As flight engineer, part of his job is to fine tune the power settings as was done when he reduced power during climb out, a routine on every flight. The captain does the initial push to start the flight. The FE is making sure the throttle is set to the exact takeoff power settings calculated in pre-flight briefing. The captain needs his eyes outside most of the time on takeoff as much as possible. Division of responsibility is well defined on the flight deck.
According to the accident report of the aircraft involving Captain Parvez Iqbal Chaudhry, the fatal crash was his fault as he failed to keep situational awareness and emotionally incapacitated his co-pilot by berating him. Co-pilot's, who was an ex-PAF officer, military mindset stopped him from questioning Captain Parvez Iqbal Chaudhry's bad decisions.
Google ; I am presently loading cargo on the PIA B777 at Heathrow. I really enjoy it and I normally nominate myself through my allocation team to load this aircraft. I have also on two occasions loaded cargo on the PIA B747 AP-BGG and was a very outstanding experience. We had a little setback on push back were aircraft engine was refusing to spin due to fuel pump which was corrected by the pilots and flight engineer.
The probable cause of the A 320 at ISL was that the captain was suffering from hypoglycemia , bought on by fasting and flying. He had planned to pray throughout the night and fast the next day, for which he had taken leave. He was picked up as a standby and, by the time he reached ISL he probably was losing situation awareness. He asked for a right hand circuit for a bad weather circuit which was forbidden . He could never have kept the runway in sight from his left seat. He was given a left hand circuit after breaking off the ILS approach . To do that he had to make a 45 degree turn to the right and after 30 seconds turn left parallel to runway 12. He made the first turn to the right but continued on that heading towards the Margalla Hills. He did not respond to warnings from ATC , his copilot, or the aircraft ground proximity warnings. His personal and illegal religious interpretations killed all on board. I had , when being Chief Pilot Safety in the 1990s, banned fasting and flying in PIA. Later the CAA banned it too. So that made it a legal requirement. Islam excuses a person from fasting while on a journey and allows it to be made up at a later date. Sadly this was repeated at Karachi by another A 320 on the last day of Ramadan. Anything to do with religion is hushed up but I managed to get warnings issued to PIA pilots through the management (I was now retired) so there has not been an accident since then. If anyone wants to praise a pilot who is so irresponsible, think of all the bereaved families whose misery was brought on them under his command. An airline pilot, when he/she sits in the cockpit to do the job should forget family troubles, management troubles and religious convictions. There is only ONE sacred duty: to fly your aircraft, passengers, and crew as safely and expeditiously to their destination as possible. NOTHING else matters.
I think i remember Capt.Parvaiz flying from when i was a kid. I went to visit the flight deck and he showed me around...will never forget the beard, and how remarkably friendly he was....A shame to hear he passed away
Junaid, nothing wrong with PIA my friend, flown many times with them, would do for many other airlines to look at PIA and learn lessons, keep the flag flying PIA,
I like the way the late Capt Pervaiz says: Bismillahir Rahman er Rahim. at '07:17. I do the same just before jamming the thrust lever for takeoff roll. :) He was a great Captain. Rest in Peace! Aameen
Man that plane is a antique its a wonder it doesn't fall apart i cant that one is still flying if you want to see a modern one go here ( Cockpit - Boeing 747-400 Takeoff from Hong Kong )
Rest in peace Captain Parvez Iqbal Choudary. You was a great and experienced pilot. Accidents happen but it was unfortunate that you had to go. Your expert flying still lives on today. You are a role model to us youth to be like you. I want to be a Captian like you. One day. Rest in peace.
What are you talking about? Have you read the AirBlue accident report? This CA was completely at fault. He took a snobbish tone and quizzed the FO, he destroyed any CRM on that AirBlue flight deck, and then he flew into a mountain killing everyone on the plane.
If the cockpit crew is forbidden to fast it would make everyone feel more safe and comfortable. Going for hours without meals and w/o sugar intake would make anyone delirious and light-headed in no time, and would never see an incoming mountain☹🧐
The name of Captain is Pervaiz Iqbal Chaudhry, he was the captain of that ill-fated Airblue flight which crashed into Margalla Hills in 2010...... May Allah rest his soul in peace
I knew the Flight Officer Muntajib ( Squadron Leader , Pakistan Air Force ) ...... he was co-pilot with Capt. Pervez Iqbal Chaudhry on his last flight ......... a very fine gentleman ...... played cricket very well ........... would have been test cricketer , if not a pilot ...... Rest in peace , my brother
umm... they do their job just like Lufthansa pilots do theirs. they do their job just like Delta pilots do theirs... so that isnt anymore amazing than other pilots working for other airlines... whats amazes me is their EXTREMELY smooth landings.. every time PIA pilots land a plane it is incredibly smooth!!!
Ameen,, In fact he hit Margalla Hills and saved Rawalpindi/Islamabad,,One taliban was in that flight who ordered this great pilot to hit giant oil reservoirs of Morgah, but he preferred to hit Margalla Hills. May Allah accept their sacrifice.

Awesome Video! Why was the flight engineer also pushing the throttle when the captain intially pushed them forward on take off? And why did the FE adjust them in flight?
What a great video. Heavy take off on the classic 747. I cannot believe this experienced captain made such an error with the Air Blue A321 crash! Thank you for sharing the video.
@beergut111 these pilots are the best because they have the pleasure of allah on their side notice howw captain mentioned allahs name before grabbing the throttle
not really. you see, landing depends on the wind conditions, i've seen many landings done by PIA 777-200LR in toronto and they're just the same as others. There is no good or bad landing as long as you land without damaging the aircraft. btw i flew with PIA many times.
I am very hurt that you have told me capt chaudtry how is the PIC of the 743 AP-BFV in this video has passed way . and he was the commander of the air blue A321 which has come to me as a shock why because I have cont watched video on,/off. amazing......these guys made it through training. No wonder they make the flight crews go through security. Do they get in trouble if they commit a terrorist act on their own plane?
@dabbapeer what are you talking about lol?? commercial pilots get paid in the 100,000 range on an average per year. Thts ALOT. and it usually raises higher fast by time. Senior pilots make around 200,000 per year. Plus benefits of free family flights anywhere in the world etc. commercial pilot is one of the most well paid jobs in the world
Is it normaly to allow the plane to fly with its number 4 engine fuel flow U/S? BTW Pervez Iqbal Chaudhry was involved in the Controlled Flight Into Terrain in 2010. RIP!
Not sure but if I remember correctly there is also another fuel flow indicator on the flight engineer panel…..could be part of their minimum equipment list that they still can do this flight with one fuel flow indicator down….
Late Capt Pervaiz Iqbal was magnificent human and was so kind . We will always remember you . Its sad to know that the fatal Air blue crash is blamed on him . He was skillful pilot .
What a great memories with Sir Pervez ! May Allah bless his soul in jannah ! Ameen ! As a saw the older comments under this video ! If you're *JAMMING* the thrust lever, then that's a problem
I wonder if he said that before crashing into a mountain and killing 151 innocent people.
He made a mistake and it cost him and his passengers lives.... no need to bad mouth him here.
Hot and heavy operation - The Old RWY 18R. Used the whole of the runway wow!
That looks like an original 747 cockpit from 1970.
It was a later model, a B747-300.

A far from perfect take off. He almost overshot the runway. Pathetic stuff!

Most aviation accidents are caused by human error. He failed to follow procedures. Read Pak Tribune article about the crash.

So it was this same arrogant pilot captain which caused airblu 202 crash and killed 200 ppl?

@1860george Many thanks for the info dude!
The beard reminds me of Capt. Qadri; he of the famous Qadri-Cruise flight that he would follow to save fuel -- or so the story goes.
The real story was that pilots were then paid by hours flown. Qadri slowed the aircraft down for this. That did not save fuel.
