Thankfully my husband would eat a shoe if it had sauce on it…tonight I got stuck in a budget meeting and got home late. He decided to help by thawing out some sloppy Joe filling I’d made a week or so ago and preparing dinner. Well…it was spaghetti sauce. I learned two important things.
    1) label stuff
    2) spaghetti burgers ain’t bad!

Hubby scored at our little local store yesterday. They had 15 lb bags of potatoes 2/$5. He brought me home 4 bags. 60 lbs of taters for $10. I’ve been washing up canning jars, and making room in the pantry all day 😂

In my area, there is a family owned company that contracts w farmers to grow potatoes in MN & WI. After the fields are harvested, they always leave an area for “gleaning”, as in the biblical practice. Then they have a field day - from sun up to sun down, where anyone can come & dig spuds for FREE!

@@danniemcdonald7675 thank you for caring about others.. he is diabetic and has heart disease (stents & 3 bypass) is in for his heart again. They give him “heart friendly”meals but very high carb and way too much sugar (pancakes, potatoes and lots of bread, canned fruit, reg pudding and the list goes on. I did Ck with his cardio Dr and told him what I cook & how & that I use little to no salt. So we’re good to go.
One extra bonus to canning meats is that it seems that most of the fat cooks out and sits at the top of the jar and is easy to remove.

When it's full, I dump it in the InstantPot with 6 quarts of water and slow cook for 24 hours. Strain and can in pints - free veggie broth! Use it to cook rice, noodles, make gravy or soup, or just sip on its own.

I have just been doing this, this past year. I will sometimes eat leftovers, but other times they got thrown out. Hubs does not really like to eat leftovers, soups/stews. But, I started having 2 bowls in the freezer, one for beef and the other for chicken. Because, I will eat soups/stews and so will our son, that lives with us. I love it, they never taste the same twice. I basically had vegetable stew here recently with just chicken broth in it from canned chicken, didn't realize I didn't have any meat in it, but it was still good.

Make candied orange and grapefruit peels and store them in mason jars. If you vacuum seal the jars, they last a long time, are delicious, and full of vitamins. The thicker the peel the better, navel oranges are the best. If you don’t get organic, make sure to scrub them well and rub them with lemon juice to eliminate any pesticide residue. Save your lemon peels to for lemon zest. Candied orange peels were commonly used during the Victorian era to settle an upset stomach.

So, if I have any getting close or past the best by date, my daughter will take them. I found the coffee on clearance 2 weeks in a row and bought them again. So, we are stocked up for awhile. I usually use a Keurig coffee maker, but I mainly use the coffee replacement filters in it, so I am using my own coffee. I do buy the K-cups every now and then if they are on sale/clearance. I forget the numbers but for that you're getting canned fluid, eat hot or cold, milk =protein, rice = protein, carbs, amino acids, fiber, sugar.. all =energy and its filling, its a comfort food and its canned so lasts a good time. For 25p that's a lot of survival power.

It cracked me up when you said it might get stinky dehydrating onions. Yep, I just did that. Had to get my hubby to stop and get Lysol spray because even though I was smart enough to put the dehydrator on the patio, I cut them in the house. The smell just wouldn't go away. I'm not a fan of onions, but my son loves them. So I do them for him. I'll make some onion powder too.

We already have wood for the woodstove to offset, and I’ve been canning up a storm to avoid having to buy things when the bills are higher. Each month I give myself a goal of something extra to do or learn. It will take time, but every action is a step in preparation and self reliance. Have someone in the family (not in my house, thank god) that just buys food items because there is a sale or its free - I can't begin to tell you the amount of food that is thrown by these people or been consumed and made them sick. Find out if there is a produce or grocery rescue in your area. We have 2 in AZ - they get produce from warehouses or processors that is excess, ugly, maybe over ripe, etc so it doesnt go to the landfill. One of ours is only produce; it varies every week depending on what they've rescued but I get 70 lbs of veggies and fruit for $15. The other is more grocery items, bread, juice, cookies, coffee creamers, smoothies, etc- usually about 4 boxes of stuff for $10. Both are drive thru loaded by volunteers on Saturday mornings. I take coffee and a book to wait in line - about 2 hours and I come home with about 150 lbs of groceries for $25 then can, freeze, and dehydrate all weekend.

*Plan for clearance sales on holiday foods.
Kroger will clearance fresh/non frozen turkeys on Thanksgiving morning. 20-25 pound birds for $5 each. I get several every year. They go into jars and the carcass becomes broth. My dog gets a treat with the raw neck and giblets. If you, or anyone you know, can smoke the turkeys ...omg does that step it up. Smoked turkey broth makes an AWESOME soup base.
Turkey and ham sales right on/after Thanksgiving and Christmas.
    Hams on sale at/after Easter.
Stores want to clear the excess late holiday eve, holiday and day after.
Summer holidays get brisket and other grill meat sales. FYI- trimmed brisket pressure cans to taste like roast beef. If you are trimming it yourself, you've got beef fat to render down. If might not be the uber leaf tallow of a 5 star pastry chef, but it's great for home cooking.
*If you have good impulse control, walk your whole store whenever you can. Many clearance items stay in their regular spots. New packaging, chance of season flavors, shrinkflation making room for the new and improved smaller weight.... Many non essential, but variety adding items can be found greatly reduced in those middle aisles.
*Know where every store's official clearance area is. Maybe you've never noticed because it's next to items you never buy there, like baby or makeup. Find it and check it.

If you have money to 'burn' spend it on better storage! All the bulk buys in the world are useless if it goes bad before you can use it. Don't get it twisted it doesn't need to be fancy just better, an amazon pack of oxygen absorbers and moisture absorbers in the canning jars you probably already have (and you can use used lids for dry storage if it holds) will keep dry goods damn near forever, not just beans and rice but crackers and noodles, treats your family eats etc.... Also look for the extra food in the food you already buy, scrap broth has gotten lots of traction, but you can also use the liquid from canned foods in your bread making, bean liquid can bump the protein in a bread, adjust the salt to compensate, but that liquid is part of the weight you paid for, some people make things from banana a citrus rinds (watch banana rinds if you have a latex allergy) use the left over bits of a roticery chicken to start a soup. I make it my mission to only ever throw out packaging, my SO is working on setting up a foundry so eventually we won't be tossing metal, I use vinegar and water jugs (my cpap only uses distilled) for winter sewing, I run bones through instant pot cycles until they are soft enough to toss in our fast turn compost or can be safely fed to the cats. Sometimes its less buy more and more lose less!

For those new to gardening: If you don’t have a garden, use the winter months to look for a community garden in your area. The great thing about them is that you get “community” along with gardening. Learn from one another. Start a skills sharing seminar series at the garden! In the meantime, learn to sprout in mason jars. You can do this!

I love you videos. This will sound little but I started dehydrating my herbs, garlic, onions & also trying blends. I am a canner & go through a lot of herbs. They can grow in pots & now I have whole bunch of jars. I like the yogurt in little glass jars , cause there is not a lot. I got a whole box of lids off amazon that fit them they became my spice jars instead of buying little containers.

You live in the forest and we live literally in the sticks .
Our town of maybe 1,200 has ventures but, they’re high priced.
One town35 miles is a Walmart and high priced united grocery store that it for grocery stores in that town. Few other stores but nothing exciting.
Next town 55 miles has a united high priced and Walmart . Not much else as far as grocery stores. Few other stores but not exciting.
Our town if you are young is boring. I’m 61 so this town is fine. We’re in the panhandle of Oklahoma far out. So I get it.
But you know something no big shot people bother with us . They’re rapped up in the big cities. If you’re out in a forest no one cares about you.
not talking about family and friends not caring. I’m talking about government and high officials in your state. Pretty much the tiny little towns out in the middle of nowhere are usually left alone when push comes to shove. Same here.
They don’t enforce a lot of things where I live.
I’ve got probably 6 to 12 months worth of food and I’m working on another 6 to 12 months if I can find room for it . Amazing job Lisa let everybody know what’s going on and what they should do.
Love your channel. Keep up the good work.

I remember the AHA moment when I figured out how all the UA-camrs were affording only buying organic. I thought, I wish I could do that, I want my family chemical and gmo free! Well duh! They are smart about preserving their own food, saving money on things they can make themselves, then splurging on what’s important to them. And I’ve been doing it ever since, little by little. Love you smart yt peeps always helping me figure stuff out 💜

I learned years ago it's more than just a "yes/no" on what we'll eat, but also how OFTEN! A year's supply of oats in my family could be a month's for someone else, or the reverse with pasta. So don't overstock an occasional as if it were a frequent staple or you're right back to the problem of wasting food, just like something you won't eat at all.

i just went to a closeout store and scored 2 cases of mandarin oranges for $8.99 each there are 24 cans in each case so I only paid .37 per can. I also participate in the preorder meat sales that my small town grocery store offers. I recently bought 40 pounds of chicken thighs for $35 and 18 pounds of bacon for $45.

When I go shopping for food I am prepared for a day out! It takes me at least 3 hours to get through whatever store I go to, and I go to several that are close. I constantly use my phone to compare the prices of the three major stores we have near us, and will take note of items that are a better deal at these other stores.
I read labels, look for the latest expiration dates, and very closely peruse aisles looking for food items that I wouldn't have thought of that are low priced or on sale
Also, always check clearance first, you never know what bargain you will find!
Another great tip, If an item is on sale and it looks like everything 's gone when you get there, look behind the foods near that item. Many times a can or two of the item gets pushed to the back. I don't know how many times I have scored items that everybody thought was gone, just by looking a little further! 😉👍

I study all the ads and apps for loss-leader sales. Every store will have a special one week of the month on a specific thing like cheese, coffee, chicken, tissues, dish soap, etc. It can seem like a bit of a hit that one day, but I only buy common variety cheeses once a month and spend about $8 total. The week TP is $5 for 12 rolls every six months or so, I buy enough until the next time it's on special. I don't have to buy laundry soap for about two years, lol, but it was only $12 for two of the big containers.

Was blessed with tomatoes from my neighbor & then some peppers, which included 2 jalapeños....you know I canned salsa today!! Husband & I buy reduced meat on sale or reduced when we find it...freeze or can it. Also dehydrate what I can find in the produce section reduced or on sale. That leaves us more money to put towards bigger or bulk purchases

I look for the clearance items at my Walmart. I'm talking canned goods in the regular isles for items that still have a year or more left on the "best by" date! I have gotten huge cans of pinto beans for 25 cents, 32 ounce bottles of hot sauce for $1, brand name jars of pasta sauce for 99 cents, a pound of store brand pasta for 25 cents! Look for it, it's out there! If the shelf is empty, go back in a few days because they probably have more in the back and will restock. Don't just look in groceries. I needed some new sweaters for winter and found $1 sweaters (they were mis-marked as clearance), and I bought several. I have been doing this for years and this is how I grew my pantry!

We only have one grocery store in our town, the other is way overpriced. So, learn when they mark things down, ours is early morning. So, i can often get meat at a discounted price. Know where the clearance places in the store. Got our church a years supply of glue for almost nothing. Got a 60 pod coffee for $5! You have to get smarter. We budgeted so i can buy and build up our pantry. Not using it this year, but next year we will start and will always have food in the house. my husband doesn't like beans as a side but loves when i mix in with the meat. Extends our meal, n i get great leftovers for lunches.

Stockpiling on a budget, after a move, or when rejuvenating what I'm sorting in my larder begins with saving every washable food container that my groceries are coming in. Bread bags can be used for freezing individually wrapped items, loaves of say zuchini and carrot bread, muffins and cookies, items that have been flash frozen on a cookie tray, and even quantities of spaghetti sauce; they are cheaper than a resealable baggie or freezer bag. Water bottles, soda bottles, and juice bottles can be used to store beans, rice, and other things which will roll on thier own out those narrow mouths. It does behoove you to get an inexpensive funnel set from the Now $1.25 Store. You can store finer items like flour and cornmeal in them but oats aren't so great. Definitely save all those single serve cups so you can save money by making your own jello, pudding, or single serving of things like canned fruit with a savings. Ultimately you may want to visit a resaurant supply store for portion cups with lids; while you are likely to have casualties along the way they do hand wash for upto multiple re-uses. Even plastic rectangular containers that some deli meats etc... come in can be used to make jello in, freeze liquid things (stuff frozen contents in outside the container down a bread bag), and even smaller portions of left overs. Once cleaned out, the wider to wide mouthed peanut butter jars of plastic or glass, are great for storing sugars, flours, mixes, spice blends, self made mixes, and even purchased seasoning packets. The list goes on.

    I. S started out by buying Five or six things at a time. I went to garage sales. I went to Goodwill’s things that people were giving me. I ran across a great Dutch oven that was needing some major elbow grease that I was a lot younger than and I did it and I love it. I still have it to this day it is mainly used for peach cobblers around the fire. My kids know that that’s what that that oven is used for this. I have a lot more but that’s what I use it for. I learned how to make peach cobbler from a man out in raccoon Lake, when we were staying out there for the cover bridge festival, my goodness it was the best peach cobbler I have ever had in my life. We had ice cream over it nice and slow nice and high charcoal top charcoal around the bottom away from the dutch oven slow sit around , that’s it. You got that nice Chris crest delicious guys and it’s just your basic basic recipe.

Utilize food pantries. One local one operates on grants and always has fresh foods. Use that kind when possible.
Learn to hunt, fish. Garden and/or forage. Collect cookbooks for how to use the foods and try them now while things are accessible. If you like the recipe, stock the ingredients.

I always check the markdowns. I use the Flashfood app. I use coupon and rebate apps. I use what I get cheap and create meals from there. I may have to buy an ingredient or two, but it's much cheaper than planning a menu and buying stuff whether it's on sale or not. You are so right that if you build a stockpile, you slowly get to the point of only grabbing what's cheap or free. I also just learned to can.
