Thank you so much for this video, I am constantly battling with these in my garden. I am currently sifting through compost from a large container picking out the grubs, at least they are visible & the robin is enjoying a large lunch. Anyway looking at the bonuses I have discovered your wonderful channel.
I've just lifted my dying strawberries in mid April 2023 to find a lot of grubs. I've hand picked some 250 of them and put them into a container which some blackbirds and a robin quickly emptied. What was particulary satisfying is the the robin was taking several at a time off in it's beak to presumably feed it's young. Considering washing the roots of surviving plants and putting them back in for the rest of the season and looking for adults at night later in the year.
Hi. Recently My husband and l have been working (during lock down) very hard on making raised beds for our veggies and guess what? Vine weevil infestation in our beds. Very disappointing... Almost discouraging to further growing... We do torch patrol every night and they even play dead on us, buggers! We are going to use nematodes on every single part of our garden which hopefully will give us some kind of control. So much to learn... Thanks for the video. It looks like we are not alone with them...
Hi Monika - they really are a menace and I know only too well how laborious and time consuming torch patrol is! We are very sorry to hear of your veggies after all your hard work making raised beds - so frustrating but keep growing: don't let the little blighters get you down! Nematodes will help you and thank you for watching our video, it is much appreciated by both John and myself. We wish you the best of luck with it all 🌱
Hi, I have just subscribed to your channel. Thank you for all the info I've seen so far. You may already have done a video on these before, but was wondering what you would suggest for controlling leaf rollers on canna lilies. I only planted them for the first time last year, but as the leaves grew they were full of holes and I kept finding leaf rollers in the leaves. No matter how many I removed, the next day there would be more. I also suffer from vine weevils, more so because all my plants are in pots as I only have a yard in the back. It is exhausting going out every single night to remove them, but it has to be done. Only takes one to lay eggs to wreak havoc! Nematodes can be quite expensive too. I'm not even sure I apply them properly.
Hello Nana - firstly I am sorry to take a couple of days getting back to you: it was John’s birthday over the weekend so lots of family and friends’ time. Secondly, thank you very much for watching our videos and for subscribing to the channel - it is very much appreciated and we are very glad to be of help 💚 With regards to your leaf rollers, it may be worth trying Bacillus thuringiensis which is readily available from garden centres and is used for caterpillars and with the vine weevils - it is a chore we know going out nightly to shake them off but at least with each adult gone they won’t be laying hundreds of eggs - they are all female - and you will eventually get the numbers down phew! Have a great week All the best Melanie 🌸
@@JohnHorseyHorticulture thank you! And a belated happy birthday to John. I use neem oil pretty much for everything, so I'll be getting that out soon before the plants break buds. Works great for the aphids at least 😁 I got a bit lazy last year, though. Think I didn't spray the Cannas 🤦🏾♀️
Thank you for all your informative videos. They are really helpful. I would like to suggest a possible solution to get rid of weevils. They infested my cistus plants last spring, leaving the leaves full of holes and that is how I spotted something was going on. I made a mixture of "Blue and white soap, (monkey soap or offenbach soap), and sprayed the plants every evening. I also placed a paper under the foliage and shaked the plant to catch the ones that were still on the leaves. After about 1 or 2 weeks they had disappeared and the new leaves were looking good. I am not sure if this did the trick or if some natural predators came along to help, but it's an easy solution that anyone can try.
Hello My Mediterranean Garden - firstly I am sorry to take time replying to you: it was John’s birthday over the weekend so lots of family and friends’ time. Thank you for watching our videos, it is much appreciated and we are very glad to be of help 💚 Thank you for your most insightful comment how interesting - when John owned his nursery he put nematodes in the irrigation supply which helped enormously but that was a commercial enterprise and we’re not doing it here at home! The vine weevil numbers do eventually come down on the night patrols as with each adult gone they are not laying hundreds of eggs which is something - Have a great week All the best Melanie 🌸
Would be interested in a video about pea/bean weevil control, as my spring beans are under attack. And peas. There field sown so a good few kg of seed went in, small scale market gardening. Many thanks
Hello Gavin - thank you for watching and sorry to take so long to reply to your comment: we have been away on a student field trip with quite poor reception. We can recommend an organic vine weevil control and here is the link to it which may suit your small scale market gardening: Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer Standard Pack - ORGANIC by Becker Underwood amzn.to/3ctphPC and as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. If you click through and make a purchase, we may receive a small commission. It does not affect the price you pay. Vine weevils are a pain for sure Enjoy your weekend, All the best Melanie 🌸

Hello I’m new to gardening so this video is really helpful. One thing. I have recently brought strawberry’s from the garden centre and discovered 2 weeks later I have brown orange eggs near the root and some very small warms but haven’t seen adults [yet). I was wondering if I should get the nematodes now and treat or should I just look through the soil to pick out the eggs. What is the best way to get all the eggs out as I’m worried I would have missed some. Should I just get new soil and throw away the old one?
Hello Jess - thank you for watching our video and yes if you are concerned and to be on the safe side get some new, fresh compost and repot your strawberries 🍓which is easy all round. The orange prills are probably fertiliser as the adults have not begun laying their eggs yet. Here is a link for a type of compost which John uses Miracle-Gro All Purpose Compost 40l Bag amzn.to/31odrQn if that is of help. Very good to hear you are new to gardening: you will love it! Enjoy the rest of your week and keep safe All the best 🌸
Hi, great video! I became interested in gardening last year around this time and discovered these evil vine weevils. I have some questions, if you don't mind answering them, I would really appreciate it..... Do you have a link of where you buy the nematodes please? Are there different types of nematodes more suited to our varying UK weather temperatures? When in spring did you administer the nematodes? If the plant looks dead (not in pots), but has very small buds slowly growing, does it mean it has those larvae? I'm going to use on a border, not pots, will it still work? Last question, do you think using granules on top of the soil (not pots) will help stop vine weevils laying their eggs? Sorry for being a quiz master, but hoping you can help. 🙂
Hello M Walker - thank you for watching our video. With your plant, just lift gently with a fork and if the vine weevils are there you will see them eating the roots - you will probably find the plant comes away easily in your hand if the grubs are there. Tweak your plant and look around the soil at the base and it will be obvious if they are there. Granules are not so good as the vine weevils will probably just lay their eggs through them. Here is a link to a Becker Underwood product called Nemasys - it is an organic vine weevil killer standard pack and apply now with a watering can - very straightforward as long as the soil is above 5C 👌and fine for borders and pots: they also have other products for different pests and vegetation - amzn.to/3ctphPC. I have put this link in the video description above too. No problem with questions - always very glad to help 🙂In the meantime keep safe 🌸All the best
@@lala_land86 It's just nature! I'm sorry they chomp on all your precious flowers but, you can't deny that they are really cute? They're certainly not evil, that is a fact.
Noo they are awful, evil creatures who have destroyed my garden. I'm not sure if I hate leather jacket grubs or these more I would have to flip a coin. Very expensive plants with no roots and die
Absolutely HATE these things. They are ruining my life. Especially when they play dead. I have fine tuned my eyes and ears, and I can see one a mile away now and even hear the sound when one drops from a plant. They ate a very expensive yew tree I had in a pot. They are absolutely horrible and so hard to kill, literally an atomic bomb won't kill them.
