Robust and quality-controlled methods are the cornerstone of scientifically valid discovery and monitoring. In routine analytical chemistry, the ring trial is the means to ensure that laboratories meet acceptance criteria across geographies and across different instrument platforms. Nevertheless, many cutting edge technologies do not expose themselves to this accepted standard to prove their validity. Especially in metabolomics research, many methods are locally sourced and never compare method reproducibility and robustness internationally. For the field to become relevant in biomarker discovery and precision medicine, the drive towards quantitation and standardization is essential.
