You really should play Mother. Yeah, sure. It has VERY dated design and controls. Slow, and sometimes boring battles? A large and somewhat confusing overworld? Labyrinthian Dungeon’s? All of those, absolutely. But the charm still shines through. There are good and bad versions to play. I recommend Clyde Mandolin’s Mother 1+2 fan translation, which includes the easy ring (Trust me, you need it, the game takes 10 times longer without) There is also the 25th Anniversary addition, which is easily the definitive version. This song is amazingly evocative. It captures the warm feelings and peace of home, this nostalgic feeling of a place you remember fondly. At the same time, there is a sense of melancholy to it, a sense of being unsure when or if you can ever go back. It's such a complex emotion, that it's hard to even describe.
