1790 Hooks Tavern was once a Confederate Hospital during the Civil War

- Chad Ashton of the Hampshire History Hunters and I explore this old historic tavern. The owner is slowly dismantling the historic site. Once stately and on the Great Wagon Road west, this early period structure is all that remains from being a destination on past travels.

Even though you didn’t find a lot of treasure, the true treasure was hanging out with friends and sharing history we shouldn’t forget. Great video!
ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR VIDEOS LOVE The History and how you bring it alive as always thanks for taking us along God Bless
Thanks Mary.
If you google James Keelan from strawberry plains Tennessee, you will hear an incredible story of him protecting the strawberry plains bridge. James is my great great great grandfather, who was posthumously given the confederate medal of honor in 1994. His medal is in a museum in East Tennessee. I like your channel, God bless.
That is an awesome story. I have been to Strawberry Plains many times and lived in Knoxville for 5 years.
Sometimes you may not find great things, but you always make it interesting. Just the history on this old place is like a little piece of gold, it's just a shame it can't be saved. It got all of you out of the house, and brought us some good entertainment as well. Have a great one, and give a shout out to Chad, and Chigg.
Thanks Patricia. This place is a landmark on the highway. I was delighted Chad invited to detect it. I’m fine not finding lots of treasures but the fans like it more. I’m just happy to spend a day at an old gem like this place with friends.
It's a damn shame that this historic building is being allowed to deteriate.
I agree. Rare piece of history that will be too far gone too soon.
Deteriorate
Thanks again for another great adventure and history lesson. Enjoyed seeing the house. Y'all always make me smile. Keep up the great work 👍
👍👊💥💛thanks to all
This video is a treasure, as sadly it burned down earlier this month😢For many years we traveled past it on our way to Keyser, where my grandparents lived. Recently discovered your channel and my husband and I really enjoy it!
Thanks Carol. I have a Playlist on my channel that covers the Mauzy and Hook families who built and operated this Tavern. In the playlist I include the discovery of their homesite and the cemetery they are buried in that is taken over by time, woods and neglect. This structures destruction is a sad ending to an industrous family and it is very sad indeed.
A lot of stuff came out of the ground. It was all interesting. I always get enjoyment from watching your videos. 👍 As always, I enjoy learning about the history of the area you detect. Thanks again, god bless.
Thanks Ricky. We did find a lot but not what we were hoping for but in the end it was fun and a good day hanging out.
Thanks Todd! Love the story telling! I wouldn’t have known any of this without you. Stay safe boys!
Glad you enjoyed it
My cousin and I studied our Ancestry back to the 1400's in France..... William De Parmentier he was a Huguenot who left France and moved to England in the Early 1500's. In Essex County they hung out around the Hedingham Castle(still standing today but was ruined in fire a few years ago) where many religious ceremonies were performed, Christenings, Baptisms, Marriages/Weddings, Funerals, etc. In 1539 they left England via Ships and landed in Massachusetts, settling in a Boston suburb now known as Sudbury, MA., while in England they change our Sir Name from Parmentier, to Parmenter(thus making it English). They were Farmers, Tavern/Inn keepers, Glovers, Tailors, Rum Runners and Horse Thief's. One Horse Thief sentenced in Boston was sent to Prison..but the Prison was full, so they shipped his butt all the way to Australia.... where he served his time and met a woman, he later married and lived his there with her and their children..! =)
Wow what a story. I would love to see Australia. I wonder if he thought it was punishment? Sounds like he got the better deal.
It is fascinating to learn of the French and Germans immigrating to America for many of the same reasons. They were purposed in their convictions
@@AppalachianHistoryDetectives Yes, the Chigg has been to Australia... a few months ago. I got a big kick out of reading the Wills of people who passed... back in those days education was a bit slack, people couldn't Spell very good....but Will's were written and read with understanding & lots of Humor...! =)
I'm enjoying the new video editing style in creating you're videos & as always fun adventure. Thanks for bringing us along.
Glad you enjoy it! Cheers Johnny!!!
Todd Great video I love the house that is so cool!! Looks like you found my stuff except I find more nails. Great video
Hehe. I would have been happy with some Rosehead nails but these were too rusty. We did find a lot of iron but very little I. Terms of treasure
Something I've noticed about some people is they don't know the value of what they have until its gone.
That is with so many people. These old historical places are falling down.
I learn so much from your research and exploits!! Thanks!
Enjoyed the video, Todd. Great to watch you all relaxed and happy doing what you love. Thanks for the story and showing us the old inn.
Thanks. We knew it had been hit many times but the place is being torn up and we were given permission to see if anything was left. We still found a lot of stuff and had a great day out.
Thanks for another great video Todd , at least you guy's had fun and found a few treasures
Love it when you guy,s work together
Great video todd. Can't believe he's using a historical landmark for storage. Wow. Some people just don't get it. If your not sharing your knowledge of the past/history then it soon fades away for ever. An when it's gone it's gone. An it will never be know of ever again. That's sad that alot of people just don't care about the past or even want anyone else to share it with the world. Any how great story an great video as always. You do a great job an to that we say thank you, for all of your hard work. The detecting is the easy part wheather we find anything or not that's really the fun of it all. Although when it comes to putting together a video it's time to get to work. So todd, we all say thank you for taking the time an sharing some of the most amazing places that will soon be gone forever. An without you we would have never gotten to see them or known anything about then ever being a part of our past history. Thanks to you guys we at least we have gotten to see what was left an know some part of the story/history behind it all. Thanks again todd for all that you do. Until your next adventure. As always safe an happy hunting/digging.😁👍👍
Thanks Richard. I drive by this place often and am sad to see it falling into the ground. I always wanted to know its "story" so sought the permission. Most of these places fall in or are torn down without anyone knowing their contribution to our history. One day it will be gone, but its memory and story will be forever here on my channel. The artifacts while not what we were hoping for, were still period and what the treasure hunters left. Kind of like the building, everything good was sucked out of it only leaving what nobody else wanted. Why not preserve it in video I say....
@@AppalachianHistoryDetectives Yea, todd like I always say no matter who says what about or how you do or present your stories an your videos it's saving a part of history that is leaving this ol world.. You do a great job on every video that you do. An you always do your homework, an it always makes for a wonderful story to go along with the videos. Thanks for all that you do todd, on saving as much history as you can. Until your next adventure, have a great week an continue doing what you do best out in the fields of history. 😁👍👍
Nice hunting! Like the intro music in this video with you hunting and great finds such a beautiful place to hunt down the field
Thanks Alan. The music is purchased from Melody Loops. The name of the song is in My Credits at the end. Thanks for watching and commenting
The real treasure is the story behind these places.....thank you for the tag along. The music makes me wanna get up and clog.....but forgot how too 😓. Great adventure guys 💗. Stay safe 🕊️
I’ve never clogged before but I bet it’s a workout. Couldn’t believe we didn’t find harmonica reeds here.

You have GOT to remember to Aquachigger his meds before you start filming!! Love you guys ! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!
@@AppalachianHistoryDetectives i watch both of you all the time, he just seemed especially ornery the other day!
@@AppalachianHistoryDetectives You must have the patience of Job!!
I think that was a good day. Out with friends and finding a few things. Thanks and Happy New Year Todd, Chad and Aquachigger!
That must have been a huge Horse that lost it's shoe , I don't think I've seen one that large . Nice find for Chad . That's one old button , plus it has writing on it . Great find ! I just love how The Chigg waves at the camera like he's never been on film before . It cracks me up . I sure enjoy watching his vid's , and don't know how he puts out so many . But You're the Boss now , Todd ! lol Thanks for sharing . Enjoyed it immensely .
Thanks 👍
It is really sad how they are letting a lot of historical places just fall down and ruin. Pretty soon there will be no history left. I'm glad you let us see some of it.
I agree and why I wanted to preserve this through my channel. Getting a permission wasn't easy. I'm sure this place was picked by nighthawks...
Hey Todd, Not every hunt can be a great one, but the history was great and you and friends having fun, priceless. I think the thing Chad found, you thought was a lag bolt, could be a cotter pin?! It kinda looked like one. Did it have threads? If not, it was probably a cotter pin. To bad the place is falling into disrepair. It always is sad to see such things, but I don't know if folks realize just how much it takes to rebuild and keep up old places like this?! Many of the old barns and buildings in our county have just rotted to nothing because the old folks died, the families moved away, and there is no longer folks to keep them up. It is why what you are doing, recording the history, is so important.
For me, I so enjoy your channel, that I don't care if you dig pull tabs all day, (even if it does disappoint you). : - ) To see you out with the Chigg and Chad, or any other number of your friends or family, makes my day. In those moments I can see that you are all safe and well and enjoying the blessings of God, family and friends, and it warms my heart to see it.
Much and many thanks Lesa. I’ve considered a video on pull tabs before and trying to date them. Some have a history to them. We all find them but it is the can slaw that is so frustrating.
This old Inn was spectacular in its day. What a shame that it almost got a good owner. Now it’s doomed for destruction.
Thanks for being a great fan!
That site has likely been slammed, as you well knew going in, but the fact you found anything is awesome. The site alone is the treasure, its unfortunate it is going the way of the Buffalo. Your video documentation of the site is very important. Just swinging at such a site is amazing, whether you find anything significant or not. Thanks for taking us along!! 😎😊
Thanks Dogmo...the site was just too historical not to capture on video and try our hand at. Watching these landmarks fall into the ground is just so sad and one of the reasons I wanted to get it on video and provide its history to the audience.
Great Video! I've been watching the Chig for months, but never knew his name until this video . lol
This history is very interesting to me personally, my ancestors were French Huguenots who came here and settled in Danville Virginia.
That’s really cool. I’ve learned a tremendous amount of history researching these old sites.
Love the history in your vedio thank you for sharing
I always enjoy your videos tod thanks
Glad to hear it
When I see your videos, particularly when you look out over the land I think of what those people must have thought when they decided they had finished their travel. Then it was time to build their home. Looking at that view I can believe they thought they had found the land God promised.
Some of my ancestors also came fleeing as Huguenots and earlier War refugees.
I ponder the same thing. I wonder what they thought when they came upon the land. Of course the Indians didn't want to leave it either. Their graves dot the landscape too.
Great one, I can’t wait to get out with you next spring. I love the history lesson. Going to camp on a location for a week next year. 600 acres of colonial and civil war site. I’ll let you know. You need new gloves to go with the pants lol.
I go through more gloves than you would even imagine.
I thought you guys really might find some coins from the late 1700's there and some Civil War buttons on these grounds.
It certainly has been hunted, likely several times.
The D buckle might be the oldest relic. D buckles turn up often in digs where early coinage are found.
I follow a group of guys from Maryland, *"the Hoover Boys",* and due to their location, they unearth coins that stagger my imagination.
They are quite an endearing group of fellas, clearly respect the Earth, and have a spirit and sense of humor that literally raises my Thought Frequency. Give them a watch, as I know you will enjoy both their magnetic personalities and the history they discover metal detecting. A particular fun watch for you and your son, maybe the girls too, would be their "Surf Fishing North Carolina" video. I don't recall the title, but those keywords and Hoover Boys, will capture the video.
Don't let the intro predetermined what's to follow, us Catholics are "fine with the wine", so to speak, and allowed to dance too, lol.
This was a really great video, the History most worthy! ...and 1959 is close to my original debu. "North side Chicago, Edgewater Hospital", Hillary Clinton's place of birth too, although she preceded me by a few years. Not too far from my fav baseball field, the Landmark and Historic, the Great and the *World Series Winners, World Champions of 2016!, Chicago Cubs home Wrigley Field!!!*
*GO CUBS, GO !!!!!!!!!*
Thanks for the efforts along with the digs. I realize this can be time-consuming.
Look forward to some unique finds and History this 2021 Season.
Best Wellbeing to you guys, your families, and Viewers!

Fairly recent too
We always hope to find a those old coins or buttons. We had no misgivings about this one. It is a major landmark on the Highway and no doubt has been detected many times in the past but we still wanted to give it a try. Personally I’m not disappointed. It was a great day out with friends digging an old site. The Button Chad found was the oldest thing found but I’m happy with that buckle. It was a sight for sore eyes.
I've been by that place many times and often wondered what it was.
10:29 music is the same as CTR (Classic Truck Rescue). Great to hear the history of places you go.
Huh! I wonder where they got it. I pay for most all of the music I use. Maybe it’s a popular song! Haha.
great hunt fellers. loved the redskins pin. that WAS my team. i guess the chigs horse give out.go home and rest up and we'll look forward to the next'n. thanks again
Hey there....I was looking at the photos of the gloves and bag you gave me and trying to figure out where to put them in (video). I will find a place. The pin was my awesome find of the day and probably worth something now.
@@AppalachianHistoryDetectives i had a nice redskins ice bucket. i got tired of em losin so i gave it to my cuz.. got tired of lookin at it . the namechange was just salt in the wound. haha. yea those gloves would make a good rats nest. theyre thrashed. but it did have the big T on it. i might have some more swag around gotta look for it.thanks again todd

Todd, an other great adventure with Chig. Too bad there wasn't many artifacts per say. Always enjoyable with the history associated with the property you "swing" over and the music choices.

Hey Frank nice to hear from ya. Yep we didn’t get many “treasurable s” but we had fun and had a great day out and did pull a lot out of the ground...next time maybe.
old dogs just like to dig it lol.
At 7:40 the field behind you is part of a family friend i live 2 miles down the road. In that filed stood 2 houses thatthe union army burnt to the ground when they came thru.
Let's go check it out...
You need to get Digger Dave to dig the privy's there!
I actually live down the street from fort Early; named after Jubal Early here in Lynchburg, VA.
That’s really cool. Has it been detected?

No you started out slow but he end of fun in some good stuff it said the house is just falling apart the such a beautiful house were somebody had the money they could really fix head up in a good be a nice restaurant or something keep history going enjoyed it todd. 👍
So true Thanks Roger
I loved the videos of the Hook Tavern and the one of looking for the Mauzy homepage. I am a direct descendant of the Hooks and Mauzys that you talked about in your videos. Was wondering if the pictures at the beginning of the videos are of the Mauzy family. If they are I was wondering where I could get copies of them. We would also like to contact the owner of the Mauzy cemetery so we could come visit it on our next visit to Capon Bridge. Is there an email for you that I could get to communicate directly with you?
You can email me at appalachianhistorydetectives@gmail.com

Does the Redskin pin count as an indian artifact?😄
Maybe. It worth some money so I’m happy. 😜
Chigg says "Treasure!" and I want to dig up my back yard.
He would say let’s get started!
Hilarious. Loved it
You give up on the NOX?
Nope. Did well with it today. This video was before I bought it.
Maybe I'll watch the video later. Seeing it deteriorated like that is just too depressing. 😪
