Learn more ways to speak more politely in English in my new video: ua-cam.com/video/0uO_GKExLMo/v-deo.html I cover strategies like using modal verbs, avoiding one-word answers, and more!
Hi Adam I lived for over 5 years in USA and I have to recognise you are one of the best English teachers I am met in my life! I adore your lessons! Hang in there! A giant hug from Trentino. Alfonso
Thanks for the lessons. In Europe when you need to use the bathroom at a friend or relative's house you ask if you can "wash your hands". When I first came to the US and used the expression I was shown the kitchen sink. :)
Hi! I'm from Brazil and i had a english course done recently. I keep studying here with the engvid videos. I love all the teachers. Thank you for teaching us more and more ways to speak like a native speaker.
"Fat" can also be softened to "heavy-set" or "heavy". Sometimes people will say someone is "big-boned", which is another nice way of saying they're fat. For women sometimes you can say she's "curvy". But I think a shift is happening in US culture; people are trying to get away from "fat" being a bad word, because it really isn't. Just like calling someone "tall", "fat" is simply a descriptor. But until it's fully accepted, I would recommend using a euphemism for fat :) "Used" can also be "pre-owned" or "secondhand". For "pregnant" you can also say "she's expecting." But it's also important to note that it's rude to assume a woman is pregnant, and you should never NEVER ask her "when are you due?" or "are you pregnant?" (or any other variation). You should always wait for her to tell you first. It's very rude to ask a woman if she is pregnant just because her stomach is big - it could just be that she has gained weight and it is extremely embarrassing to her if you call her pregnant when she isn't.
better to save "Curvy" for busty women with a big bubble butt , It sounds very meaningless to call a woman with big saggy boobs and fat around hips a curvy woman.
I beg to differ. I know "curvy women" refers to the ladies with an hourglass figure. E.g: Wow, the nice lady has a small waist; she has a curvy figure.
I admire you, Adam, and the way you teach .. You're incredibly great. Your lessons are always useful. I hope you can make lessons on adverbs collocations .. Highly regards
i'm from indonesia, and now. i want to learned english to much. it's so interesting with all your describe and made me understand. and then, i can write word everyday for start of study about my english. so special this video and others. thanks sir :)
Good points... "Man's speech is the revealer of his heart. In whatever world the heart travels, man's conversation will revolve around that center." ~ ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Bahá’í Faith
Whoa, as a non-native I had always noticed this manner but had just know that it has its own term, "euphimism". Thank u very much, very interesting and helpful!
Hello Adam. Thanks a lot about your way of teaching, you are patient and polite. I have seen some of your videos and I mean all of them are well explained and useful. Please receive a greeting.
Hello Adam... Very clear and useful video. When Latin speakers start to speak English, frequently they choose direct expressions and this sounds so rude. To avoid these situations, one solution is to know some euphemisms... For example, I don't want pass away yet!
I admire and love your way of describe the meaning of what you want to deliver to us. My level is not very well in English but when I saw your videos I feel my level is raise up. Keep going and we waiting your new video.
Thanks Adam, you have passed around an interesting video. I would also add these euphemisms: 1.light-fingered = a thief 2. has/have been doing time = has/have been in prison 3. No longer with us = passed away 4. make an honest woman of her = a man who has married a woman
I can spend all my day watching your videos!! They are so interesting!!! by the way i am an English teacher, but i love your lessons and I got a lot thanks too much
Thank you so much , this video really helped me .I am taking the FCE Cambridge Examinashion in 3 days and i very anxious . I hope this video helped other too . Keep uploading videos , they are great . :D
Just a word of caution about "bun in the oven" and knocked up." BOTH are considered slang expressions in English, and should therefore be avoided in polite, formal, and most standard conversations. The reason that "pregnant" itself is avoided is partly that it is seen as too direct; Americans in particular have a problem with words that even hint at sex or other bodily functions -- believe me, it's a cultural thing -- and they therefore try to avoid them whenever possible. So the better choice is to say that someone is "expecting," unless the person who is expecting indicates by her own usage that she prefers "pregnant." Also, the reason that "used" fell out of favor (especially with regard to cars) is that it carries a negative meaning of "there's something wrong with it, which is why the previous owner got (or wants to get) rid of it." So you'll often hear "previously owned" (or, more commonly, "pre-owned") instead of "used."
In regards to a woman being pregnant we usually say "She's expecting" that's the polite way instead of she's pregnant. The other you mentioned "knocked up" that is slang normally is reserved for girls that are sluts or whores. Especially if she has multiple children from different fathers.
Joe Wood I think we need an expression for MEN that have multiple children with different mothers they never married that's equally derogatory...jmo. (just my opinion) :)
Hello Adam! Your lessons are very useful and interesting! Your explanation is very clear! I realy admire your teaching! Thank you so much! Look forward next videos. Best regards.....
Adam, thank you so much! You are so good at explanations! Probably you are the only who can explain difficult and sophisticated things in that easy way. Subscribed!

Thank you Adam , your videos are very informative and interesting ...About the last question of the quiz , marked negatively for me , the answer can easily be 'got laid off' as we do not know if she died or survived the car accident.
I like the lesson because it's useful and interesting. One day I may use those words you have reached me but first I need to improve my English skills by your lessos🧐

You're gonna mislead people, because it's not eveywhere in Europe. In France we just say Toilet, and it's not rude. :)

The last one sounds awful, wasn't she honest before? She had to marry him to be "honest"?
