  • Learn how I made beads from dried funeral flowers. I will share some tips and show step by step how I made beads. I used the beads from a funeral to make a rosary, a memorial bracelet, and three pocket rosaries.
    Making the beads -
    Supplies -
    Dorlands Wax amzn.to/3HNBugI
    Bead Piercing Needles amzn.to/4bmjrMd
    Oven Thermometers amzn.to/3UosMgs
    Sculpey Premo™ Polymer Oven-Bake Clay amzn.to/3HIR5yo
Silver Mesh Holder for baking in oven amzn.to/3Sm6GZu
    Tips:
For cutting the clay - I first tried to roll a log and then cut the same size section. I was not able to get a consistent size bead. I found rolling and cutting out a small shape worked best.
For forming the bead - I bought a Sculpey bead maker but even the smallest size was way too big. Honestly, rolling these small beads perfectly round was my biggest challenge.
For protecting the bead - The most recommended varnish on the internet was Varathane® Ultimate Polyurethane Crystal Clear. It caused my white bead to turn brown from the pinkish brown flower petal bleeding. I ended up using Dorland's Wax Medium very, very thinly applied.
    Making flexwire rosary -

    Some supplies I ordered - a.co/dDDa0mH
The rosary parts (crucifixes/centerpieces) are readily available. Check Etsy.
I had wire and crimps already. This is suggested -- .019 Soft Flex wire with 2 mm crimps
    Making a chain rosary -

    Some supplies I ordered - a.co/dDDa0mH
I used the largest sized eye pins in the set I bought and cut a bit off. If my beads had been a bit smaller (8mm), the medium would have been perfect.
The rosary parts (crucifixes/centerpieces) are readily available. Check Etsy.
I had jump rings from a previous project.

Wow that’s a great idea. Does the wax rub off after the rosaries have been used?

The wax dries on the beads. Just use a very thin amount though. Like barely coating them. If you use too much, it will feel waxy. But the wax does not rub off.

Can you tell me the name of the pens you used to put the beads on to dry? They are not coming up when I click on the link you gave. Thanks, Stacy

@Taylor Jacob for the red beads, I used red Sculpey clay and used red petals that dried sort of a brownish red color. The petals are the darker bits in the bead.

How long do you allow flowers to “ dry out”

    • @marianoshaughnessy

My daughter dried the flowers and then sent them to me. I think she let them dry for a few weeks. The petals should feel very brittle, like paper. They should crumble in your hand. But since I needed tiny bits, I still had to cut them smaller.
