  • A client recently asked me to treat their gate with Creosote, unbeknown to me, this stuff is no longer manufactured. So this is Creocote, Bartoline's alternative to Creosote.
    This dark brown oil based wood treatment is fantastic, it goes on really well and looks great. It made painting and treating this gate and posts a joy.

    Takes 24/48 hours to dry.
    Better than water based paints. Oil soaks in. I've the light brown treatment. Let's the grain and knots show through.
    A tip is that make sure you get the same batch as different batch numbers might be a slight shade difference. So the barcode on the front of container is batch number 👍

    This stuff is okay. It also mixes well with boiled linseed if you want to change the shade a bit - 2:5 ratio Creocote dark:BLO produces a sort of antique oak type colour which might be useful, it also seems to speed the drying a bit (but might just be because less creocote being used)

    I use fresh engine oil, not the most expensive one, for dark and used motor oil so the colour differnce is not too great and I add Diesel, into the mix. I tried Bartoline and it is terribleI (like my speeling and grammer, but hey what do expect from fumes of tar based and engine oil products), then got hold of Traditional Creosote and wow that was a game changer. I had to paint hr fence every 3 years with Bartoline. WIth traditional Creosote I have not painted the fence for 10 years and will do it this year. It 30% more but when you think you save so much time it makes sence. Word of warding wear good PPE as I got the Bartoline and I ended up with dermatitis, and a condition called Nodular Pryrigo which left permanent scarring.

    This stuff is great but way too runny. I pour it into small containers, stick it in the freezer for an hour and use it on a cold day (below 10c) it makes is so much easier to work with. Doesnt drip everywhere and u can fit more on each brush stroke so not re dipping every 2 seconds.

    Found an old container of the stuff which was still in good nick as it was still sealed and I’ve just used and already it’s great stuff, but had to buy the same product you’ve brought as I needed more and they don’t make the older version any more as “green peace” and all that but it’s still great stuff highly recommend 👌🏻 and if you find it too thick you can always add a little % of diesel and it works great through a small pump sprayer from B&Q, if you keep the container of the stuff for years it will get very thick so add diesel to the container let it sit over night and then shake it up before you apply it and it works great

    Awesome vid, I've just bought some for a horse mount I'm making for my sister in-law so it'll be living outside in a stable yard, didn't want to use water based as I thought the oil based would be longer lasting, ps, I walked into a lamppost covered in creosote on a night out once, do you think I pulled that night, did I @#$& 😂😂

    Does this stuff prevent from things like rot and weather damage or is it just a stain?

    • @lemagreengreen
      @lemagreengreen 3 роки тому

      Like any oil finish, it does prevent rot and weather damage. Makes wood not very nice for bugs to live in and makes it water resistant. Has to be re-applied annually.

    Hi Justin, nice and well-spoken video. I've built raised beds yesterday out of pre treated softwood green sleepers. Do you know what shade this would turn out like as we really like the gate colour but the posts are too dark? Thanks man, Danny.

      Hi Danny, thanks man, perhaps you should try the light brown creocote, you can always do two coats if not dark enough.

    Old, used engine oil is just as good, and free. It will also give you a darker look on that planed timber.

    Question! Does this stuff wipe off metal and not damage it? I want to treat my side gate but it has metal latches and handles etc which I’m worried will end up getting covered in it and then can’t remove it?!

    • @JBTV
      @JBTV  3 роки тому

      Make sure you wipe it off straight away 👍

    Is this stuff ok to use in a residential area on a new picket fence. How long does it smell and does it completely dry or stay oily?

    • @JBTV
      @JBTV  3 роки тому

      It dries eventually but is oil based so takes a while. Being outside it will soon weather and won't smell after a while.

    Is creocote OK for decking? I've been using it for 5 years on my deck but now see others say it shouldn't be used on decking?

    • @tomar3
      @tomar3 2 місяці тому +1

      Jackie it's only because it will transfer to clothing etc. Still works well as a preserver but the oil takes a long time to fully dry

    Is there a way you can use fence paint over this ? Turns out my dad has used this on our fence and we now want it grey

    • @JBTV
      @JBTV  3 роки тому

      Perhaps once it has completely dried, and you use an oil based alternative.
