The turning point here is the "SHUT UP" from Lando, you can't expect the race engineer to be confident in giving orders after that, Lewis was calm never shouted so for Bono it wasn't a problem to force Lewis into the pits
Totally agree with this- putting myself in Will Joseph's shoes, I wouldn't know what to tell my driver and when after that. Whilst I can see how stressful this situation must have been for Lando, I think he could have communicated in a much better way.
This video is a boon to Indians who lost coverage from lap 49 onwards. The broadcast was interrupted to play an IPL cricket match. Imagine missing the end of this masterpiece. 😭
He's one of the most underrated people in Mercedes. It's no wonder Lewis is so successful when you match his talent with Bono's man management and relationship with Lewis.
Bono is always calm in these kinda situations. Remember when Lewis lost his left front tire in the last lap, max behind?! Awesome understanding and communication between Lewis and Bono.
A big differentiator between Lewis and Lando's outcome in this race was communication. There is a clear ease between Lewis and his engineer. Lando on the other hand was always SO very HARSH with his engineer. The guy's voice seemed to tremble every time he came on to give a new piece of information. I think Lando was a little too greedy and got blinded by the possibility of victory shutting
Must have been massively stressful for Lando, knowing he had to hold off Lewis and be absolutely perfect in the slippery conditions for a few more laps to win. A real heartbreaker but I’m sure he’ll get his win.
The difference in communication is insane. Lando cuts his communication in stress, while Hamilton and Bono still talk. When Lewis is informed he can pit, and stay ahead of Max, he decides that finishing on top of Max is more important than risking a crash, which would be big blow against his title chances, meanwhile, Norris is unwilling to let go of a first time 1st place finish over a much more secure 2nd-3rd finish.
All he needed to hear to be sure he would win, maybe. Assuming the video is accurate as far as timing of radio messages, then that call happened after Hamilton went on inters anyhow so it wouldn't have influenced Merc tire decisions in any way.
The funny thing is: I expected Lewis to stay out. But Bono played it classy. Lewis was told: Bottas pitted, verxtappen pitted, Norris may have pitted! That sealed the deal. In this instance, the team had to convince the drivers because there was only 4 laps to go. And somehow I don’t feel bad for Norris. He didn’t give his team a chance to convince him. He literally shut them down.
@@RealLubba you are right!!! The call to stay out is almost 2nd nature to these drivers especially in the circumstance that these two were in!! That’s why the team strategists are so crucial. The call to pit had to be conveyed taking into account the driver’s personality and triggers..
Did you not hear the engineer tell him the rain wouldn’t intensify? While Bono told Lewis that it would get worse! Whoever was looking at the weather radar is the problem. Lando was never told the rain would increase.
More than driving experience, which is key for sure, what this shows is the difference on team engineering mentality. One side asserts to his driver, a multiple world champ at that, that he must pit. On the other hand, McLaren run with his driver on track feeling until it was too late. Certainly room for growth for Lando and the team.
Yeah 100%. Mercedes knew the had to overrule Hamilton, they have the weather radar and they know more than him about what's coming. McLaren needed to be way firmer with Lando and basically tell him he's coming in for new boots.
Yeah after he yelled to them to shut up? Nah this in my opinion is on Norris. He couldnt handle the pressure. Hamilton at no point sounded pressured even though it was to gain his 100th.
@@xtscarfacem8255 Im not saying is not on Norris fault, I agree on that, the inexperience failed him here. But taking that aside, the team should being more firm and tell him to just box instead of asking. Even the more knowing your driver is still young.
As much as we are bored seeing Lewis win, wins like these show why him and Mercedes have won all those titles. In critical situations they usually come up with the best decisions, excepting a few.
I don’t think so. The reason why It look like they don’t make many mistakes is because they don’t need to make any decisions in the past. They are so far ahead of the rest that it doesn’t really matter what they do, they will finish first. Only this year they have decent competition and as you can see, they do make mistakes.

2:25 I think this is the pivotal moment, Landos engineer saying the rain will remain the same (edit: they were both saying it wasn’t raining much at that point), Hamilton’s telling him the intensity will increase. I feel that this was the key for Lando choosing to try and stick to slicks until the end unfortunately, although he definitely should’ve listened to his engineer later on when he was asked about inters
It was a very unclear message tbh, yes the intensity will stay the same, but that means its still going to be raining and coming down with the same intensity, Mercedes on the other hand said intensity is increasing which means still going to be raining but getting heavier and worsening the conditions, both messages were unclear but Mercedes message made the most sense
in hindsight, you could say they made all the wrong calls and everything, but deep down with the uncertainty, lando made the right call to do the opposite of hamilton since once hamilton boxed he already covered the gap to lando if he boxed. Mclaren had no option but to gamble staying out and not getting caught so that lando gets the win. But unfortunately it rained more. All that info was given in only 1 lap time. Plus the command of going into the box to change tires. Stress is on both sides of the mic the same amount, just drivers are the ones you see on tv
The difference between engineers is clear, but still Norris was a bit childish with the emotions. I'm sure he will learn from this and come back stronger!! Go Lando!
@Magical The problem here wasn't the decision, was the yelling and telling his engineer to shut-up when he was just trying to help. This childish behavior, might have contributed to the McLaren engineer giving less and less information to comply with Lando request. Lando was acting as a solo man on the last 10 laps and not even considering anything he was being told. You won't win F1 that way.

What mclaren didn't realize is that Mercedes would always react to verstappen. But radars aren't 100% accurate. RB let Max decide if he wanted to switch or not because they weren't sure ether and fortunately Max made the right decision. There was a moment when Will advised Lando that track was already very slippery and Lando's reply was "Yeah shut up!". I think if Lando was composed and didn't let his temper tantrum took him over, he would've have made a better decision like Max. This what I heard from the full comms in chronological ordor. Will advised Landothat track was already VERY slippery and lot of cars were going off track. Lando's reply "Yeah! Shut up!". Will asked Lando again if he would like to switch to intern Lando angrily replied "NO!".

He just trusted them. That extra info about more rain coming may have helped to make him feel more confident in their decision though.
When I heard the result and what happened to Lando so late on I felt sorry for him. Not so much now after seeing this. He got what he deserved. Being disrespectful to your crew is a big no no. They got you to where you were.
McLaren trying to communicate in a crucial time for communication: Lando: "Shut up!" This is why F1 is a team sport. Your team isn't there to support you winning, you win as a team.
The ego on Lando. That P7 was well deserved. Shut up he tells his team. Shouts at them not to take inters and when they give him car settings to enter the pit gracefully. He needs taking down a peg or two. Glad Lewis, who was calm and respectful to his team took the advice and won to clinch the 100.
As much as I like Lando, he got the result that he deserved. His petulant, know-it-all attitude cost him the race. His race engineers tried various ways to convince him to pit for inters but he thought he knew best.
...also the fact that Lewis was behind he just couldn't bring himself to lose position regardless...and effectively Lewis did the undercut on him...Viola 👆
Experience shows the different between calm and anxious. I can understand lando feeling wanting to win it but . Can see Hamilton have full trust with the team engineer trusting their call. If only lando team was more firm with the call to bring him in he won’t fall behind so much
The communication difference is amazing. On one side, a engineer is talking with a seven times world champion and giving precise and clear imformation. On the other side, a engineer is almost affraid to displease a young pilot and letting him to make a critical decision based on his feeling on the track. I believe Lando will learn a lot after this what may be decisive to be a world champion in the future.
Masterclass, this is how you handle difficult times, calm and with a lot of confidence in what you have around you, Lewis handles it very well, the experience came into play big time here. Turn the table around and you would have way more nonsense comments about how Lewis was a loser for not listening to the pit wall, double standard at his best with some fan.
So Hamilton straight up trusted his team when they told him to pit the second time. He was already in the pit lane before they told him that rain would get worse. Thats teamwork
At the beginning (2:28) Lando is told: "We're expecting this intensity the whole race" and nobody tells him otherwise. Lewis is being told: "Rain intensity increasing" (2:40). Lando was definitely on edge but the initial information both of them got and which created the framework in which they took the decisions are very different.
And then did the race end there?? Did lando not see or feel the intensity of the rain increasing to go back to the team and say "Hey it's a different story out here"? He's the goofball who had the nerve to tell his team to "shut up". Well, handle it then big man.

A learning curve for both Lando and their team, sometime the team should ask the driver to come in than asking if they want to. Man, Lando was driving so amazing this race before the rain. Rain spoiled Lando but saved Max a lot of points
This shows exactly why F1 is a team effort and trust between the crew and the driver is essential in every race(win). Lando has learned a valuable lesson out of this. But then again, he still has so many awsome years in F1 to go. He will get there...
The moment LH pitted, Norris should have pitted. The team should have taken the charge as would not have lost much. Alteast P2 was confirmed even if he pitted on lap 50, that would have been enough
Agree, but Lando is egotistic. I don't quite get why he is so desperate for that Win. Maybe peer pressure? He even thought of snatching that Win from his team mate in Monza. He got 2nd, the best finish of his F1 career, yet you could tell in his eyes he was envious of Ricciardo
@@dendankegamer Harsh calling Lando egotistic when Lewis was about to make the same error himself. This wasn't just Lando at fault but the team also need to take responsibility for the loss. There is a subtle but key difference between the information Lewis got from his race engineer to that of Lando's which sealed the result. Lewis was told the rain was intensifying and it was wet at the far end of the track - even coming into the pits Lewis was unsure it was the right decision to switch to inters but trusted his team. Lando on the other had with the information he'd been given felt the conditions were tricky but manageable not realising the information was wrong and the conditions were getting worse. They were even asking him how he felt about going on inters rather than saying conditions have worsened pit for inters. So I think your critic of Lando is unfair based purely on how this race unfolded.
@Lim Heng 1st to pit will win, yeah that only works in hindsight of knowing it's about to hammer with rain. If you've been told it's not going to get worse then 1st to pit has lost as you're not making up a 25 second pit stop in 3 or 4 laps if the guys on slicks are only a few seconds a lap slower.... Lando was just in the lose lose situation. In the end it was a coin flip. Either they trust their weather prediction of not getting worse and stay out, or they ignore their own data and pit and hope they got the forecast wrong and Lewis then has to come in for inters after Lando. Awful situation.
Honestly I get it's disappointing Lando lost but I don't understand this trend of everyone feeling bad for him. He cost himself the race. He didn't lose because of a freak failure or something. Big fan of McLaren but there's nothing to feel bad for. He made a mistake due to his inexperience and likely learned a valuable lesson.
I agree. He was thinking too far ahead instead of lap by lap. What made me angry was the lack of communication between the team and Lando. We’ll get them next time
I feel bad for him too. If you listen to the radio messages he gets, they tell him it will not get worse (when 3/4 of the track was still dry) and that's what he based his decision to stay out on. The team should have called him in, instead of leaving the choice to him. So I can't blame him for making that call.
I don’t think it’s really inexperience. Alonso, Perez, Leclerc and Vettel all stayed on the tyres too long and they’re not exactly inexperienced. Alonso was told the same as lando that the rain would not get worse
Lando engineering : What you think of inters? Lando: Shut up... No... Arrogance, inexperience, uncooperative and being extremely shortsighted was Lando's recipe for his disaster race. This is why Hamilton is a champion and not Lando.
it's his 3rd year and it's his first time at the front of the front. He was being chased by a faster car and had to manage with the rain. Hamilton has experience in this therefore knowing what to do. Lando will definitely learn from this.
I don't know but it's very strong for you to have everything and then nothing, lando really deserved all that, the important thing is that he learned and gained experience, maybe next time lando will be pole.
@LewisHamilton2020 I listened to it Lando's radio calls, it wasn't clear he should pit. I think the team missed the call, partly because Lando was really strong about staying out.
Indeed, and his relationship with Will Joseph clearly needs work. Telling him to shut up discourages communication at a time in the race when relaying information, and having a conversation is paramount.
I think you also have to understand though, he was heart broken, and h Eli’s young, he’s got a lot to learn. I think any driver in that situation would be angry, frustrated and all sorts of negative emotions. It’s hard to judge Norris' character by a situation like this where he is still learning to trust in the process. Give it a few years, who know maybe we can see this sort of thing again and see his reaction, we live and learn
"we've just gotta stick with it" - who makes the decisions in Mclaren lol. How did they let an inexperienced driver such as lando makes such a pivotal decision.
Because weather radars aren't 100% accurate. Divers feedback is more reliable than the radar. It can only predict but doesn't mean it will happen. Red Bull even let Max made the decision.
@@TheLibermania Merc gambled to trust the radar. is this your first time watching wet race? Alpine relied on Alonso and stayed longer on slicks, so is Ferrari with LeClerc or RB with Perez. and it didn't pay off. Red bull let Max decide if he wants to switch. Ferrari let Sainz decide if he wants to switch and it paid off. That's wet race for ya. Teams gambled on their drivers or the radars. Sometimes they win, sometimes they don't.
Apart from the clear difference in communication, did anyone else notice how much Lewis started to change his line or throttle/brake application at the very beginning as things started to get wet. Lando tried to drive faster to beat the rain whereas Lewis went for a compromise between pace, and information he was receiving from his team. I think Lando has learned from Russia and from Belgium that for sustained success even in tricky conditions, no matter how talented or succesful of a driver you are, there are an incredibly few situations in F1, when you can out drive the weather. Especially when nearly half of the grid or more were spinning off because of the same weather (well unless it's only Mazepin spinning). Lando will go far, and his day will come, one day we'll maybe be able to look back at it like we do now with Lewis 2007 Chinese GP or like Seb's Germany 2018.
Norris' attitude was, "I know what I am doing. Shut up!" Hamilton's attitude was, "Please tell me. Discuss further." Hamilton is a 7 time champion. Norris is not even once. A lot to learn from this. Teachability, humility, knowing one's limit, knowing when the team knows more and hence to listen and pay heed, knowing the team means well which means great teamwork and relationship, be on top of pressure, cool headed, keeping communication open, yet quietly calculating and weighing the odds and not blindly following, sensing from the tone and words when the team is insistent and when the team is voicing a preference ....
@@zuludeltanovember There are a lot of drivers with worse attitudes on the radio like Kimi/ Alonso/ Max. They’ve all shouted and sweared on the radio and they seem to be pretty successful. I’ve heard a lot worse comments that drivers have made to their engineers than “shut up”.

The unprofessionalism and lack of communication between Lando and his race engineer compared to Lewis’ engineer’s perfect communication and bond lost them the race. Lando still has a lot to mature.
Think the difference between Hamilton and a lot of other drivers, including Max I think, is that he sees the bigger picture. It’s not about winning this race, it’s about consistently getting points. That’s why he backs out more than Max does. Yeah Max may win more races this season but I predict he’ll have more DNF’s which will end up costing him the championship.
Well, yes obviously, Max' tyre blew in Baku, he crashed with Hamilton in GB, neither of them backing out but Max being the unlucky one. Same with Monza, though there they both retired.. So yea it's pretty safe to say that Max is gonna have more retirements...
That is just Lewis being wiser and more mature with age. 10 years ago, Lewis WAS Max. Supremely talented but he was accused of being too aggressive and tended to get himself into needless trouble, same as Max now. Now, he is comfortable in the best team and car for the last 7 years. He has the ability to let things come to him, as it were, without feeling the need to make anything happen, whether that is because of youthful exuberance or being in an inferior car. In time, and having on a WDC or two, Max will mellow out just the same.
@Steve Evets: "10 years ago, Lewis WAS Max". I agree with your point: talented young drivers tend to be hotheads. But yet, 10 years ago Lewis already had a championship.

He had 99 victories. Lando zero. Thats the difference.

😂😂😂😂😂
The funny thing is: I expected Lewis to stay out.
But Bono played it classy. Lewis was told: Bottas pitted, verxtappen pitted, Norris may have pitted! That sealed the deal.
In this instance, the team had to convince the drivers because there was only 4 laps to go.
And somehow I don’t feel bad for Norris. He didn’t give his team a chance to convince him. He literally shut them down.
I like to believe that, if norris had pitted and Lewis were fighting for his very first win, he would have made the same call as lando now
@@RealLubba you are right!!! The call to stay out is almost 2nd nature to these drivers especially in the circumstance that these two were in!!

Well hard to be assertive when ur driver, who is winning his first race, aggressively tells u to shut up.
Yeah 100%. Mercedes knew the had to overrule Hamilton, they have the weather radar and they know more than him about what's coming. McLaren needed to be way firmer with Lando and basically tell him he's coming in for new boots.
@@whygamewhy Doesnt matter, you have the radar and you know what a lot more about the weather than the dirver, you have to be more firm.

I don’t think so. The reason why It look like they don’t make many mistakes is because they don’t need to make any decisions in the past.
It was a very unclear message tbh, yes the intensity will stay the same, but that means its still going to be raining and coming down with the same intensity, Mercedes on the other hand said intensity is increasing which means still going to be raining but getting heavier and worsening the conditions, both messages were unclear but Mercedes message made the most sense
credit to Bono, he gave clear information even for us the viewers
in hindsight, you could say they made all the wrong calls and everything, but deep down with the uncertainty, lando made the right call to do the opposite of hamilton since once hamilton boxed he already covered the gap to lando if he boxed. Mclaren had no option but to gamble staying out and not getting caught so that lando gets the win. But unfortunately it rained more. All the comments haters make about Hamilton, or Verstappen or whoever with regards to how they behave in and out of the cars, they're all like it, it's competitive determination at 200mph. They don't have time to be nice, they only have time to be blunt and to the point. Engineers all know this, and will be used to dealing with fiery drivers.
Well said. In my opinion there should be no comment section on UA-cam, as most of the comments are from trolls. It's a shame that F1 now has the same sort of fans as football fans.

Ohhhh, so when they told Hamilton that there was more rain coming, Hamilton had already started going into the pit lane, so that comment about more rain coming wasn't a factor in Hamilton's decition to go in. He just trusted them. That extra info about more rain coming may have helped to make him feel more confident in their decision though.
Nice analysis mate!!!!!
Could have been a delay in the transmission too. They probably said that radio message before he got to the pits.
2 of my favourite drivers but gutted for Lando
When I heard the result and what happened to Lando so late on I felt sorry for him. Not so much now after seeing this. He got what he deserved. Being disrespectful to your crew is a big no no. They got you to where you were.
McLaren trying to communicate in a crucial time for communication:
Lando: "Shut up!"
This is why F1 is a team sport. Your team isn't there to support you winning, you win as a team.
Congratulations lewis. Number 100 for the number 1 guy in Formula 1. Let's get that 8th championship
His race engineers tried various ways to convince him to pit for inters but he thought he knew best.
exactly
He isn't as matured as the other top team drivers. Takes time to be matured enough to fight for the Championship
I think it was less know-it-all and more being so close to his first win and getting emotional
...also the fact that Lewis was behind he just couldn't bring himself to lose position regardless...and effectively Lewis did the undercut on him...Viola 👆
He’s always seemed like that
Experience shows the different between calm and anxious.
Lando disrespected Will by telling him to Shut Up,
He paid the price
Wow Will really dished out some karma there, didn't he? Bet McLaren is happy Lando got what he deserved /s
GP would've put him in his place.
Will Smith is friends with Lewis. I understand Lando's emotion.
At the beginning (2:28) Lando is told: "We're expecting this intensity the whole race" and nobody tells him otherwise. Lewis is being told: "Rain intensity increasing" (2:40).
Lando was definitely on edge but the initial information both of them got and which created the framework in which they took the decisions are very different.
this
👌🏾🎯
And then did the race end there?? Did lando not see or feel the intensity of the rain increasing to go back to the team and say "Hey it's a different story out here"?
He's the goofball who had the nerve to tell his team to "shut up". Well, handle it then big man.
@@Agnelum1 oh no, the kiddo said to shut up, we will hide in dark corner and cry, won’t give him info anymore. It’s their work, to analyze situation and make decisions based on full info. Why don’t we hear “Lando box box” from Maclaren engineers? Oh, because they left young inexperienced boy to decide by himself, great work.
A learning curve for both Lando and their team, sometime the team should ask the driver to come in than asking if they want to. Man, Lando was driving so amazing this race before the rain. Rain spoiled Lando but saved Max a lot of points
When your getting overtaken by Mazapin you know your in trouble
This shows exactly why F1 is a team effort and trust between the crew and the driver is essential in every race(win). Lando has learned a valuable lesson out of this. But then again, he still has so many awsome years in F1 to go. He will get there...
Is that Lando, Is that Lando going slowly ? That's Lando, oh my goodness me
The moment LH pitted, Norris should have pitted. The team should have taken the charge as would not have lost much. Alteast P2 was confirmed even if he pitted on lap 50, that would have been enough
Agreed a sure second place for lando cause max was way back about 50+ seconds so in hindsight he should have pitted right after Lewis
@@overdoze7 He is a racing driver, many drivers would have done the same. is there anyone that can remember when raikkonen did almost the same thing
That combination Lewis/Bono is pure gold!!
He definitely made a bad call but his team should’ve overridden him as they had more information.
@@jonathanbarrios162 hmm I thought Lando told them to "Shut up shut up!!!". They just comply
I don’t think it’s really inexperience. Alonso, Perez, Leclerc and Vettel all stayed on the tyres too long and they’re not exactly inexperienced. Alonso was told the same as lando that the rain would not get worse
Lando panicked so much, he couldn't stand the pressure from Lewis. His "shut up!" screams confirm this.
Exactly, his lack of experience showed when the pressure was on. Hopefully he learns from this and listens to his team next time.

Hamilton and Mercedes are on another level.

Lando's arrogance took away his victory refusing team orders and telling them to shut up next time trust the team

WHY WOULD HE REGRET TELLING HIS ENGINEER TO SHUT UP WHEN HE WAS JUST BEING HIMSELF???
No matter how funny Lando might be at joking moments, he's still very arrogant though.
Indeed, and his relationship with Will Joseph clearly needs work. Telling him to shut up discourages communication at a time in the race when relaying information, and having a conversation is paramount.
And ain't funny under pressure. Wonder if his sm popularity creates that additional pressure
His immaturity and sheltered background definitely comes into view once the polish comes off.
@@wh6055 isnt he british
I think you also have to understand though, he was heart broken, and h Eli’s young, he’s got a lot to learn. I think any driver in that situation would be angry, frustrated and all sorts of negative emotions. It’s hard to judge Norris' character by a situation like this where he is still learning to trust in the process. Give it a few years, who know maybe we can see this sort of thing again and see his reaction, we live and learn
"We finished P7" that line from Will in that tone is enough to understand what happened😔
@@skiiwine9973 So what did Mercedes do? Rely on the Feedback of an experienced 7 time world champion or telling him that it's going to rain more?
Don’t forget McLaren trusting Norris’ decision of which tyre to go on in qualifying is what ultimately got him pole
And how many experienced drivers made the exact same decision? Vettel and Hamilton were two of them...
Hamilton is truly amazing

@@overdoze7 right. "Shut up" ruined his race

@@spersieboon And still 2 points difference
That is just Lewis being wiser and more mature with age. 10 years ago, Lewis WAS Max. Supremely talented but he was accused of being too aggressive and tended to get himself into needless trouble, same as Max now. Now, he is comfortable in the best team and car for the last 7 years. He has the ability to let things come to him, as it were, without feeling the need to make anything happen, whether that is because of youthful exuberance or being in an inferior car. In time, and having on a WDC or two, Max will mellow out just the same.
