My dad has been a heavy equipment mechanic for almost 50 years. The guy can literally machine and fabricate a working auto out of thin air. As we were watching this, he turned to me and said "That War Rig is a Czech Tatra. That's *the* baddest ass truck you'll ever find. If you want a truck to get you through the apocalypse, that's the one." Then he nodded in a satisfied way that made me respect this movie even more.
he knew what truck the war rig was just by looking at it and that truck was extensively modified.

Made me realize that the Buzzards truck looks like KAMAZ excavator truck, which would be fitting as it was shown that the Buzzards were Russian.
fun fact: The reason why all the vehicles are so unique is because loads of engineers were individually asked to design what they think a post apocalyptic car would look like and thats what they came up with
And they all have unique names too!

The movie is a masterpiece.... the fact that you're watching 2 hours of non-stop action and it doesn't get old is incredible. Also, for an apparently very simple movie there's actually a lot of backstory spread around
That's what is so briliant. No clunky exposition, just pay attention to what you are watching. This is a classic example of SHOW, don't tell.

17:50 There is a quite moving history behind the polecats:
They were in the initial script of the movie.. but after seeing the actual cars and polecats George Miller (who is a surgeon) decided the risk was way too much for the stunts and he began to think how to do it in chrome or CGI .. when the stunt guys found out they took out several cars modified for the polecats in secret, did several runs safely swinging in then filmed it and presented it the next day to Miller as a "present" that they were willing to do his polecat vision for real and were quite sure of it...
I was completely blindsided by how much I loved this movie.

Same. I never saw the trailers, I know my dad LOVES the Mel Gibson trilogy so I was familiar with the series, and I just went and saw the movie in theatres. And holy balls my mind was blown for those amazing 2 hours. I still remember how much fun I had watching 😂
Me too. I knew nothing about it before i saw it in theaters, I was just accompanying my cousin in killing a couple hours at the movies. One of the best cinematic experiences ever.

That part of that crazy-looking guy playing the electric guitar with the flames shooting out that was just so awesome I swear. Must have been like the coolest part of the whole movie.
Doof Warrior is shredding in Valhalla
He has a whole backstory you can look up. George Miller wrote entire life stories for everyone.
Sounds horrible in real life.
But it can still burn people to death so nobody is dumb enough to complain.
That was a practical effect too!
Also, that flaming guitar man is married to the red head girl, the one who falls in love with Beast.
FUN FACT: The guy who was the head man of the cave people in this movie was in the 1979 version of Mad Max -- he was "Toecutter", the head of the biker gang that killed Max's wife and son.
Also, it's not just his name that implies this is the same character, as the car he crashes at the start is the exact same model as the one featured in the originals.

Sadly, Hugh Keays-Byrne, the actor who played Toecutter in the original Mad Max and Imortan Joe in this one died only a few months ago.
One of the most complete movies I've ever seen. It does what it does very well and it doesn't try to pretend to be anything else, if that makes sense. It's a non-stop thrill ride DONE WELL. Being a thrill ride doesn't mean you have to dumb your movie down. This movie still had amazing lore, world building and great complex concepts. The action was stellar, the directing, pacing, cinematography and music are all done so damn well. It didn't even need good acting.... but it still had Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy with great performances. It's just so damn fun.
It's the same character. George Miller explained it like this... Every film in the series is essentially a tale created by the different people who Max had encounters with. As the stories are passed down through the generations, details start to get changed, thus creating the continuity errors between films. Miller did confirm that in Max's timeline, this story takes place a few years after the events of Beyond Thunderdome.

Jack J Miller explained Max having his V8 Interceptor in Fury Road, but not in Thunderdome as being one of the many, many continuity errors that come as a result of Max’s stories being passed down as oral history. Over time, elements of the story get embellished, added, or subtracted. Max’s stories are literally wasteland legends passed down from elders to younger generations. All the stories are about the same man, but there is no solid continuity between any of the films. When pressed on the timeline, Miller clarified that the events that inspired the story being told in Fury Road chronologically took place after the events that inspired Thunderdome.
I know some people have said it feels weird that Tom Hardy would be playing the oldest version of Max, but when he filmed Fury Road, he was actually almost ten years older than Gibson was when he filmed Thunderdome.

The movie calls certain people "Full-life" implying that the rest are mutated/iradiated and dont live nearly as long. Immortan Joe is just the only old dude in a huge crowd of people who only live to like 26.
The Warboys are fearless in battle because they have the radiation and are dying. Thus the tumors on Nux and others.
Oh man I knew they'd love this movie. It's just nonstop badass at every turn.
I saw this on the big screen with a packed audience, and back then I had no expectations. To say I was blown away is an understatement. An incredible film.
The way they did the blue night scenes is by filming during the day and overexposing it. Then during post thry just colored it blue.
It's called a Day-for-Night shot. They've been doing it since the 1920s, maybe earlier. I usually hate how obvious they are, but Fury Road is stylized in such a way that it fits well enough.

Hardy was subtle and nuanced, he makes a great Max and I hope they make more.
he's so "subtle and nuanced" his character doesn't do anything of consequence for 90% of the film

Furiosa prequel in the works... although it will obviously not have Max in it. Hardy and Theron despised each other.

Talking about Tom Hardy...IMO, Max is not the protagonist of this movie. It’s definitely Furiosa. It’s her quest, she has the moment of despair, and it’s her triumph in the end. Max is just...there for it.
PoemJunkie it’s like a chapter in a massive book of the story of Max. This movie is just a chapter for furiousa. An I actually like that idea. That’s what the director said I believe. Like he wants to tell story’s about the world with max just involve with.
But that's true of the Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome. The only difference is that those two movies were told from Max' perspective, whereas Fury Road is told from both Max and Furiosa's perspectives.
@@spartacusx9349 BS. The movie shouldn't be called Mad Max, when the character isn't important to anything that happens. The character that's supposed to be Max, could be anyone else and nothing would have to change.
It's a bait and switch. Call the movie Mad Max, then the whole thing is actually about all the female characters. If they really had confidence in the movie, they should have let the characters it's really about be on the billboard, and let it sink or swim on it's own merits.
I don't have a problem with a female led movie, I do have a problem with being lied to.

Max helps here and there but he never saves the day all alone (apart the first movie maybe, but it's just a vengeance, he doesn't have anything to save anymore ...), it's more mutual interests between him and the rest of world.
Saying he isn't important to anything is incorrect but it's true that it's the first time another character has as much importance as him. Not enough to pretend that it doesn't deserve the title of "Mad Max" though.

This is one of those rare movies that genuinely benefited from 3D IMAX on the big screen. When Doof Warriors guitar flew at the screen, I was like, I WANT TO PLAY:)
I agree, I saw it on the big screen and the one thing that kept me in awe was the music during the action scenes, the soundtrack makes this movie epic
I remember the noises never ends until the storm scene : after they pass the sand storm the screen went black and everything was so silence .
This film is such a gorgeous film, even when its dirty, dusty, bloody and dark it's still so beautiful.
Top it off with no political agendas being shoved at you. No hidden messages. Just a good ol fashion 80"s style action movie that was incredibly well done.
That truck at the end, they flipped it for real too - scared the crap out of the director when he saw the dummy in the driver's seat lose its head (the stuntman driver was sitting next to it, in a small cage)
That's why the stunts are so awesome in this movie. They were all done for real like the original films.
Immortan Joe is portrayed by the actor who played the Toecutter in Mad Max.

It is meant to be a continuation, of sorts, of the first three films. The Mad Max films are meant to be watched as if somebody is telling you about the legend of Max.
That's why there's so many inconsistencies; such as how his car gets destroyed in every film, but it's back again in the next one.
There's a theory that Hardy is Feral Kid from the Road Warrior. And that he took the name Max because he never had his own.
I agree about the legend for the 2nd film (and possible the third) but certainly no t the first. Also, Max doesn't get the car until towards the end of the first film, it's not destroyed. It is destroyed in MM2 but he doens't have it at all in MM3. As for a continuation, although this is a fun film in it's own right (although the overaction from some commentators here makes me laugh/cringe "best film my arse") it bears little or no relation to the gritty world set up in the previous films. Instead it's a comic book over-the top movie. Nothing wrong with that.

George Miller doesn't really care too much about the continuity of the series. Fury Road is meant to be a fresh start of sorts as if the first 3 didn't happen, but it used an un-produced script for a 4th Mel Gibson film. So it can be viewed as a continuation but I think it just makes more sense as a reboot.
The backstory for Fury Road's interceptor is that after the original is destroyed in Road Warrior, he builds a new one using what's left and whatever scrap he can find. There are several distinct differences such as the headlight covers, the lack of rear spoiler corners on the Fury Road interceptor, and interior shots of the car don't show any left over police stuff. This also explains the decrepit and worn out state the interceptor is in at the start of Fury Road. The original interceptor would have run circles around the warboys. Apparently the story goes that he went completely insane between the events of Road Warrior and Fury Road and this is the result. My understanding is the chronological order is MM, MM2, Fury Road, and Thunderdome.
Started viewing the Mad Max movies as not being about him, but instead events of his world as seen through his eyes.
This is one of the greatest action movies of ALL TIME. Its up there with Die Hard and Terminator 2

It's such a Max thing to do to walk willingly back into anonymity. It's also kind of fun how this movie helps explain some of the things in previous movies. Like the warkid in Thunderdome.
thank you for your reactions. I was the principal fight choreographer and weapons advisor on the film and it was a huge task. we started on in in 1997 and finished in 2014 (with 2 penguin films in between, just top throw people off lol) so glad you enjoyed the project. that in itself is the reward for the pain :-) GVB
Some of the best stunts you will ever see in cinema and George Miller was in his 70s and made it this incredible seeing it in theatres was mindblowing
The Doof Warrior, the "guitar guy" was actually born blind and the mask he wears was made by cutting the face of his screaming mother after murdering her. There's a shit ton on the wiki and behind the scenes about this movie, a lot is unexplained which you can make out if you think hard on it but there's actually a lot of backstory you can find out.

The only way to resolve all of the movies is to look at them all as folk tales people tell in the wasteland about a hero named Max. That explains the varying degrees of how bad the post apocalypse is, or how far in, the similarities between the movies, and the Interceptor.
That's pretty much how the comic goes. All of Max's stories are being told by a Historian.
Thunderdome is told by the children who repopulated Sydney.
Road Warrior is told by the feral kid.
There is not similarity between this and the first 3 films other than token interceptor (lasts 5 minutes) and....well that's about it really. as for bad post-apocolypse, apparently they have plenty of wate.

And that's exactly how I view these movies. Each of them are various tales told by people who heard them from someone else so that's why each of them are different in many ways.

I've been to the theater many a times in my life and this had to be the most wild movie I've ever seen in there. In fact, I think the audience I was with would think the same since they were cheering almost every 3 minutes when the action was hot. Absolutely one of the greatest action movies ever made.
I cannot tell you how happy I was to see you guys do this!! One of my favorite action movies of all time. If you like the world, look up "The Doof Warrior". He was the guitar playing guy, interesting backstory. Same with "The Valkyrie", the woman who rode the motorcycle.
Can't believe there's somebody on the planet who hasn't watched Fury Road at least twice. Movie has an amazing soundtrack, great for gaming to. Definitely a must watch is the making of stuff that's plastered all over youtube. It's amazing how famous as actresses the wives have all become since this movie - when they were cast they were virtually unheard of.
The actor that played Inmortan Joe in Fury Road (Hugh Keays-Byrne) was the same actor that played Toecutter in the original Mad Max.
I was bowled over by this movie. I honestly can't remember the last time a movie excited me like this. Pure awesomeness from start to finish. One of the greatest action movies ever made. I REALLY hope we get the sequel
It's been talked about, but basically Max is a folk tale in-universe. That's why there's not steady continuity between all the films. The films essentially tell the story of Max as a heroic figure as a way of exploring the world that's been created.

This movie is the most metal thing I've ever watched.
I remember seeing this movie for the first time. There were moments I was literally bouncing up and down with sheer joy. I can't remember the last time a film excited me the way this did. It's sheer adrenaline, action movie perfection. Incredible!
This movie is a non stop thrill ride. Remember though that he is "Mad" Max. The British version of "mad". Max is actually insane. He sees things that don't exist and is lost in his own mind.
This review made me fall in love with this movie all over again! We'd play this soundtrack at work during overtime! WITNESS ME!!!

This was nominated for TEN Academy Awards (including for best picture and best director) and won SIX. For an action movie.
I remember seeing this in the theater (big screen, big sound!) and it was OVERWHELMINGLY awesome sensory overload!
Also - Charlize Theron is so amazing. I mean, here she is, amazingly beautiful, could probably coast just on her looks, yet willing to play a role like this one!
Easily one of the greatest action films of all-time. I haven't left a theater with that kind of smile on my face in a *very* long time.

Tom Hardy is a better Max than Mel Gibson. And I'm saying that as someone who grew up watching the Mad Max films. Truth is, Mel's Max was more iconic for his look than anything tangential to the character. Hardy's Max is far more approachable and interesting to watch.

Pretty much my story. Rewatched it a couple of days ago after not seeing it for four years. Started playing a game yesterday. And now this is uploaded. Good thing I stopped believing in coincidences years ago.

mad max is one of the best things ever happened in history of entertainment! it has the best story for a post apocalypitc world and its closest to reality. im surprised and happy to see that this movie is one of the first to get voted for their movie reactions. they should also try the game, i've spend countless hours playing madmax on ps4 and unlocked everthing, that game was so much fun, like the movie
i love that they used the ozzie colloquialism of "fang it" to mean "go fast" (in a car)
Mikey, from MwM on Filmjoy, in his episode on the movie makes a great point - this is a movie about being a good ally. And I think Tom Hardy played Max in a way where his ability to empathize with the plight of others did come across pretty well. Mel Gibson doing that seems... unlikely.
Oh man it was great seeing you guys react to my favorite action movie! Only one point of contention, Joe doesn't love his wives or his children, he sees them as possessions that have been taken from him, and it ties into the main theme of personhood and what it means to be human. Loved the reaction though! You had me grinning!
The only one he might have loved was the pregnant one. And that might have been more to do with the fact she was carrying his child.
The word "Imperator" is Latin and means Commander. The head of a legion was given "Imperium", essentially the ability to control life and death over the troops and area he commanded. The word we use Emperor is derived from Imperium.

Trivia: The actor who play Immortan Joe, Hugh Keays-Byrne, also plays the main antagonist in the original "Mad Max" as Toecutter.
I had to name my dog furiosa after seeing this movie. My God the color palette directing and practical effects are so incredible in this it's infinitely rewatchable.

I love this movie! I had my doubts about it when I first heard about it, being a big fan of the original movies. But I have to say it is on par with the originals. I especially love the fact that the movie special effects are like 95% practical effects. Very little CGI. The vehicles, the stunts, the choreography, all amazing. And the story was decent.
As far as I'm concerned this movie is a damn masterpiece.

they built all those cars we saw too, even those with 2 engine working on a single transmission. They built like 3 war rigs and really destroyed one of them... Insane.

I love how whenever Max fights he is literally doing and using anything to survive because his mindset literally revolves around drawing one more breath.

This is the ONLY series that is truly canon from start to finish. George Miller has been instrumental in the movies, comics, and video games to make sure that the canon in every medium works together. This movie is actually a follow up from the comics and video game. Not from Thunderdome. The flashbacks he has in this are not his daughter they are from characters in the comics. From a completely different story line than is in any movie. I gotta love GM for this. He doesn't want his story tainted with any outside source.

The theatre experience of this film is one I'll never forget some of the best directing of the modern era and it's done by a 70 something year old George Miller hes amazing

The guy who played Nux was also Marcus in About a Boy. The guy who played Immortan Joe also played Toecutter in the first Mad Max. Also, the director of Fury Road is the same guy that directed Happy Feet.
This was one of the last movies I showed my Grandpa before he passed. He was one to only watch repeats of gun smoke, Wagon train, and The Riflemen and after watching Fury Road he didn't say anything negative so I count that as a win and him liking the film.
Oh you cut out the peak of the epic dust scene! When the music crescendoes and the valves open to suck up air again
