.
i took this video from a dvd that i downloaded from a bittorrent site. The dvd was called the "666 sessions" and it was about the mellon collie recording sessions. This video was at the beggining of the dvd.
how beautiful... i mean, how many rockers can actually do that... one of the most beautiful songs on the MCIS album. Billy, man, you're truly a genius. we love you man...
for some reason since kid this song always bring my images of jolly roger bay from mario 64, was the time, also find the atmosphere of both themes similar, love it.
Qué sentimiento tan nostálgico transmites de tus manos tan magicas. Eres un genio Billy aún recuerdo ese Discman que llevaba a todas partes escuchando todo el disco. Eres pura inspiración
This is definitely going on my favorites! Some interesting things to note are a) that Billy seems to be playing the piece in a different key than indicated in the score (I think he's playing it half step up for more white keys), and that billy's fingering suggests he's self-taught (note that he seems to have a beginner's piano book on the piano). I love how meek Billy appears in this, and how he is not embarrassed by mistakes. Thanks for the amazing upload
RazrHack I agree, it would have been too long. But I wish he would have recorded this version and released it on a rarities album like The Aeroplane Flies High
Oh that! The people recording this had no idea that what they were about to record was close to genius despite Billy's stops and stutters and surprisingly they don't seem to realise it while they are filming either! I'm mesmerised by it. Like others I really appreciate hearing the extra pieces in this demo and could visualise this longer version becoming a glorious start to any concert - one spotlight on the keyboard and a shiny black piano. There is another glorious demo version though (without the organ) on a later version of the album and its definitely worth listening too.
I love this guy and wish I'd been more familiar with their music way back in the mid or even early 2000s though i was quite young maybe 14-15. Some guy had given me or I might have bought it can't remember, but I wore this Smashing Pumpkins t -shirt throughout most of 6th and 7th grade but it never occurred to me to look into their music for some reason. I guess certain music is meant for certain periods in life. So glad I finally discovered this group.
Damned, How come he just spawns those simple but so gooood notes with 3 fingers per hand? Billy was à true Genius......and that part was the summary of that millenium !!!! Autistic? I don't care: this Guy was the best in the late 1990s!!!!!!!
I know the video's super blurry but I saw an upgraded version of this scene. At the beginning you can see the sheet music for "My Blue Heaven". Aeroplane Flies High, anyone?
Not the biggest of fan of some of the meandering noodling you hear in places, but I wish the first half of the piece was part of the officially released version we know today.
fucking awesome!!! it's like a christmas story but instead of don't shoot your eye out billy's mom's like "we got you a piano, but don't start going all 'goth' on me now, like little trent down the street..."
god.. miss you billy..,. seeing this video makes me feel like staying in touch with billy so close,. so, thank you for sharing this video! [okrendezvous|rendezvousmaya]
Well I don't like to make my comments long, besides the fact that youtube won't allow it, but I got the info from several of the many "fan-made bios" there are. And yes, it did come out from his mouth. I never questioned your hard-core-ness, and let me tell you, it's admirable xD
True, but I absolutely love piano driven Smashing Pumpkins songs. So much stuff on Adore was amazing, even the outtakes that were sent on Judas O were amazing. Perhaps practice a bit more, but I know he's not a pianist, and doesn't have time to take piano that seriously.
What a butthole, I love it! The camera guy trying to fit the candle in the shot was pissing me off. I remember this video in 95 when MTV used it in an interview about sp from Gish to MCIS. I think it was in anticipation of the release of MCIS album. Great vid. I would love to find a copy of the MTV special they did.
He must have written and always played the piece in the key of D. The song on the album is a semi-tone lower in C#. This segues well into "Tonight, Tonight" which is in F# I believe on the album. I can only speculate, but perhaps Billy sang Tonight Tonight better a semi-tone lower and both Mellon Collie & Tonight Tonight were lowered a semi-tone - Mellon Collie from D to C#, and Tonight, Tonight from G to F#. Or perhaps, they just liked the sound better being a semi-tone lower. In any case, it appears that Billy always plays Mellon Collie in the key of D, at least in this video and on another live performance video I saw.
The true confessions online thing? He never talks about piano in there but he was almost all self taught on guitar because his father wouldn't teach him because he said he would be too lazy and not practice or something along those lines. I know he started playing piano around the release of Siamese Dream though.
billy organ
Jajaj
HHHAAHAH
Lmao 🤣
Is a God

Extraordinary theme specially designed for those who are alone, on a dark night lying on a bed and meditating on life
You are right sir.
Seems like most the songs are
You just described the album’s aura perfectly
sounds like me
Alone on Christmas Eve....you said it....
Play this at my funeral
Most beautiful melancholic piano tune of all time
Tom De Raedt i was just thinking this. Its not cheerful but it is optimistic
Although I love this, gotta say that Aphex twin- avril 14th takes the first place
I’ve always felt at peace when hearing this piece. It never sounded sad to me.

Wow i didn't know Billy actually played that. I always sort of assumed he knew what he wanted and got a session piano player or something too play it. He's an amazingly talented guy.
@@AnimationByDylan Liberace died almost a decade before this
its not a terribly hard piece
Billy knows how to play the piano and make it look as if he is typing on a computer keyboard 😋
Beautiful. The man who saved my life. 🙏
i took this video from a dvd that i downloaded from a bittorrent site. The dvd was called the "666 sessions" and it was about the mellon collie recording sessions. This video was at the beggining of the dvd.

Billy is a genious, you got to have talent to make such beautiful songs without knowing how to read music, talent in your heart babe
this is proof that billy corgan is lightyears ahead of any musician today.Long Live the Mighty SP!
My, we've traveled many roads and years since this
this isnt the version on the CD. Its darker and sadder on this. Probably in a different key
D key bro
Musical genius performing a touching melody,.. thank you Billy..
He's playing it in D minor here, the saddest of all keys.
jneiner I noticed that, too... I cry like a baby every time I see this
It's actually D Major. take another listen.
D mixolydian
Reminds me of a little piece called "Lick my Lovepump".
Was his piano tuned a half step lower in the record or was it just a one time thing that he played in a different key?
Idk much about piano players and just straight piano ballads but I think this is the best piece of music ever written on a piano.
i was like "that doesnt sound like the final version very much.." and OH there it is
1:42 to 1:56. The absolute best part in my opinion. Sounds so very happy and sincere.
I’ve known this song for years now, I still say the same thing
OH MY GOD.
what a great sweater.
i love him
for some reason since kid this song always bring my images of jolly roger bay from mario 64, was the time, also find the atmosphere of both themes similar, love it.
Mellon Collie was released in 1995 and Super Mario 64 in 1996.
Hell yeah.
Damn, Billy’s last form with hair.. now that’s an Infinite Sadness 💫
finger posture doesn't matter so much if you are a musical genius
Lots of people play with their pinkies curled up like that.
The peak of his musical creativity.
This is the most moving song in the Smashing Pumpkins' collection. Just the feeling from hearing it sends chills down my spine.
Just beautiful

yes, there's where the feelings begin!
thank you jesus
Billy probably was a nerd. Nerds make great music. Music becomes your best friend when you don't have a lot of them.
this original one is perfect. simply perfect. I almost cried when I listen it. perfect.
I want 90's BACK! :(
Still find this so adorable lol cute! :) (:
One of my favorite songs ever
I think it will be the sketch of MCIS, so beutifull, watch how the melody we all know stars to getting shape, see how it borns.. Just amazing.. lml
I used to fall asleep to this every night
looks like he's playing it in a funeral home, great video :)
This gives me goose bumps every time. Thank you Mr.Corgan. You are a brilliant man
@ 1:57 when billy looks at the camera and has his eyebrows up just makes my heart melt.
Best sweater ever
I have never heard that first of the song part on any albums that I know of but it's beautiful
Probably improv
It is great, but I'm glad it was cut out of the finished album. It would've made MCIS too long of an overture for the album.
RazrHack I agree, it would have been too long. But I wish he would have recorded this version and released it on a rarities album like The Aeroplane Flies High
The longer version is clearly the superior one. A true SP fan would embrace the song doesn’t matter how much longer it is than the original.
wow.. i've never figured out in my life i would watch - and listen - something like that! just great!
Oh that! The people recording this had no idea that what they were about to record was close to genius despite Billy's stops and stutters and surprisingly they don't seem to realise it while they are filming either! I for one enjoyed the glimpse of his crib. Looks plush
I always wondered what Billys ceiling had looked like. Thank you awesome videotographer!

love that sweater... it's a Cosby sweater... a COSBY SWEATER!!

I had that same sweater. In 1982. My grandmother knitted it for me.

Beautiful final series of notes. The intro was different but I liked it alot it gave more emphasis on the main riff of the song.

Mosh Stein I wonder why I wonder why, then I wonder why I wonder!
He probably plays it in d because you don’t have to play as many black notes. He’s not even a piano player so he’s just trying to make it easier.
@@stantonh1452 I play it in C
That was nice memory

thanks for showing us the house... :)

the intro came is someothing he turned into a song cant think of the title but you can hear the similarities
fuck yeah! i never heard that intro to the song.
