Before we moved up to Tennessee my daughter and I lived in South Florida. The last five years before we moved, we did no use the heater or the AC. In the summer I mounted a box fan in the entrance to the attic. We kept it on low and blew air from the house up into the attic; the attic stays cool, the house stays cool.
We had 6 fire brick on the bottom shelf of the oven. They help to distribute the heat more evenly so the food cooked evenly; we were able to turn the oven off sooner. The heat from the brick kept the food cooking. In the winter about ½ hour, before we went to bed, we turned the oven on to warm-up. When the oven had warmed up, we turned it off and then we took the brick, wrapped each in a hand towel and set them in the bed: one for the head, one for the seat, and one for the feet. There is nothing better than a warm bed in the winter.
We put an on-off valve at the showerhead. Set the temperature you want and wet down. Use the valve at the head to turn the water off. Soap down and wash your hair, then turn the water back on and rinse off. By the way, if you cut your shampoo by ½ with water it will rinse out quicker; you use less hot water. You can put it in a squirt bottle and only squirt as you need it. You can cut your dish soap and it will go farther too.
We had saved over $25,000 when we made the move. We bought 15 acres from a bank that had recently repossessed it. Being a “Natural Born Cheapskate” can come in handy.

In my experience you have got the class is top 5 there. My grocery bill is about 30 a week, including coffee and chocolate. Eating out is never as good as what I can have at home for a couple of dollars. Our community shares the costs of animal feed, phone,Internet, snow removal (cause that is a big thing here) farm maintence, crops etc. All of these things cost me on average 200 per month. We also order dry goods in bulk from a wholesaler, which fills our food gaps. In a small community like ours, there is always someone going to town, or the city (a 2hr drive) so we tell everyone else when we do, so that errands and purchases can be done in 1 trip. These are just good habits, that save a lot of money, as well as reducing our footprint. Good for you !

You gave up the Harley but you bought a nice little tractor. I'd love one of those..and a truck. Plus you are debt free and self employed which makes you owned by no one.

Alot of the modern conviences keep people antisocial. When we lived in the country away from movie theaters and shopping malls there was alot more porch sitting with neighbors, bonfire get togethers, that sort of thing.

@@LivingTraditionsHomestead I live in a rural community. One of the activities that I like is to bottle dig. Whether it be on my own property or along the river or my mom's property. My teenage grandchildren made fun of me until one day when the cell tower was out. When they found their first collectible brown glass Clorox bottle, they got excited. There is a little money to be made with old bottles too. Even tho I don't sell mine. Now they try to find the time to go with me when I go. Collections are a great hobby to cultivate in children. Their are valuable lessons to be learned from collecting old memorabilia. They also can be lucrative and lead to a lifetime career in any number of fields. Metal detecting is also a great hobby. It does take a little investment for equipment and there is a bit of learning curve and practice to be done tho. But the payback in rich historical knowledge is tremendous even if you don't find the giant buried treasure chest. Missouri is one of the richest states with buried historical treasure, I think. I love finding antique marbles too. Where there are glass bottles to be found, there will be marbles. I don't know why. Where ever there was an old house, there are old trash pits and outhouses. I never knew that people threw their glass bottles down the outhouse back in the day. And I'm old enuff to have lived where there was one.

Gifts were a big change for us! We make gifts and we taught the kids that Jesus got three gifts for his birthday and so Christmas gifts for each family member was limited to three also! One practical, one fun ,and one the build memories! We taught them that homemade gifts are gifts from the heart and are the most treasured!
We also shop at thrift stores...an item is only new till the first time you use it ,then it’s used...not worth the extra to be the first one to get to use an item!

Even here in South Africa, we have DSTV (digital sat) with all the popular global and local channels, repeats everywhere, same old same old, and all for more than R1000/month, which is about the value of a new modern microwave oven. Not great, even netflix with all their multicultural stuff i cant view or understand is becoming a waste. Cancelled all of it. The best movie = sitting outside watching a thunderstorm over the Karoo

I gave up cable TV in 2005. Have not missed it in 15 years. Junk food has been being reduced slowly for a couple years. Going out to eat is being reduced. Only one vehicle, got to have that. I already have a full entertainment center. DVD player, Video player, even lazer player with about 400-500 DVDs and Videos. And this is just to survive. I want to get into the gardening aspect to reduce the food cost and eat healthier but so far it is going slowly, finances do not allow a fast turnover. But I so enjoy your videos, they really help me realize what I can and cannot do at my age. Thank you so much! Love you guys!!

Since moving in with my best male friend, I have come to realize that I do not need cable to survive. It also helps that he only has the cheapest most basic package available and relies on the ‘free channels’ that come on each month.
I didn’t have cable or satellite growing up, just a little black and white tv that also doubled as a computer monitor back then.
I have pretty much decided that the only thing I will use my tv for is to watch DVDs and maybe play the few video games I have…lol. I also get iTune cards whenever my budget can afford it, so get my favourite tv seasons and music for my iPod from there…

Your farm truck is newer than my hubby's daily driver. We always save and do our best to save up for big purchases, and our vehicles we always pay cash for and own without payments. Another thing is we have no house phone. My husband and I have a cell phone each, and it costs about the same as having a home phone. The benefits of having a cell phone outweigh a land line because we get internet access and it's portable. We frequent parks and other free things. On our side of Missouri, we have Elephant Rocks State Park, and Sam A. Baker Park, and we also go to the St. Louis Zoo. We do buy a family pass but that allows us to see shows, ride the train and the carousel, and park in the guarded parking lot multiple times and our family can go to the Zoo about 3 times using the family pass.
I advise people to take advantage of free activities in their area.

Great to watch thanks. Junk food, fast food, processed food, phone/tv, 2nd/3rd vehicles, boats/toys with plates, insurance, etc you hit them all.
In the end, it isn't about how much money you earn as how much you spend. There are folks living on 30k a year who manage to save as much as those making 10x.

Hello, I have really enjoyed watching your videos. It makes me long for my life back home even more.
I am basically a country girl living in the city, having moved here for work years ago.
I lasted a year without a garden before I started to get antsy and needed to do something about the urge to get my hands dirty…lol.
Thankfully, I found a community garden club which I quickly joined and have been happily satisfying my green thumb in my little plot there.
It’s not permanent but does the job and keeps me sane in the city, but eventually I will be moving back home to the country to look after my parents who still live in the family home….
We have one acre of land but unfortunately the back half of it is wetland/swamp, so can’t really do a lot there. On the land we can do stuff with, dad has several small orchards scattered around and an old run down green house that is holding together by a hope and a prayer…

A lot of people, not just homesteaders have given up cable TV. It's just ridiculously expensive everywhere. Now that I am not working any longer i save bundles of money on groceries. No longer buy any convenience foods or junk foods. I have the time to cook and bake and we are much healthier and I honestly enjoy cooking more! Our entertainment is basically finding what we need at yard sales and thrift shops and going to the fair once a year. We go to community events. We cut out eating out except for maybe 2 to 3 times a month and it's usually Chipolte which we end up getting two meals out of one serving it's so much! We are at retirement now and must watch our pennies. We are down to one vehicle now. We dont miss anything. We enjoy the simple things in life at a much slower pace and are quite happy.

My grand parents lived through the depression, and the tales I grew up with from them still makes me wonder how they made it. When I decided to retire a few years early, I too looked at a few ways to cut bills. For one I cook our meals, that saves a bundle, I renegotiated our electric contract, found MUCH cheaper car insurance, but I too paid off everything and got all new appliances for the house to save on repairs, that took a couple years. We cut up all credit cards, and I pack my husbands lunch every day, that saves a bundle too. Now even on Social Security and one job, we still bank savings every month. Its all in your mind, and you both are so lucky to have a real good couple of girls there, they don't look like they would die if they didn't have a new outfit every week. You are making a blessed family.

I agree with the TV thing we do the antenna too. Costs are crazy. As far as the food category when my husband had his heart attack the Dr said when you shop in the store you need to shop the outside walls. Meat, dairy, veggies. Do not shop the interior aisle it’s all chemicals and junk pre made unhealthy things. When this was said in that way it made a lot of sense . Eating out is crazy too. When you think what you can buy with $30’s we can eat steak 2-3 times for that.

We are all adults and have all we need. We haven't been to a movie in over 10 years. We have a huge DVD collection we watch. We buy in bulk . We quit trash pickup which was $80 a month for 1 can . I'm loving this journey to becoming a traditionalists!! I have learned since I retired from the 32+ years at the job, that cable or pay for tv transmission is a HUGE monthly financial draw! The fixed income factor has really slapped me into financial reality, hence I have spent almost a year on this YT journey to Homestead Independence! My wife is younger than I and continues to work fulltime, with a 2yr.+ goal to also retire. We are subscribers to several YT channels and and love the diversification that each one brings! Please continue to have these 'around cast iron cookware' talks we love them!
We will not give up the Harleys, they are paid for, they are newer, and insurance and upkeep is and will be manageable. Being 'in the wind' is our prozac and I know you know what I'm talking about! I suggest you put some 'egg money' together and go rent a couple for a weekend or so and 'get you some', you both are still young, beautiful and healthy. The Pastors of our Church both love to ride and there are several members that are riders also. Very short riding season but worth it!
We live far northeast of you guys and have a much shorter growing season, it is snowing right now lightly and since the early AM has accumulated about 5+" and will probably make it to 7-8" by noon EST, it's almost 9:30 EST., and temp. is about 28 deg.F....pretty common New England winter day.

We gave up cable long before we started urban homesteading. And we limit our eating out but we have to revise that again because it’s getting even more expensive now that our 4 children are eating more. Another thing we gave up are things we can make instead of buy like toothpaste, laundry detergent and household cleaning items. Much much cheaper. Great video btw

Many people are addicted to those things, or ruled by them.... when you give those things up, you attain true freedom. The main thing: being led by God! That's it. Congratulations!

I can't give up satellite for my household but that is because I have a little sister with C.P.. She love food network, cooking channel, diy and history channel. It is her main source of entertainment for while I work around the home.

I'm trying to figure out how to live on less money. Trying to save up, after raising my kids.
I was abandoned with two kids 15 years ago. No child support, and no food stamps. I was just too stinkin' independent, I guess.
I've never had cable TV... Grew up strict Mennonite, without even a radio, so a good book is good entertainment. Church is my favorite activity.
Groceries... I live alone, so it's hard to figure out how to cook for one. A pot of soup lasts a good while.
Eating out... it's so wasteful! The money spent on a very low-quality fast food meal would buy a good steak at the grocery store!
Vehicles... Mine's an eyesore, but it's paid for! Paid cash for a second-hand reliable little Toyota. Dented and dinged, but she runs fine!
Clothes... I prefer to make mine. It's my comfort zone.
I'd give almost anything to be able to homestead! But how does a single, 55-yr-old woman get started, with no money?
I know how to care for animals. I was raised that way. I milked a cow by hand for years. Have had a flock of chickens most of my life. But where I'm renting, I'm not even allowed to have a cat.
Could I support myself from a small piece of land? How can I get a place of my own?
When my mother was my age, she had a 500-layer flock, and an egg delivery route... plus a bakery in the back yard which evolved from 2 loaves of bread she baked and sent to market once with Papa. That bakery grew until we baked over 600 lbs of bread a week, and about 700 pies (8 kinds), plus all kinds of other baked goods... I could do that. But I know how much backbreaking work that takes! ...And I do make killer doughnuts. :)
At my age, my mom also had a household of about 22 altogether. That was 9 kids of her own, plus enough foster care children to make up the difference.
I miss kids. I need to marry a widower, I think. A widower with motherless kids, and a homestead. That would be heaven on earth for me.

Getting to know Homesteaders you might like to Homestead-sit for them if they go on holidays or offer yourself as a Homestead Help. Some homesteads have cabins so you could have rent and a small payment for your daily help with light chores with the farm. Can you make something that a market stallholder can sell on your behalf? Blessings

Where I live, people get a food handler's card from the state or county and sell baked goods, tamales, burritos, pierogies and such from home. They post on Facebook and take orders for the next day for specific pick up times. I bet you would make a killing during the holidays. I know one lady who trades her homemade jam with vendors at the farmer's market every week. She barters the equivalent of $7 a pint for produce, jewelry, etc. You could probably make small sellable items with scraps from your clothing and see if they can be sold or bartered at the market or on Etsy. I bet you could get some cash flow going with your skills!

I gave up tv years and years ago. I purchased a small indoor antenna for less than $50 and I get between 20 to 40 channels depending on the weather. I do live nearer a large city so that helps and I'm not in the Ozarks. I think it's wonderful that you've shared so much of your life and lifestyle with us. Thanks for being a positive influence! God bless.

I'm not a homesteader. I'm an urban senior living on social security. I have a 30 year old car that I only use for doctor's appointments and food shopping. I try to grow food on my balcony but it is too shady for most food. I gave up carbohydrates because of diabetes and I can't afford movies. However my apartment manager supplies basic cable so I have that. My daughter subscribes to Netflix but I find that reading is more my style. And my daughter bought me canvases and paints. So now I can do that for fun. I cook a lot but less now that I can't bake bread, or make cakes, cookies and pies. I live a lot like you do without the natural beauty.

If you guys still get notified of comments ..... in Missouri, can you make a tag that says "Farm" or "Farm Use" and not have to buy plates every year?
Some states you can do this and still drive the truck to the feed mill or pick up supplies.

We haven't bought a UK TV licence since we got married. There was nothing ever on TV so it just wasn't worth it. I used streaming channels online and DVDs. We hooked the TV up to the computer.
We don't really buy junk food. Maybe now and again for a treat.
We go out for meals buy it's usually two meals for £10.
We have only ever had enough money for one vehicle.
My husband loves his board games and it's great to hang out with people. A lot of the time we buy full board games at charity shops.
We have installed a handheld bidet to save on toilet paper but I think cloth would be better to dry off instead as paper get soggy. I have a lot of material so I will make some cloth wipes to dry off. Also feels SO much cleaner. We got a brand new bidet, still sealed, in a charity shop for £6. The toilet paper we buy costs £8 for a pack of 24 and since installing the bidet we have used a quarter of the amount of toilet paper that we would usually use, if that.

Wow, I just found this old videos about how you started homesteading, you are amazing... just to hear that you started in your backyard and made it all the way where you are now is very inspiring. It gives me hope that I can make it too one day. I am currently living in big city with small front yard garden and small backyard, growing a lot 8n pots and just started with rabbits.. trying to figure out what we can actually do in the city. Love your new videos about quails and thinking if it would be possible to raise them in our shed. Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪

Mine has been 150 just for basic crazy!!!I can't wait to not have to rely on grocery stores, cause we all see how that went when things got crazy I would love losing some weight as well...going out to eat is overrated, and ya realize just so not healthy and me an hubby 100 for steak dinner, no more!!, I realized last night , I could have bought garden cloth for the garden , so we have it when we get moved..Ill give up now to have better when we get there.. My hubby won't give up his Harley, but it doesn't run his life.. I am happy playing board games , puzzles, I'd rather spend money on homestead equipment!! I even notice when I was just up there , they live an half hour outta small town hour to bigger town ,not Springfield, they got sick of driving real quick..

It would be worth checking out your local library for DVD, VHS, and movie streaming services. Even if you’re only paying 50 cents at the thrift store, free is always better! Some libraries even offer board games and other free activities for families to enjoy. (Of course this is coming from an ex-librarian that still loves her library!)

Was glad to see we we're on the right track. We've lived in the country for 20 yrs and honestly many of these things we already do. Except going out once a month. We go out rarely , though we've done a pizza day once a month to support our local pizza place. We have dropped cable a while ago and got a Roku. We aren't able to get local channels and aren't able to use an antenna because we live in a valley and TV signals go right over us , people here have to use very large antennas. We only own one vehicle. The only thing we haven't done and are working on is getting less from the grocery store and growing more.
