  • Discipline stands for willpower, persevering against resistance, those who 'A' must also say 'B'. You probably know this in your work too, that you need self-discipline. You can list a whole list of things you should do today....
    I need to draw more.
You can use that self-discipline to get something done. For example, "draw more" or fill in your goal for "draw". Exercising? Take a rest? Go to a museum? Working billable hours?
My name is Astrid Moors, I am of the visual order. As a self-employed person, I know all about the universal fact that you need self-discipline to keep going. Forcing yourself to do something, obeying yourself to keep appointments and motivating yourself.
Well, how do you do that? You can train that. Or just turn it on. Make appointments with yourself. Write it down. Put it in your diary. Inspire yourself by keeping a higher goal in sight. You can also challenge yourself by going a little further each time, taking a bigger step. One week cold shower for 5 seconds at a time, the following week 10 seconds....
(There is plenty to read online about self-discipline: aim, plan, don't give up, be strict with yourself sometimes and also reward yourself in between).
You can also connect a regular routine you already have with one thing you want to do more. Habit stacking.
In my case, it is: I want to draw more (not I have to draw more, because then you are putting your own heels in the sand in advance). So I draw my coffee mug every day, before I drink it.
No, I don't show them here, because they are not made for that. It's purely to get more drawing fingers, more muscle memory, more joy in drawing. Not for prying eyes.
Do you know Klaas Gubbels? Just yesterday I saw many of his works, at Museum Arnhem. He has been painting coffee pots, but used to paint cups and tables as well, for years on end. And still does, at 90, and rejoices. Routine or self-discipline? Both, I think.
What do you want more of? And what is your "habit stacking" to get there?
Then self-discipline becomes easier at some point, there is less resistance and it becomes a routine, running on its own energy.
This one is finished. Next time, a video on this work. Tree to tango. Want to see m? Come along for a coffee. I'll also lay out a sheet of paper and a pencil for you.

Groeten, Heidi
