Kurushi - Playstation 1 demo (Demo1)
This game is just as scary on the demo as I remember. It scared me as a kid because, unlike the full game, the demo has no music, so the eerie, deafening silence, only interrupted by the harsh, loud sound effects was quite unnerving to a child. The fact that the game takes place in a dark, empty void didn't help.
After 17 years I finally understand this game

Those sound effects had a feeling and style modern games don't provide anymore.
The music, too. I loved this era of gaming! I might just be nostalgic, especially being a 90s kid, but there was less of an emphasis on games being the big budget competitive blowouts they are now and more on the creative and adventurous aspect of gaming.
I feel like so many devs had this one in a lifetime fresh perspective with the jump to 3D. Nothing had yet been done to death like most 3D concepts have been today. Plus, games were cheaper and easier to develop back then, so a few devs could execute a game's original vision. Most console games nowadays require a whole studio of people operating under a hierarchy structure strictly focused on elements that will sell. Early PS1 games were almost like the Indie games of today. I loved and miss that single player immersion that's lost and often discouraged today.
Most PS1 games are underrated and this is one of them.
As a kid this was one of the most freakiest surreal games...I felt like I was in the matrix....and not the good shiny shiny kind

I remember the 1st time I got the PS1 for Christmas 1997 and my uncle had just finished connecting it to the TV. He put Demo1 on, and then it went to Kurushi and he accidentally held down the fast forward button, so immediately ALL the cubes came crashing down with the player and it said IQ: 0 😭🤣😅

I wonder if this is where they got the inspiration for the Tetris spoof "LIIIINEEEPIEECEEE!!!", but probably not. Also I wonder how many got nightmares from this game. Almost everyone I've talked with thought this game was too scary - Unintentionally of course.

Fuck, I must have got squashed by those blocks as a young kid a lot because I have AGAIN! burned into my retinas and eardrums.
The demo version was perfect. I don't know why they had to put that shitty Indiana Jones music into the full game. I know you could turn it off but it totally ruined the whole creepy atmosphere.
This game reminds me of a sci-fi movie called Cube. Just because their placed in an ominous situation and not quite sure how they got there, but have no choice but to play the game or die. Man I loved this old style of game production.
Even after 15 years or so I still have this, Demo 1 on PsOne such great memories! :)

I remember playing the demo version of this game on Sony PS1 when I was a kid and I also remember playing the full version of it when I was ten years old.
I know it is called Kurushi in Europe and PAL regions such as Australia 🇦🇺 and New Zealand 🇳🇿 but in Japan 🇯🇵 🗾, it is known as I.Q.: Intelligent Qube and in North America such as the USA 🇺🇸 and Canada 🇨🇦 where it is known as Intelligent Qube as well.
It's probably one of the most underrated PS1 games of all time and it is still a good game.
I didn’t understand this demo in 1998. I understand the rules now but no longer have the means to play it...

I’m pretty sure I have this exact demo disc somewhere 😅 also, full reflections on the floor is actually mad for year of release, even nowadays some games don’t have reflections in mirrors 😂
