That line "give me what I want & i will go away" always stuck with me.
Didn't he have a slogan he would say before the victims died
"Born in lust, turn to dust. Born in sin, COME ON IN." Thank You for the Review & the Video 😀
As a 90's kid, these Stephen King shows were "Must see TV" when they aired. All of them, everybody used to talk about it "Did you see that new Stephen King?"
Yep, it was like "an event" while I was growing up!
Some of my favorite memories are getting together with either my cousin or beat friend and watching this, "It", "The Langoliers" (even tho as a kid I knew it was horribly done 🤦🏻♂️), "The Tommyknockers", etc.
I hate to sound like the cliché "old" person when I say this, but man I miss the days when we had appointment television 😔
God I love Colm Feore’s performance in SOTC. Andre Linoge is a King villain I’d really like to see/read about again.
He was great as The Dollmaker in *Gotham* ... wonderful actor.
Looks and acts like Hannibal Lecter
King reused Andre Linoge in the terrible terrible book Sleeping Beauties.
Although he made it a female antagonist it was basically the same character as Linoge.
They made a mention about "The Big Blow" just last week, assuming, of course, they are talking about San Fran. It sounded like the sequel/ending of these characters journey, and I would love to see it. I doubt we'll get it, but I would have loved to see it. The storm of the Century is one of my favorite mini-series events.
I always was of the mind that, at the end, Linoge was not trying to punish Mike Anderson. I think he was trying to reward him for being so upright and moral. He was giving him a last glimpse to let him know that Ralphie was alive, and would be for a very long time. It's very clear in their interactions that Linoge clearly respects Mike. He tells him his big secret (he cheated in college to pass a class...that's really nothing compared to the secrets of the rest of the town), and unlike the others, Mike eventually owns up to it in public. He fails the first time with just the two of them by saying Linoge is wrong, but when it matters, he tells everyone that their sins are nothing compared to giving the creature what he wants.
And as for the heartbreak he causes him at the end, Ralphie showing what has happened to him probably deadens it a little...his little boy is something else now. And it's been so long since Linoge was human, I think he's just assuming that Mike will take his "gift" at face value to him: There. Your boy is alive, safe and powerful. Let your mind be at ease, constable, the one truly moral person from Little Tall Island.
It feels malicious to us, but to Linoge, it's a kindness. Maybe now Mike can really finally begin to heal. Everyone else on the island that has survived at that point has in some fashion, with Molly having elected to lie to herself until it's her truth. Now, maybe with the closure, his wounds can finally begin to scab over.
How is knowing that your son is turning into an evil demon like Linoge a gift?
Storm Of The Century is my favorite Stephen King story. I've watched it 6 times so far. More than any of his other stories.
Just watched for the first time last month out of the blue. I can definitely see the rewatchability!
Concur!
Give me what I want and I’ll go away....
My FAVORITE as well and then The Stand!
Same! Definitely one of my favorites!
It's been a while since I saw this miniseries, but I do remember liking it a lot! One thing that struck me was that Linoge was not a straight dealer. The boy had a "fairy saddle" birthmark on this nose, and I got the impression he had magical potential. Linoge always wanted that one child and manipulated everyone else in the rigged game in order to get this outcome.
I loved his reference to Atlantis sinking into the African Ocean; that was a great little twist that I don't think anyone in Western culture would have expected.
Yes! He always wanted Ralphie
Steven King's TV adaptations are hit or miss, but this is a special gem. It's right up there with Salem's Lot and It.
Certainly, one of King's best works in this medium. It hits differently after you become a parent.
I just recently watched this with my wife and it's way better than I remember. I agree with the assessment that it's the best of the King Miniseries era. The moment you showed when he was asked why he's in handcuffs, "Because I choose to be," chilled me and my wife. Really loved this miniseries and I'm really happy to see that there are still eyes on it.
He was in control the whole time😬
I may be the world's biggest fan of this miniseries. I watch it a few times a year, including at least once every February. I have a couple of fan theories about it, one of which I asked Stephen King back when he was on Facebook (he didn't answer). Andre Linoge is one of the most powerful villains in fiction, and as you said, all the more intimidating for how slow, deliberate, and controlled he is. I thought this video was fantastic. I've never heard anyone else express this much appreciation for SotC except myself.
Even today I still catch myself saying "tell the truth and shame the devil"
The only thing I disagree with is the statement that Linoge could have killed everyone on the island. The miniseries goes to great lengths to show that he is powerful, but not all-powerful. That's why Mike was so important. He was the only truly "good" person on the island unafraid and always willing to stick to his morals. The rest of the town was so frightened of Linoge they happily gave into his demands and believed his every word.
Not to mention frightened that he will expose all of their secrets to the outside world.
And he I not one to make idle threats.
It makes you think of the choice hard. After having kids, I can only side with Mike. There's no way I could have left it up to chance. The story is all about the choices we make and the outcome. Great for a miniseries.
I couldn’t imagine giving up my daughter either. In the scene where the girl kills her boyfriend, it does show that someone like Mike could fight off Linoge’s influence, and the whole town could if they were strong enough. The problem is he was able to convince them all early on that he was capable of doing everything he said he could, and their moral weaknesses made it easy to influence them.
@@johnepants this, that’s the interesting thing, we really only actually see just enough to create the impression he was actually powerful enough to make that mass genocide dream a reality or why He couldn’t just take what he wanted if he was that powerful, any slow game remains part of the speculation, and some believe it’s implied he knew all along which kid he was after anyway hense Ralph being the only one who gets ever singled out by him.
And it’s true that it’s lampshaded in the diologue when he discards the cheating boyfriend guy, that his mind control influence had certain limits, indeed no one remotely like Mike is ever seen being mentally controlled by him in terms of strength of character and will power.
The only thing that ever seemed to get to him was anyone he didn’t have enough on so he keeps Mike and Hal at a more discreet distance. 🤔
I especially hated that the one person who fiercely objected and voted against, was forced by the conformists to be the one who pays the price. They should have selected from their own children only.
Mike was RIGHT, you must resist evil at all cost! The town represents mankind, Mike represents the Spirit in Mankind, the goodness that makes the body whole.
Exactly common theme in his stories that deal with these entities is banding together to overcome them. Like with pennywise and they only had 6 people. I think the collective will of the town would have been harder to overcome. andre even stated he was sick.
I barely remembered this minor masterpiece... A memento of a "simpler" time (everything's relative) before social media and the attention deficit world we live. To those that have mentioned it, I agree 100%: these miniseries truly were Events one planned for and patiently counted down the time until the next episode. Bravo to the JoBlo Horror channel for revisiting it and reviving it in memory so we can share it with the next generation. Many thanks!!
“Give me what I want and I’ll go away.” Still freaks me out to this day.
Love the fact I found this via King's own Twitter
This is definitely my favourite. Had me captivated from start to finish
Stephen king gave this video a shout out, you have peaked
Wow, really? Thanks for the heads up
This was favorite 90s mini-series. Even surpasses The Stand.
What makes Linoge one of the most truly chilling of all King characters is his knowledge of the evil and corruption in every person. He _knows_ that enough of us are hateful, petty or just plain weak willed enough to out-vote any decent people, who might protest giving Linoge what he wants.
Absolutely love this movie. I born and raised in Maine, and recently moved back. It's currently snowing. Think I'll take a Christmas movie break and pop this in!
Easily in my top 3 of Stephen King movies. I even have it on DVD.
Love this one. I always enjoy the small town setting from King as well as the atmosphere in them and Colm's performance in this is so callous that it becomes one of the most intriguing things about the movie to watch. As the viewer you become very invested in what he wants so much so that it keeps you watching to see just what the hell it is. I remember seeing this one back when it came on and I knew nothing about it beforehand so it was such a pleasant surprise. I wish we still got stuff like this. Nowadays most people are so obsessed with runtime instead of just sitting back and getting lost in a story and it's characters. But at least we can always go back to enjoy movies like this. Great video as always, Lance!
Obsessed with runtime? With extremely similar limited series like Midnight Mass being certifiable hits? 🤔
Yes! Absolute favourite 😁👍👍 Love the over the top Maine accents, how the characters always refer to each other with their full names and the bleak island setting that creates a feeling of dread. "Hell is repetition Robbie" so grim! So Stephen King! Thanks for acknowledging this classic 😁👍👍
God, the actor who played Robbie had such huge nostrils, lol.
Great miniseries and the ending was sad the sheriff son got taken away
THE BEST narrator at JoBlo
He sounds a lot like ex teacher turned wrestler turned commentator/host…Matt Striker 😆
Stephen King brought me here! I agree it's one of his best miniseries!
👏👏I watch "Storm of the Century" at Least once every winter - preferably during a snow storm.😉🖤
That's awesome, *Stephen King* himself posted your video on his official twitter account! Keep up the good work!
Awesome, thank you!
Re-watched this a couple of months ago as it was casually mentioned in another JoBlo video. i did watch when it aired and remembered really liking it. This time I watched it in one sitting. After watching I went on a mini Stephen King TV movie bint of stuff I hadn't seen or didn't remember. Storm of the Century was the best (not including the IT TV adaption). The 4+ hours flew by. Deserves a blu-ray release!
Sure I read somewhere that the *SPOILER* town should have not conceded because Linoge was no longer as powerful as he was and he wouldn't have been able to take on the entire town at once. Still powerful but using the fear of the town against them with smaller demonstrations of his power.
Along with The Stand(90's)SOTC is my favorite on screen work of SK! Thanks for covering it! Inevitably new people will see this because of that very reason!
Couldn't agree more!
@@JoBloHorrorOriginals Just my personal opinion, but I swear I think I can write a script way better than the latest version of The Stand. It had no soul "cafeteria mashed potatoes" as SK once said. It's been my favorite book for about 12 years. I've read it too many times probably 15-20. I have all the loose comics, and the big hardcover graphic comic in the bio-hazard slip case. They did an amazing job! I have 11 different version of the book, old Fangorias about it, all kinds of stuff! I loaned out 4 copies during the lock down. People know I have every SK book, I'll never get them back, but it's ok. My goal is to read them all! Anyone who ever sees this, read The Stand, if you can find the time. The uncut version for the whole experience. Sorry for the long-ish comment, but this really is one of my favorite channels! Love the diversity in taste and presentation! I hope the channel keeps blowing up!
Those 2 are my favorites too! Storm of The Century first!
I watched this live and I never forgot "give me what I want, and I'll go away" and just what that eventually meant.
It wasn't until The Mist that another Steven King adaptation ending burrowed so deeply into me
Sk adaptations are really a hit or a miss but I've fond memories about SOTC (really need to rewatch) and I also love The Stand, IT and (even) The Shining
This series scared me so much as a kid and now I love it!
I remember seeing this advertised like a blizzard on ABC. Very chilling miniseries.
Where I lived we were having cold weather and snow when this aired in Feb of 1999. We couldn't wait for the next night's episode and I swear it was like it was so cold in my house. Like I could never get warm! My husband and I watched it again last night and it was just as good as it was watching the first time! Stephen King knows how to incorporate the Bible in his stories! Michael Anderson was the only one who saw what making a choice would mean in the long term! I hated his wife for agreeing! I was on the side of Michael. One GREAT miniseries! A gem! I would recommend it to ANYONE!
This was an awesome miniseries, I miss the miniseries format, I rewatch this every couple of years.
Ahh man I used to get so excited for his mini series, rose red and storm were my favorite. You can find them for free on UA-cam now it’s great.
Amazing how many people have not seen this one!! It's my favorite King story by a lot!!
The,final monolog in this great series, was, epic in its truth! It's a pay as you go world. Sometimes you pay a little. Sometimes you pay everything you got... Tim Daley's best work ! A masterclass.
I know this sounds goofy, but this was beautifully written and delivered. Writer and narrator take a bow
The ending to this miniseries had me thinking over and over in my mind days after it just hits u hard
P.s the theme to the miniseries just gives you the chills I love it
I have such fond memories of this mini series! I bought it back when it was just on DVD, me and one of my best friends used to watch it all the time during a sleepover when we were kids. We would try and watch the entire thing because if you make it through to the end, it’s basically morning by the time the film was over. It truly is a great story, and even though some of the CGI effects are a bit dated, a lot of cinematography and acting hold up really well.
I just found this gem a few years ago, although Tim Curry's pennywise might be my fave on as many series. Storm of the century is a story to be reckoned with glad someone finally brought it up
I bought the screenplay they released along with it. Seriously, so damn good.
I looked it up once to see if there was any transcript of the chanting. As you probably know, though, it's just marked in the script as "Chanting."
I so fell in love with Colm Feore after this. Especially in Chicago!
Same. I laughed when he played a clip of Feore pronouncing his own name so he wouldn't have to deal with criticism about saying it wrong.
Storm of the Century had a been there done that vibe to it. It is pure King… all the tropes were there… the endless repetition of a catchphrase, a town where everybody constantly refer to each other by both their first AND last names, massive hallucinations, skeletons in the closets being revealed. It is Salem’s Lot rewritten.
The cop was the only he was scared of because he was the only one who stood up to him too bad they never did a sequel where mike comes back to the island but this time it's his son who is the villain he has to take on
Definitely needed a sequel of a more desperate Mike just trying to chase him down across the 🌎 it’s such a bitter sweet epilogue 🤔
Colm Feore and his character really stole the show in this series. He is a very calculating antagonist. It always seems as though he's the one in control in every situation he finds himself in. I also love how it isn't explicitly said what Andre Linoge is suppose to be. I've heard theories ranging from him being a powerful warlock to the physical embodiment of evil and many more. This is what great story telling looks like.
Glad ya did this video. Seen it twice since it came out on Hulu. Hadn’t seen it since a kid during original air
I’ve always loved Storm of the Century! I even remember the previews before it aired 😂 I’m glad it’s finally getting some love! And I truly think if Stephen King wrote this as a book it would easily be one of his greatest.
This is my absolute favorite mini series from Stephen king... probably because I usually read the books before seeing the movie or mini series.... no room to be disappointed by someone's interpretation of kings books 💜
Followed by Dolores Claiborne & the 1st stand mini series
This is far and away one of King's greatest stories. It's a shame he never turned it into a novel.
King himself sent me here (I follow him on Twitter). Said yours was “an interesting take” :)
Storm of the century is awesome
This is a great mini series, I remember watching when it was released in England. Gonna have to re watch 😊🐾💜
Storm of the Century is one my favorite pieces of Stephen King media.
Agreed
I taped it on my VCR when it was originally on tv and then put it on a DVD to enjoy forever.
I was 14 when this came out and I still remember what a big deal it was how many commercials for it there was. I remember being bored with it and unconnected but i was young and preferred the blood and guts of a slasher. I wanna go back now as a kid thirties adult and give it a new chance
I saw the fangs glaring as impatient anger. Loved it.
It's a bluff. It was always a bluff. Linoge is at the end of his powers and is very soon about to die. Perhaps 50 years to us. He chooses Little Tall Island because the horrible people there all have so much to lose and everything to keep secret. He also knows that they will turn on each other before they would band together and try to actually fight him. If they were to put their differences aside they would have defeated him. However his powerfully illusions of Roanoke and the flying children being dropped from the heavens was just the provocation the people needed to see it through. His last line in the show is a giveaway.
"Maybe you tricked yourselves."
You got it, ding ding ding ding. I always saw it as a big bluff.
It took me several watches to get it, but did you notice that Kat's boyfriend (can't remember his name) _resists_ when Linoge tries to make him bash Kat's brains in? And Linoge FREAKS, rushing to force Kat to kill the boyfriend. If the boyfriend had survived to talk about what had happened, it would have completely ruined Lionge's "long game." The people in the town would have realized they could resist him.
He knew the only one who he was worry about was mike because he was the only one with heart and soul if they listen to Mike and stood up to him he would have left
It blew me away when I found out town manager Robbie, and Dale from TWD were played by the same person! They're like completely different people.
Thank you for highlighting this one. I have difficulty deciding between this and the original It as the best of those King adaptations at that time. As for André Linoge, I have always seen him as a form of vampire. He didn't suck your blood but instead drained your will. Like vampires who could not invade your home - they had to be invited - you had to give Linoge what he wanted freely and by your own choice. He couldn't just take. You had to sign that contract willingly, as it were. And of course, he had his own methods of coercion, not in seduction but in exposure which fits the motif of the winter storm. Overexposure kills in the form of frostbite, and amoral overexposure becomes this particular vampire's form of bite.
It would be epicly stellar asf if you reviewed the 1989 underrated hidden gem thriller (Hider In the house) starring Gary Busey, Mimi Rogers, and Michael McKean. Imo films like this are psychology scary ASF and not enough of them just a request. Since barely anyone reviews that film!
Aside from The Shining, this is my favorite Syephen King film adaption. So well done with a great cast.
You just like it cause there were no blacks up in it. Cause you a races.
I’m glad this miniseries hasn’t been forgotten. Its easily one of King’s best adaptations
It isn't an adaptation. It's a TV original.
Banger 😎👍
I love this mini-series so much. I'm still waiting for an audiobook of the novelization to listen to on long drives. What an absolutely fantastic story, and Colm Feore is absolutely a fantastic villain.
Please do a video on Rose Red and the Diary of Ellen Rimbauer. These two movies including SOTC were my favs from the late 90s/early 2000s
My memory is shot. I've seen this like 4 or 5 times already but can't remember the name when I am trying to watch it now, I google'd "born in sin, come on in" cause that's all I could remember😅. Glad I found it.
So true that King's 90's mini-series were household events, I'll have to find this on Bluray at some point.
Stephen King's commentary is great.
IT and THE STAND are far superior to SOTC
@@titusmccarthy truthfully I like em all, even The Langoliers.
@@titusmccarthy I might agree if the endings weren't so hollow. SOTC has the best ending of any Stephen King story I know. For me, that puts it over those other two in a close race.
I see the ending as a condemnation of democracy. That what's morally right isn't dependent upon a majority's vote. The choice you see as morally best depends on if you view the dilemma from a materialist or spiritual perspective... They should have stood up for what's truly right in the sight of God. Hence why the show implies the Roanoke Island folk disappeared, for this reason. People were more rooted morally in the past because they were more rooted in God, they made the right choice spiritually and morally by perishing righteously with their souls in tact. My views are not popular these days but I believe them to be true... Great show currently on Hulu.
Just finished watching it again it's the best miniseries I've ever watched I've watched it about twenty times know.
Just watched this recently again. Loved it when I was a teenager. And by God I loved it! This should be way more known. Superb show!
This was one of the best King Miniseries, it's true. My favorite is still The Stand, though that might be because it's also my favorite book by Stephan King. And I'm talking about the the 90's one, of course.
Hell is repetition. Very true, Mr Linoge.
Lance Vleck is my favorite Jo Blo horror guy. He always writes from the heart and you can hear it in his narration as well. His videos seem less clinical than the other jo blo vids. This one is awesome, I watched this with my parents when I was little and it left a deep impression on me. I haven’t seen it in 20 years or more but I still remembered most of the shots in this video.
Thank you for this. It means a lot.
@@JoBloHorrorOriginals What that movie where that woman was "graped" by a ghost??
@@NestIeCrunch the entity
@@grahamcarroll30 Yeah!!!! Freaky movie
I've watched this movie probably 300x, I bought the screen play.... No one really mentions it much... I'm blown away this thing got 15000 views in 5 days lol
The soundtrack is so underrated.
what a good essay for a very good Stephen King film adaptation. Ty ^^
Yes. It is an incredible series. I´d say this one, It and The Stand are the best series.
I bought it for $1 on dvd at Walmart. I put it on as “background noise”, and I ended up watching the entire film and getting nothing done 😂
LOVE THIS SERIES!!!!
Bold statement my friend. It's one of his best, but the original mini series of the stand in my humble opinion is better.
His best made for TV show. Though after years of owning and watching I do think it could have been edited tighter. I think you could condense it into a 2 hour movie and have possibly one of the best Stephen King horror movies, maybe second to The Mist.
I forgot about the ending when he sees his son
Such a gem❤❤❤
Stephen King watched your video!
I'll have to give this a re-watch. I watched it when it came out and felt let down by it. I don't think it would've been as memorable if it weren't for the awesome Colm Feore's killer performance. The main issue for me is that it trod similar King country. It's similar to Needful Things, The Mist and (to a lesser degree) Salem's Lot. Linoge is a similar character to Leland Gault and Straker and Randall Flagg.
I’m t is possible that they are all the same person, or all LEGION. Randall Flag already appears in two different universes within Kings Stories, so it’s not too much of a stretch to think that he is either the same character or part of a group of dark men who travel the world and cause chaos.
@@johnepants Potentially, yes, but I don't think the continuity is there...except for Leland Gault and Linoge. I think King has a lot of archetypes in his stories that crop up again and again--eg: hypocrite priest, the town bully, etc.
I remember this the stand was great the original mini series I kinda remember rose red gotta see tht one again tommyknockers is good too
This story makes you ask one thing. The devil comes to town and wants one child, your child. What do you do?
This completely messed me up as a kid. I can’t stand to watch things with Colm Feore in them to this day.
I still think 90's The Stand is the best in my book, but this was pretty damn close. Langoliers too, sure it's not aged well but I still love it.
This is one of those movies that I can not rewatch. It is just too upsetting.
I agree that Linoge is indifferent to the lives of humans however I think that ending scene where he comes back only to rub it in the constables face shows he’s at least vindictive. Unless it was merely a test to see if Ralphie would stay loyal after seeing his father.
He reminds me of Hannibal or the acting is similar to Anthony Hopkins!great miniseries feels like needful things definitely a castlerock thing
I legit watch this too fall asleep
Great video. Do Rose Red next.
Though I love Storm of the Century. I can recall reading one of King's short stories, where "The Reach" was mentioned as this bizarre, fantastical and possibly evil place. Does anyone else know the name of this specific King novella?
Always thought his name was a deliberate misspelling of Le Neige or The Snow. So Andre Le neige is Man of the Snow
