Stuttgart has done what they could to separate trams from auto traffic, not easy in an old city. The system itself is old, but the stations are clean and bright. It seems well patronized. How I wish we had such public transport in the US!
I heard a visitor say that what surprised them most in Stuttgart was "car-driving as a three-dimensional experience". The city is as hilly as San Francisco, with a 330 meter (1000 foot) change in altitude within the city limits.
@15:40 now that Staatsgalerie has been relocated a little bit east, actually closer to the Planetarium, as a result of Stuttgart21, this is a nice view of what Staatsgalerie used to look like before the demolition and reconstruction. For example, @16:09 shows the direct branch towards the Hbf, which has since been demolished, as it was interfering with the south tunnel's construction sections "BA21", "BA22" and "BA23". Rathaus is the only other station that was like Staatsgalerie, with an extra outer track. They say that in December 2023, the U14 connection from Hbf and Staatsgalerie should be reestablished, and the outer track towards Mineralbäder should have electrification once that line is put in full service again.
It's the ventilation of the two street tunnels you can see at 10:35 (left and right of the tram track). The ventilation shafts 100 m away on the right sight might be of the railway tunnel...
It was built for smaller U-Bahn trains back in the 60s. But since around 20 years they have the new, bigger trains so they only kept some of the old tracks for special events Edit: You can see one of the old trains at 12:00
It's standard gauge (1435 mm, typical for railway trains, but an underground or tram network may have it as well) and meter gauge (typical for trams) in one place.

At 4:50 both tracks run in parallel, something I have never seen. AMAZING I must say. But at 8:48 the track from left is connected, the train should topple. But it passes smoothly. What trick the driver uses? Good video otherwise, no fault of yours for whatever construction errors from the Metro :-)
The third rail is a leftover from the Times when the network was converted from 1000mm gauge to regular 1435mm. Now that all lines run on 1435mm the third rails are obsolete, but some are kept for historic trains.
The gauge now is 1435 mm. The old tram system had a gauge of 1000 mm. From 1986 to 2007 almost all tracks were build with two gauges to support old and new trams. Nowadays there are only two lines with 1000 mm left for historical traffic. The two lines meet at 10:03 and 10:38 at "Mercedesstraße". The 1000 mm gauge will be removed with every superstructure renewering, so there are a lot of remains left.
(@@blaukrautbrautkleid7760 : That' another place.) That is a "Gleisverschlingung" = "frog gauntlet track". It is cheaper and more robust than switches. Many tram vehicles are unidirectional (upon other limitations) and can't use the flexibility that switches provide to railway operation.

Stuttgart przechodził z rozstawu 1000 mm na 1435 mm. Stosowano podwójny rozstaw szyn. Obecnie dodatkowe szyny do rozstawu 1000 mm są demontowane, po za trasą pozostawioną do obsługi historycznym taborem.

"A" means "Anforderung" engl. "request". it is needed if the signal is covering a crossing. If the "A" appears, the train is recognized by local interlocking and it will switch for the train.

Trams and subways are running with the BOStrab (Regulation of building and operating trams) and "normal" trains and railroads are operating with the EBO (Regulation of building and operating trains). Im Prinzip ist die Kombination aus Straßenbahn und U-Bahn eine gute Idee. In Stuttgart hat man aber wohl auch die Tunnelstrecken nach Straßenbahn-Standard gebaut (enge Kurvenradien, niedrige Fahrgeschwindigkeit) so dass die Vorteile der Tunnelstrecken nicht voll ausgeschöpft werden. Eigentlich ist es möglich, mit 80 km/h abzüglich Beschleunigung und Abbremsen ca. 1 Kilometer pro Minute zurückzulegen.
Die Tunnel stammen noch aus der Zeit wo Stuttgart eine Meterspurstraßenbahn hatte. Sie sind dehalb eigentlich für Straßenbahnen konzipiert worden. Auf neueren Tunnelstecken wie z.B.: U15 Zuffenhausen wir wesentlich schneller gefahren.

Word connection Stadtbahn means City Rail, so the average travel speed should be higher ( at least in tunnel sections) than normal tram network, not to mention too short distances between stations. Edit: For comparison. Here in Czech Republic at north of the country between two cities, Liberec and Jablonec n. These switches are not locked, so they can be pushed open. Speed limit is probably 15 km/h.

It may have switched just in time. When a bit of track goes out of frame, there are still a few meters left before the wheels reach that point
