I drove tractor trailer for 30 years. I was a instructor for a truck driver school for years as well. I could tell you story’s for hours. One thing I can pass along is . Tractor trailers are mostly 13’6 in height. I would set my antennas for my CB ( I know that’s a old school thing) at 13’6.5 if I heard the antenna rubbing I knew my trailer would not make it thru the bridge or tunnel.. it doesn’t have to be a antenna. You can use any small mounted rod a half inch over the hight of your rig. I could go on and on about this stuff. Good luck my friends.
You have the stick to measure clearance for your slides, make a simple 3 piece pvc pipe that is exactly the height of your rig for times when you have clearance concerns.

At 2:21 you saw CARIBOU! I live in Alberta and have been going to Jasper every year for 20+ years and we’ve never seen caribou. You are so lucky, I’m a little jelly! 🏔️
I would suggest adding a laser ruler to your toolbox so you can measure the EXACT distance from the ground to the bottom of whatever you're trying to clear

I've been to Banff once in my time camping. I couldn't wait to get out of there. I'll camp in Jasper no problem but Banff is just way way way too busy.
As a Canadian, we wanted to say we saw it. We did. Then left. We REALLY enjoyed the Icefields Parkway and stayed three nights in Silverhorn Campground (National Parks) beautiful! Took the glacier tour.

Just write your height on the upper windshield in marker. Even permanent marker wipes clean w/ alcohol. When I drove big rigs I would write my directions on the windshield. No taking eyes off the road cause you sticky paper slid to the floor.
Being from Alberta , I have driven that and camped along Highway 93 , it has awesome scenery and lots of wildlife to see , you should have parked your trailer at a campground on the 93 then you could drive to Lake Louise from there
Awe...its too bad you couldn't see Lake Louise. From memory, there was a huge parking area that was free, with a very short walk to the lake. Either way, the lake is so beautiful, that it messes with your eyes. It almost looks so gorgeous its fake. Its even more beautiful in the late spring when there is light snow on the ground. haha! great video! Helpful hint... When travelling in metric areas convert the height of your rig to meters and you're sll set. so 13'6" equals how many meters? Maybe right it down...? Then no more math the whole trip!

I'm starting to adopt you're philosophy regarding reservations, just don't make them, well except maybe for Fort Wilderness at Disney World, but even then it was only 3 months in advance. We've just started our full time journey but we didn't make any reservations and really haven't had any trouble. Not necessarily the best places but acceptable. Keep the good stuff coming.

Its so beautiful here in Alberta and even tough we spend a lot of time in the area of Banff we never get tired of the views and the stunning beauty of the mountains and the wildlife. Great video. As others already said, Banff tends to be fairly busy but there are plenty of spots around that are less busy and show even more of the majestic mountains.
There is just so much beauty to be had in that area! We hope to make it back into the area soon and do some of the wonderful hikes around Banff 😃 Many thanks for your great support!
There are a few over flow overnight parking spots. Nothing but parking. But you could explore for a few hours, sleep and move on. Back in the 80s is when Banff and Jasper were at their best. Less travelled. But you cant keep the beauty a secret and keep it to ourselves forever. ❤️Alberta rockies.
What States have you NOT been in? Love all the videos! Plus the gas part the semis can raise and lower their trailer by adjusting the airbags in the cab of the truck.
HAHAHA! you guy are hilarious. I'll put this in an American perspective. What you did at Lake Louis would be like pulling up to the Super bowl and trying to park and get in. Canada by far is one of the world's most beautiful and diverse landscapes.
Next time you go to Hinton, if youre coming in from the West head down 40 south (40 north is very cool too you'll see Cariboo just outside of Grand Cache) Anyway down 40 south you'll be away from tourists and there are such breathtaking views its gorgeous out there also there is a giant coal mine mountain near Cadomin and the road goes beside giant mine trucks so it's like you're driving along with them. Cadomin used to have these giant caves to visit but they closed it off due to vandalism. There's a really cool old cemetery on the hill with white painted rod iron crosses and gates. Cardinal divide is down there that is the highest point in Canada and it's gorgeous and hardly anyone is there, you can see down into the valleys from this weirdly flat mountain side area. Plus really pretty spots to stop along the Brazue river that has big gravel parking lot so you can actually park walk around have a picnic, and pretty turquois flowing river water. Brazue dam is there too you make have to make a reservation to camp at the dam though. Along the river is free camping but the locals Im sure call their buddies and tell them when the spots are free so its near impossible to get a spot it seems, might luck out though if someone is leaving when youre coming in. I love that area it used to be a ancient sea shore so lots of sand especially between Robb and Edson AB.
Loving it? Did you notice at UA-cam marker 13:12 you are passing under an animal bridge? Those bridges are land over the highway so animals can cross. They are not a highway or railroad crossing. Neat eh? 🇨🇦
Thank you for your awesome support! I've actually looked into raising the back jacks, but we can only raise them very slightly. The layout is extremely weird and I will have to share that another video. Also worth noting… Procrastination plays a little part in it 🤣
One smart move is to do one of 2 things for reminding yourself of height clearance while driving your RV, either write your required height on the windshield or put a sticker somewhere easy to see, then you can readily know if the sign ahead means you can make it or not.
Columbia Ice Fields makes me sad. We were there in 1976 on the 4th of July and the field was literally 10 feet from the highway. We took a tour on an old bombardier and we had snowball fight with a couple of kids from Georgia. I remember the guide telling us that it was receding at 1/2 inch per year and that he would be out of a job in approximately 2,000 years. Was there in the spring of 2020 and i was shocked by how much it has receded in 44 years. Ice Fields Highway is still my favorite drive for scenery and wildlife. Emerald Lake Yoho National Park is also amazing We camped at Lake Louise but didn't go to the Lake, to crowded. We also stayed at Tunnel Mountain Village Campground. Banff is awesome.

You almost always need reservations in Banff. I've traveled there six or seven times over the last 20 years, and it keeps getting more crowded each time we show up. There is overflow camping next to Banff and lake louise . It's on their web site or ask a park ranger where it's located .
My wife and I just found your channel and we have been binge watching to catch up. 😂 We are just now catching this video and I’m sure someone may have mentioned previously. In the case of the fuel station, an inexpensive laser measure from Lowe’s or Home Depot would give you a solid measurement from ground to overhead.

We dropped the golf course option in HH because it cost as much (or more) for a round of golf as for two plus nites at many full hookup campgrounds. At the low clearance fuel stop, I'm surprised you didn't climb the ladder on the RV and check the clearance. ?
We have Garmin RV but it's failed us a few times. Like the time it took us to a small ferry on Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. I was driving the Jeep behind my hubby (that's another story) and said "Ohhhhh... this is not a good idea." The ferry captain saw us in line, walked over and told us we couldn't board. The motorhome would bottom out on the ramp (that was curved like a U). We had to turn around and take the long route. Know where you go!

At 15:00 (or so) you mentioned "that's how Harvest Hosts" works regarding the golf course. That is sort of but not really. A few years ago, golf courses weren't really part of Harvest Hosts. The idea was that you would "return the favour to camp" by purchasing something. The golf courses insisted that you play a round of golf though. If they allowed you to buy a dinner there instead, I would have been happy with that.

Yes, we could have eaten at a restaurant or bought something from the store to help support the business. Buying a round of golf was not the only way to fulfill our side of the Harvest Host stay. We live in Golden B.C. just an hour from Lake Louise heading West. We have 2 boondocking stops, you would have been very welcome to stay with us, may be next time. Go to Lake Louise in early spring or late fall. We absolutely love Bow River Campground.
Lake Louise has become a pain to visit. Best to take a shuttle or set your alarm and go EARLY. There are usually campsites available on the Icefields Parkway but no hookups. You were lucky to see so much wildlife. We have seen grizzlies at the Lake Louise campground. There is an electric fence around the tent campground. Nancy
@14:30 That's disgusting that a Harvest Host is expecting you to pay $160 for parking. They should be removed from the system. Buying something from the pro shop, or a meal at the restaurant is all you should need to do.
I should clarify because I dropped the ball by not explaining this better in the video. Yes, you are able to just get a meal on the restaurant or buy a little something from the pro shop. I'm sorry you missed Lake Louise. Twenty years ago (on our honeymoon) we went from Missoula, through Glacier, up to Calgary, Banff/Lake Louise, and then to Jasper. We were just in a car and stopped to find motels along the way. The World Cup was in progress so we could only get ONE NIGHT in Calgary. We eventually made it to Prince George, then started back to Vancouver. If you go again go north like we did, then back down Highway 97, and just before you get to Quesnel go east to Wells and Barkerville (an old mining town.) You won't be disappointed.

This way I can start planning sometimes people have good intentions of keeping track of what they spend and then they don’t. I really enjoy your videos of Alaska and Canada and look forward to a total breakdown of your entire trip and summer in Alaska. Also, another question did you ever encounter heavy duty mosquitoes? I watched a video and the gentleman was up in the Arctic Circle where there were large sheets of ice, but still giant mosquitoes.😮

I am surprised that no one told you that the Banff area is always crazy busy, always. It is so close to Calgary that it is easily accessible for tourist. If it wasn't shoulder season there where a few FCFS that you could have enjoyed along the highway heading south and over on #93. Weather and staffing concerns means camping season is brief in the mountains, after all we have seen snow fall in every month there, serious stuff that causes issues and simple showers. I hope off camera that you got to see the many amazing walks in jasper searching for the red chair views and reading about the ice boat that the military built. Lake Louise is insane but there are several walks in that area worth the time but again depending on your travel dates they could have been Closed. Hope you drove the cowboy highway south out of Calgary, the views are amazing and you could have used it all the way down in Waterton. There is so much to see in our province.

to bad you did not ask the park gate person ob other camp sites or the overflow parking. Banff has a industrial park too. now the you found a nice place for a week you can drop the trailer and do a day trip back to Lake Louise, do a short drive to the ski hill for a look. maybe do a gondola ride too on the way back from LL. oh there a hot spring pool to to check out.
Great video. Remember, Harvest Host agreement suggests buying something for about $20 at the host location. We like to use the restaurants when possible and affordable. In this case, it may have been a good time to buy a few golf balls, or hit a few balls in the driving range, if available.
My new acronym is GOAL-UP. When my wife and I went from a small trailer to a longer and taller Fifth Wheel, a friend of ours told us don't forget to look up. He was referring mainly to low hanging branches when backing into a campsite. Well one day when I was by myself I did forget, but not while backing into a wooded campsite. I was pulling out of a covered storage unit with support poles on both sides. It was plenty tall enough and was 12 feet wide. Plenty of room but I had to pull out at an angle. Turning at an angle I knew there would a little tail swing in back. I pulled forward to where the end of the camper was approaching the support poles, got out and looked and everything was fine. Plenty of room at the bottom, but I didn't look up. Apparently as I was pulling out, the top of the camper was leaning more than the bottom. I heard something hit so I stopped. The top part of my camper leaned into the support pole and hit my awning. Scraped it pretty bad, but fortunately I heard it and stopped before it came to the arm. Otherwise I would have ripped off the whole awning. So now I GOAL-UP.
@@HappilyEverHanks imagine being in a semi with no cellphone or gps. I had to go by directions either from another driver or from someone that works at the place I was going to. I found out that most people either don’t pay attention to how they get to work or they just don’t care. I started driving a truck in 1997 no cellphone or gps I had to call from a pay phone and hope they knew which way I was coming from.
We always do as much as we can the night before a travel day. Mostly the sewer hose especially if it’s cold. Because my husband has bad eyes I look at the maps and plan our trip for the following day. This makes for less stress as we drive away.
My scariest time was going down the highway with a 13'6" trailer to a bridge marked 13'9", then coming around the corner and seeing construction restricting down to one lane (actually onto the shoulder) with a temporary sign that read 13'4" . I was past the exit when I saw it. There were lots of huge scrapes on the bridge. I could not back up because there were 10 cars behind me. Cars sped by going the other way. I had to drive into the oncoming lane not sure if I would clear the bridge. Hope you guys make it south before the snow starts.
For a quick conversion of meters to feet, I just round up and multiply by three. You don't get an exact number, but it gives you a close number. FYI most modern bridges and under passes are standardized in Canada of 4.8 meters giving a clearance of 4.5 meters. Older construction will have a sign indicating if its not standard.
After a long drive I came across the Buskirk's covered bridge in New York. It has a very clear sign, at eye level, that says 9 ft 8 in clearance. Another sign read weight limit 12 tons. It didn't look 9 ft 8 in, my van is 9 ft 6 in. I got out my Stanley laser measure device which is good to 30 ft. The actual clearance was over 12 ft. And my 5-ton van made it across no problem.

Been in that station a number of times,, think it’s mislabeled to prevent oversized from hitting the overhang with all the tourists who don’t know how to drive rented vehicles. Also, in winter with lots of snow on the ground you wouldn’t have cleared it.
So sad for you that you Did not make Lake Louise and Lake Moraine who are two absolutly amazing places!😢 so no choice but the Hanks will have to come back to Canada!👍🇨🇦

I've been to Banff once in my time camping. I couldn't wait to get out of there. I'll camp in Jasper no problem but Banff is just way way way too busy.
As a Canadian, we wanted to say we saw it. We did. Then left. We REALLY enjoyed the Icefields Parkway and stayed three nights in Silverhorn Campground (National Parks) beautiful! Took the glacier tour.
Guess the 5000 utube videos on lake Louise may be a part of the problem. Either way Peto or Moraine lakes are twice as nice, half the people

Just write your height on the upper windshield in marker. Even permanent marker wipes clean w/ alcohol.
When I drove big rigs I would write my directions on the windshield. No taking eyes off the road cause you sticky paper slid to the floor.
Being from Alberta , I have driven that and camped along Highway 93 , it has awesome scenery and lots of wildlife to see , you should have parked your trailer at a campground on the 93 then you could drive to Lake Louise from there
Awe...its too bad you couldn't see Lake Louise. From memory, there was a huge parking area that was free, with a very short walk to the lake. Either way, the lake is so beautiful, that it messes with your eyes. It almost looks so gorgeous its fake. Its even more beautiful in the late spring when there is light snow on the ground. I'm starting to adopt you're philosophy regarding reservations, just don't make them, well except maybe for Fort Wilderness at
Disney World, but even then it was only 3 months in advance. We've just started our full time journey but we didn't make any reservations and really haven't had any trouble. Not necessarily the best places but acceptable. Keep the good stuff coming.

Its so beautiful here in Alberta and even tough we spend a lot of time in the area of Banff we never get tired of the views and the stunning beauty of the mountains and the wildlife. Great video.
As others already said, Banff tends to be fairly busy but there are plenty of spots around that are less busy and show even more of the majestic mountains.
There is just so much beauty to be had in that area! We hope to make it back into the area soon and do some of the wonderful hikes around Banff 😃 Many thanks for your great support!
There are a few over flow overnight parking spots. Nothing but parking. But you could explore for a few hours, sleep and move on.
Back in the 80s is when Banff and Jasper were at their best. Less travelled. But you cant keep the beauty a secret and keep it to ourselves forever.

HAHAHA! you guy are hilarious. I'll put this in an American perspective. What you did at Lake Louis would be like pulling up to the Super bowl and trying to park and get in. Canada by far is one of the world's most beautiful and diverse landscapes.

Next time you go to Hinton, if youre coming in from the West head down 40 south (40 north is very cool too you'll see Cariboo just outside of Grand Cache) Anyway down 40 south you'll be away from tourists and there are such breathtaking views its gorgeous out there also there is a giant coal mine mountain near Cadomin and the road goes beside giant mine trucks so it's like you're driving along with them. Cadomin used to have these giant caves to visit but they closed it off due to vandalism. There's a really cool old cemetery on the hill with white painted rod iron crosses and gates. Cardinal divide is down there that is the highest point in Canada and it's gorgeous and hardly anyone is there, you can see down into the valleys from this weirdly flat mountain side area. Plus really pretty spots to stop along the Brazue river that has big gravel parking lot so you can actually park walk around have a picnic, and pretty turquois flowing river water. Brazue dam is there too you make have to make a reservation to camp at the dam though. Along the river is free camping but the locals Im sure call their buddies and tell them when the spots are free so its near impossible to get a spot it seems, might luck out though if someone is leaving when youre coming in. I love that area it used to be a ancient sea shore so lots of sand especially between Robb and Edson AB.
Loving it? Did you notice at UA-cam marker 13:12 you are passing under an animal bridge? Those bridges are land over the highway so animals can cross. They are not a highway or railroad crossing. Neat eh? 🇨🇦

One smart move is to do one of 2 things for reminding yourself of height clearance while driving your RV, either write your required height on the windshield or put a sticker somewhere easy to see, then you can readily know if the sign ahead means you can make it or not.

Columbia Ice Fields makes me sad. We were there in 1976 on the 4th of July and the field was literally 10 feet from the highway. We took a tour on an old bombardier and we had snowball fight with a couple of kids from Georgia. I remember the guide telling us that it was receding at 1/2 inch per year and that he would be out of a job in approximately 2,000 years. Was there in the spring of 2020 and i was shocked by how much it has receded in 44 years. Ice Fields Highway is still my favorite drive for scenery and wildlife. We stay at Harvest Host Golf courses all the time. We often will just eat in the pub. We play golf sometimes but more often than not we don't.
We went to Canada this last summer and this is the method we used to convert too. Yep, they need to change their sign. :)
Emerald Lake Yoho National Park is also amazing
We camped at Lake Louise but didn't go to the Lake, to crowded.
We also stayed at Tunnel Mountain Village Campground. Banff is awesome.
28 degrees in Canada is nice warm weather. In the US is is freaking cold.

You almost always need reservations in Banff. I've traveled there six or seven times over the last 20 years, and it keeps getting more crowded each time we show up. There is overflow camping next to Banff and lake louise . It's on their web site or ask a park ranger where it's located .
My wife and I just found your channel and we have been binge watching to catch up. 😂 We are just now catching this video and I’m sure someone may have mentioned previously. In the case of the fuel station, an inexpensive laser measure from Lowe’s or Home Depot would give you a solid measurement from ground to overhead.

We dropped the golf course option in HH because it cost as much (or more) for a round of golf as for two plus nites at many full hookup campgrounds. At the low clearance fuel stop, I'm surprised you didn't climb the ladder on the RV and check the clearance. ?

We have Garmin RV but it's failed us a few times. Like the time it took us to a small ferry on Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. I was driving the Jeep behind my hubby (that's another story) and said "Ohhhhh... this is not a good idea." The ferry captain saw us in line, walked over and told us we couldn't board. The motorhome would bottom out on the ramp (that was curved like a U). We had to turn around and take the long route. Know where you go!

At 15:00 (or so) you mentioned "that's how Harvest Hosts" works regarding the golf course. That is sort of but not really. A few years ago, golf courses weren't really part of Harvest Hosts. The idea was that you would "return the favour to camp" by purchasing something. The golf courses insisted that you play a round of golf though. If they allowed you to buy a dinner there instead, I would have been happy with that.

Yes, we could have eaten at a restaurant or bought something from the store to help support the business. Buying a round of golf was not the only way to fulfill our side of the Harvest Host stay. We live in Golden B.C. just an hour from Lake Louise heading West. We have 2 boondocking stops, you would have been very welcome to stay with us, may be next time.
Go to Lake Louise in early spring or late fall. We absolutely love Bow River Campground.

Lake Louise has become a pain to visit. Best to take a shuttle or set your alarm and go EARLY. There are usually campsites available on the Icefields Parkway but no hookups. You were lucky to see so much wildlife. We have seen grizzlies at the Lake Louise campground. There is an electric fence around the tent campground. Nancy

@14:30 That's disgusting that a Harvest Host is expecting you to pay $160 for parking. They should be removed from the system. Buying something from the pro shop, or a meal at the restaurant is all you should need to do.
I should clarify because I dropped the ball by not explaining this better in the video. Yes, you are able to just get a meal on the restaurant or buy a little something from the pro shop. However, I wanted to golf really bad and didn't want to pay $160 for that. So I just wanted explain that you are absolutely correct. Thank you for watching!

I'm sorry you missed Lake Louise. Twenty years ago (on our honeymoon) we went from Missoula, through Glacier, up to Calgary, Banff/Lake Louise, and then to Jasper. We were just in a car and stopped to find motels along the way. The World Cup was in progress so we could only get ONE NIGHT in Calgary. We eventually made it to Prince George, then started back to Vancouver. If you go again go north like we did, then back down Highway 97, and just before you get to Quesnel go east to Wells and Barkerville (an old mining town.) You won't be disappointed.

I am surprised that no one told you that the Banff area is always crazy busy, always. It is so close to Calgary that it is easily accessible for tourist. If it wasn't shoulder season there where a few FCFS that you could have enjoyed along the highway heading south and over on #93. Weather and staffing concerns means camping season is brief in the mountains, after all we have seen snow fall in every month there, serious stuff that causes issues and simple showers. I hope off camera that you got to see the many amazing walks in jasper searching for the red chair views and reading about the ice boat that the military built. Lake Louise is insane but there are several walks in that area worth the time but again depending on your travel dates they could have been Closed. Hope you drove the cowboy highway south out of Calgary, the views are amazing and you could have used it all the way down in Waterton. There is so much to see in our province.

Great video. Remember, Harvest Host agreement suggests buying something for about $20 at the host location. We like to use the restaurants when possible and affordable. In this case, it may have been a good time to buy a few golf balls, or hit a few balls in the driving range, if available.

My new acronym is GOAL-UP. When my wife and I went from a small trailer to a longer and taller Fifth Wheel, a friend of ours told us don't forget to look up. He was referring mainly to low hanging branches when backing into a campsite. Well one day when I was by myself I did forget, but not while backing into a wooded campsite. I was pulling out of a covered storage unit with support poles on both sides. It was plenty tall enough and was 12 feet wide. Plenty of room but I had to pull out at an angle. Turning at an angle I knew there would a little tail swing in back. I pulled forward to where the end of the camper was approaching the support poles, got out and looked and everything was fine. Plenty of room at the bottom, but I didn't look up. Apparently as I was pulling out, the top of the camper was leaning more than the bottom. I heard something hit so I stopped. The top part of my camper leaned into the support pole and hit my awning. Scraped it pretty bad, but fortunately I heard it and stopped before it came to the arm. Otherwise I would have ripped off the whole awning. So now I GOAL-UP.
They probably measured from the center of the axel instead of the ground. There still might be some in New York City. Or closer to Brooklyn.

@@HappilyEverHanks imagine being in a semi with no cellphone or gps. I had to go by directions either from another driver or from someone that works at the place I was going to. I found out that most people either don’t pay attention to how they get to work or they just don’t care. I started driving a truck in 1997 no cellphone or gps I had to call from a pay phone and hope they knew which way I was coming from.
We always do as much as we can the night before a travel day. Mostly the sewer hose especially if it’s cold. Because my husband has bad eyes I look at the maps and plan our trip for the following day. This makes for less stress as we drive away.
My scariest time was going down the highway with a 13'6" trailer to a bridge marked 13'9", then coming around the corner and seeing construction restricting down to one lane (actually onto the shoulder) with a temporary sign that read 13'4" . I was past the exit when I saw it. There were lots of huge scrapes on the bridge. I could not back up because there were 10 cars behind me. Cars sped by going the other way. I had to drive into the oncoming lane not sure if I would clear the bridge.
Hope you guys make it south before the snow starts.
For a quick conversion of meters to feet, I just round up and multiply by three. You don't get an exact number, but it gives you a close number. FYI most modern bridges and under passes are standardized in Canada of 4.8 meters giving a clearance of 4.5 meters. Older construction will have a sign indicating if its not standard.

After a long drive I came across the Buskirk's covered bridge in New York. It has a very clear sign, at eye level, that says 9 ft 8 in clearance. Another sign read weight limit 12 tons. It didn't look 9 ft 8 in, my van is 9 ft 6 in. I got out my Stanley laser measure device which is good to 30 ft. The actual clearance was over 12 ft. And my 5-ton van made it across no problem.

Been in that station a number of times,, think it’s mislabeled to prevent oversized from hitting the overhang with all the tourists who don’t know how to drive rented vehicles. Also, in winter with lots of snow on the ground you wouldn’t have cleared it.
😂 It is snow plowed because the pumps would be buried then too! 6” of packed snow at the pumps 🤣.
