This is the baritone aria from “Les Miz.” Baritones get no love like the tenors do. However, for me, baritone is my favorite male voice. Bryn Terfel is one of the best.
beautiful voice!
Baritones are the sound of masculinity!
Philip Quast is hardly a baritone.
Philbert Chow doubt.
@@philbertchow5425 quast has a range that extends between bass and tenor, that is a baritone.
I’ve always adored Philip Quast singing this, but my goodness Bryn Terfel has the same tingling response from me.
Finally! The voice this song deserves.
Sir Bryn not only sings, he embodies every phrase, every word. And this strong resonant voice he has developed! A great master.
Whatever Sir Bryn Terfel sings, well, it simply will be wonderful.
Oh my such a beautifully rich voice
that's why musical actors and actresses must learn classic vocal. It's another level.
So many people complaining he got the words wrong in the first verse; it happens. Not every performance can be perfect. I'm glad he didn't even show that he made a mistake, he just kept going. He sounds fantastic.
Kiri Te Kanawa got off track when singing "Dove Sono" from Le Nozzi di Figaro at the Met Gala in 1985. Can happen to any one.
@@williampelto6095 My point exactly
@@chileplease3474 Glad we agree. Have a music-filled day.
What a great , powerful voice , it does not get any better than this ! ! !
FANTASTIC !!!
The expression ,the interpretation ,is excellent , brilliant .👍.
This is just so perfect for me. The power that Javert contains is parallel to the voice of Byrn Terfel.
Nice to see it's not just me who gets the words muddled up lol...great singer!
My favourite song from Les Miz
A tremendous voice such a natural rendering.
Bryn Terfel - He's one of the best!
What a voice. Magnificent. Made me cry.
Шикарное исполнение. Восхитительный голос. Рыдаю.
Une de mes voix préférée
Thank Goodness for UA-cam!! My introduction to "Stars" and to hear all the various talent singers performing it, makes me give respect to all those that sing it and gives it the respect that it deserves!!
Simply the best...Sir Bryn
The voice of Javert in my ears.
One of the best! Thank you
Ive not listened to him much before but what a voice and what a sound.
seen the whole show 25 years ago i thought omg no one is better phillip quast ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i love this chap x
Phillip Quast is the best!
That was amazing!! Wow!
Totally gorgeous
just speachless
All those who moaned that he sang the wrong words at the beginning when you can sing as well as Bryn you can comment about it he is a really good singer
I mean, a lot of us can, in fact, sing pretty damn well even if we aren't famous lol.
Quast stands alone....
Stunning. However, he could sing anything retaining my full attention. My maternal grandmother was a Cardiff lass she would have loved him. I think of her while I listen.
Now that’s how it’s done 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
To me he is the one that sing this song better than anyone else, 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 just perfect!!! Thank you for sharing.
ERMMM apart from singin wrong lyrics TWICE
I love his voice…saw his performance as Sweeney….I saw Groban play Sweeney in New York…..This man remains my favorite Sweeney!
I would love to see him play Javert! He’s about the right age, and it bugs me when they cast young actors (20s-30s) to play Javert!
I agree but I feel it is less about age but rather the look of the character should be a rugged and fear inducing character
@@antemahoney4376 agreed, I just always think it’s so odd when he looks so much younger than Valjean
@@unicornalq11 absolutely
@@unicornalq11He is supposed to be younger than valjean by about 11 years
Wonderf👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Bryn wows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes mate
Number 1 version
Second best from quast
Bst version ive ever heard
To answer a comment further down Bryn is a very proud Welshman ❤❤
Always though Bryn should have been in the movie version.
I agree. Having heard him as Scarpia in Tosca I thought he was an obvious choice for Javert in the movie. He has the voice and would have brought a dramatic tension to the role (both sung and said) that Russell Crowe was, predictably, unable to bring.
❤️

I love this guy, love his voice, love his other works, but he can't get the feeling across in the song as can Phillip Quast.
My Mum always preferred Quast's performance. She said the same thing, that Quast had a certain amount of emotion that no one else brought to the song.
The difference is that Terfel isn't singing and performing the song in the theatre sense; rather he's adapted it to more of an operatic piece.
Empty chairs and empty tables- Jonathan Antoine, Bring him home- Josh Groban, But Stars - Bryn Terfel❤❤❤
Can't believe he flubbed the end of the first verse. Otherwise, as usual, he has such power seemingly effortless.
Haha I was just thinking whattt that didn’t rhyme/ was something off? Hahaha
I, too, was surprised. I actually thought the audio just flickered or something LOL
For the first time, I'm glad to be a forigner, who does'nt understand the lyrics😂
Bryn forever. This was wonderful. I'm still trying to find his Met opera performance of Figaro with Renee and Cecelia. Could someone download it Please???
400th like!
Yaaayyy lol
:)
Is it me, or does this man have an incredible voice? I feel like he could have the lead in The Phantom,Les Miserables,Little Shop of Horrors,Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde and several other amazing titles from Broadway.
He is a world famous opera singer.
Delicious
Bryn should play the phantom in POTO
Might have wanted to get the words correct ...Wow
#exlesmislondoncastmember 😊
Honestly, the only version doesn't scream "I'm the villain", I thought he is a disney princess
This is good, but the person who has sang this role best is Philip Quast.
I bit of color and shine is missing!
Like Phillip Quast Bryn has the right strong Baratone voice to sing this song well done Bryn
Mr. Terfel should have been used to dub for Russel Crowe in the movie version of this show.
William Pelto Most folks suggest Philip Quast for that...but either would be 1000% better
Or you Cast another actor to begin with. I mean the other actor in the movie have the name to bring in the money and the voice to pull a great performance off.
Or bandaras to play it full stop
Or you train Crowe to sing properly
@@mrcrabskachow3373 I agree. I teach voice and it can be done. Once you find the "hollow" of your voice it can be done.
Bryn has the voice of a baritone angel, but if you are going to sing one of the all time musical theatre baritone classics, you need to tell the story of the lyrics. I wish I had an ounce of his talent, but this performance left me feeling underwhelmed.
And what is with the 'm's in place of the 'n's?
He’s a Welsh speaking opera singer, cymraeg is his first tongue
He sings beautifully, but never gets into character in the way that Philip Quast did for 10th anniversary concert. Quast WAS Javert. Terfel sings Javert.
Quast has been singing Javert his whole life, the whole role. That makes a huge difference. To compare is easy, putting things into context is wiser. Both Quast and Terfel give me chills, extraordinary performers.
Yes.
He's not in a play, he doesn't need to get into character.
@@lunavanbutterfly1594 Sorry, I thought this was taken from a musical?
In the line “and each in your season returns and returns,” he seems to be pronouncing an “m” sound in “return” instead of the “n.” He also does this with “written” a few lines later in “and so it is written.” Is this a singing technique? If so, what is its purpose?
It's done a lot in Spanish and Italian, depending on the specific dialect. I can't say for sure why he does it here, but he's a native Welsh speaker and has performed mainly in Italian and German on stage, so I'm guessing it's a carryover from the emotional delivery of Italian opera.
Or his lip might have just been sweaty.
He’s Welsh
He sings awesome but remembers worse...
He reversed the lyrics
He ist good, but he isn't Philip Quast ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Nice but shame got the words wrong (ex Les mis cast member rite here)
So? No problem…
I think he’s one of the best singers, I just don’t think he fits Javert at all.
I agree. Beautiful voice, but absolutely zero essence of Javert. Its like the lyrics do not mean anything.
Ya honestly, he seems more like a valjean, not just because of his deep voice but he seems more like a gentle giant than an insane grotesque inspector.
He look like joaquin phoenix
Do you have eyes?
Tobey Maguire
Amazing voice, but look up Philip Quast’s version. Quast embodies Javert for me - I think he tops this. Bryn fluffed the words here!
He did mix the lyrics up, but he was a true professional and continued. The conductor and orchestra was smart enough to keep going too, but overall, he did a good job. He's got an excellent voice. Quast is Javert. As others have put, he embodies Javert. He understands the psychology of who Javert is, so he understands how Javert thinks. This assist majorly when taking on the persona of a character. You have to understand that character the same way you understand yourself.
He did big time and just about got away with it.
Oh funny, wrong lyrics at the end of the first verse?
Yeah, I sometimes get those confused too when I record this, it's an understandable mistake.
MrKhatMan But if you understand the lyrics, it would be hard to make this mistake. In the first verse, Javert is saying that those who are righteous have their reward, in contrast to those who fall, who will have the flame and sword. Plus, the other way doesn’t rhyme lol.
He mixed up the lines ??
Lol. Wagner meets Broadway
It's somehow not right, is it? He's obviously not convinced by the song! Stick to the classical stuff, Bryn!
He probably doesn’t chose everything he sings at these concerts
I love this song, but I didn't like this at all. Messed up the words and that irritates me
Thanks for the love and support you have shown to me it means a lot to me, you can reach me on this email

Michael Ball sings this better!
I don't like Terfel's sound in gral and here he is too exaggerated on some notes in which there's no need to be so. Like Netrebko and Kauffman, another cheap item of marketing!
Bryn sounds a bit flat throughout his performance to me.
It's somehow not right, is it? He's obviously not convinced by the song! Stick to the classical stuff, Bryn!
His classical stuff is pure shit as well.
Sounds great to me. I'd pay to hear him sing this in any venue.
