    Good job knowing and showing how to diagnose and confirm a bad part (instead of just guessing and replacing the most common cause of the problem) - rare to see.

    This looks incredibly simple, my car is at the dealer right now a 2011 malibu they said $600 to replace both solenoids, I'm also getting a check engine light on. I told them I will hold off on that, looks like something I could do myself or have a local shop do, thanks for the video.

      I know this is 3 years old but you can always go to an autozone lot and there’s usually great mechanics in the lot and they get a discount in the store for parts and they do great work for reasonable prices. Make sure to always tip those gentlemen

    Those cam actuators are very failure prone. Not just the exhaust but the intake cam actuator also. You can also do a resistance check on those. Resistance should be between 8 and 12 ohms. My 07 Cobalt had a P0010 code (intake cam). All I did was check resistance on that actuator, read 0. Replaced it, and clears the codes. BOOM DONE.

    I used an AUTEL AL319 (diag can) to pull the P0013 from my wife's Malibu. We just bought the car 3 months ago from the dealer and it still has 5 years of warranty? Would this issue be covered by a warranty or would I be better off to do it myself? Also, I cleared the error to turn off the check engine light and to see if it would return. It's been two weeks and the P0013 has not returned. If the part is truly bad wouldn't the P0013 error condition return?

    Your third line of scan data at the end of the video during your repair verification, if you would have done this test upfront, the VARIANCE scan data would show the lack of solenoid operation or another issue such as blocked oil ports but the third line of data would have pointed you in a direction, which is where you went for a repair, thanks for all the great info. ALSO, did you need to do a key recycle between time outs on this GM, some vehicles require a key recycle to run the test again??

    • @duanedonaldson2262
      @duanedonaldson2262 5 років тому

      EOP, Engine Oil Pressure. If the solenoid works but the cam does not move, oil pressure problems are highly suspect, a clogged or restricted oil port at the solenoid or phasor. You are correct, the solenoid is power side controlled on many vehicles, the data may be generic for many GM vehicles in your scan tool that may be ground side controlled on other GM's??
      Color coding in your data looks good, guessing the brown is grounds and the lt-green and purple are the power side controls.

    Pull out the solenoid connect the two pins to a battery and see if the plunger inside the solenoid will move. If it does then the solenoid is good if not then spray it with a break cleaner and see if plunger will move if not then its broken, just replace it... thats how you test it without a scanner

    This comes from the 2013 model:
    "The ECM controls the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve by supplying a 12 V pulse width modulated (PWM) signal. The ECM supplies a ground to the low reference circuit."
    In short, the computer supplies both, Power and Ground at the same time when needed.

    Great video. Very informative. I just recently had my 2012 Malibu intake cam replaced (P0010) and I feel like they overcharged me. $99 for engine diagnosis, $115.17 for parts $55 for labor.. does anyone know if that's how much it normally cost?

      A Genuine GM Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve costs $40.54 new, $99 for engine diagnosis sounds ridiculous, that should be $20 at most. $115.17 for parts, you were absolutely overcharged, and $55 for labor sounds abhorrent. It's an easy DIY job that only requires a 10mm socket and a ratchet. It should have been a total $70 repair at most.

    • @traviskinney9988
      @traviskinney9988 6 років тому

      NFS! I'm late to the game but on your diagnosis fee, you are FOS. You pay for an hour diagnosis even if it takes 5 minutes. $99 is average for an hour. The labor also sounds right. If their labor rate is $100/hr and charge minimum 1/2 hr labor. The only possible overcharge is the parts but I wouldn't know that without looking up the cost.

Anywho after getting 3 ft away from the dealer car stuttered shut down engine light and it started back up now my check engine light just comes on and off when it pleases. The stealership tried to say $800 for them to remove the head, measure cam lobes, and check timing. Chevy should cover that because there is no reason it should have bad cam unless bad vvt caused progressive damage? What do I know though. Good luck let me know if you find something more out.

    • @Mystykalbaby1979
      @Mystykalbaby1979 2 роки тому

      @@zHazzz for me it was a bad sensor/solenoid combo on intake side. Make sure that the oil filter isn’t the culprit (some have internal one way flow check valves). And you need to look for signs of poor oil maintenance. Low oil, low oil pressure, semi burned old oil that gets thick can clog those little oil passages and that affects the solenoid ability to function. If you’re feeling bold take the valve cover off and check for damage to either cams and the variable lift assembly.
      I’m not sure which motor you have but if you have codes for a “too rich” condition present and it’s a DI motor it can be faulted high pressure pump too. Since it’s cam driven it can leak fuel into the valvetrain assembly.

      Unplugging the connector and doing some voltage checks. Let's say you unplug the connector and you have 12v on one side. That tells you, you have a feed voltage coming in and the computer controls the ground side. In this case we unplug it and it has a bias voltage that gets pulled to ground through the solenoid and that tells us it is power side switched
