My husband and I had a motorcycle at that time and decided that we would go down to the Square and watch the balloon launch. We parked our motorcycle by the old stone church and sat there and watched it all ,we were eager to leave when the weather turned a little dark because we would get soaking wet on our motorcycle. Happy to be there that day.
That sounds like a dark and tragic disaster of epic proportions. Your harrowing tale is a warning to future generations and I thank you for having the strength and courage to share it with us. I'm so sorry that happened to you. Be strong.
This is a beautiful documentary! And love how balloons bring people together. However, it’s quite troubling how social media really twists the truth around and so many people jump on the bandwagon. I hope we can learn from this, while moving forward. You definitely can’t believe everything you read! So glad this event helped Cleveland turn a corner in 1986.
Thank you! I have always been familiar with the launch and Treb's important role, but the stunning images and full story details from initial concept to fulfilling this massive feat was incredible to watch. Thanks for setting the story straight for everyone in our industry!
Thank you for setting the record straight. I was born in 1990 lived in northeast Ohio my whole life never hearing about this. I found out about this event through a negative video so it’s nice to see someone putting the truth out there!
@@marklejordan@marklejordan I was referring to the fact that so many people (who were never there) thought that Balloonfest was a disaster when, in fact, it was quite a success.
@@DougBardwell thank you for clarifying. let the record reflect another success for Cleveland!!! I noticed you were listed in the special thanks... what is your connection to this video?
@@marklejordan I was Construction Manager in the Terminal Tower (the building the balloons encircled) and was tapped to obtain the building permit for the event. Fortunately, I still had many of the original sketches and plans which John was able to use in the video.
I don't need to watch any documentary about it to understand that so much plastic (or even latex) released in the air to float around uncontrollably had to be a disaster for the environment.
It’s the same with the whole “river on fire” meme about Cleveland. I’ve heard that plenty of cities had their rivers on fire in those times. Cleveland wasn’t even close to the only one.
"BalloonFest '86: The Real Story" is an uplifting tale about vision and the human spirit. It highlights leaders and children from across the region coming together to make a statement and raise funds for charity. It shows what Cleveland can achieve when it sets its mind to something. The video demonstrates that when East and West Siders unite with a common vision of working together for the greater good, nothing is impossible in Cleveland, OH-the Best Location in the Nation!
But why balloons in the air? Why not everybody get together and gather trash, plant trees, play music or something? Weird thing to put so much time and money into putting even more trash everywhere 🤔 what if all of those people decided on something else to put all of that energy into instead of filling and tying up 1.5 million balloons. Imagine what they could have accomplished if they had focused all of that on something that actually benefited the city and those who live there?? All of that just for balloons that are going to end up back on the ground? Could have come up with a different idea 😜 Just food for thought.
There’s other ways of bringing people together. Imagine if they put all of this time and energy and money and effort into something that lasted and didn’t just put more trash on the street 😢 could have been so cool if they came up with a different idea!
I had forgotten all about BalloonFest until videos started popping up on UA-cam talking about what a "disaster" it was, that it caused the deaths of two fishermen, etc. I hope this video gains traction to counteract the misinformation.
@@RawOlympia yeah I was gonna say regardless if the larger claims are false or not it’s definitely not good for the environment! I feel like we should’ve known that in 1986. I mean we did -I was 16 and I remember a few years before that we had an environmental scientist come to class and talk about things that are dangerous for birds on the beach (I lived in Washington state) and balloons were one of them!
very cool!!! saw something about it on IG it was a thread snipit so i couldn't read the tone of it. but i had to look it up when it said how many balloons lol
Whataboutism at its finest. Birds and animals living in the lake died by ingesting latex and getting tangled in balloon fragments. Just because it’s biodegradable doesn’t mean it’s harmless. Many animals suffocated, or they died because the amount was too much for their digestive system to process. I’d love to see people glossing over that fact feed balloons to people and still say it’s harmless when they get bowel obstruction. There were car and motorcycle accidents on the roads caused by the balloons too. This whole thing was a bad idea to pull through especially with the weather back then, and people refuse to take responsibility to this day instead of calling it a learning experience? Remarkably egotistical.
How do you know there were car and motorcycle accidents? This was claimed by The Atlantic, but their article/video was full of misinformation, as evidenced by this documentary.
Yeah, imagine all the fish death, bird death, and just litter all over, super gross, and then they virtue signal and talk aobut how it brings everyone together, must be a DuPont sale, who made the money off this???

At the time of posting this comment, (the 6th), this video debuted on UA-cam approximately 8 hours ago. It’s Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. The video currently has 514 views. I’m curious how many views it will receive today, over this Memorial Day weekend, and over the coming weeks, months, years. Sadly, I’m thinking it will be FAR fewer than the negative, manipulative, and untruthful videos that created the persistent urban myth. So how will we, the UA-cam community, the NE Ohio community, the US and the world community, counter misinformation? Where we commit our time, attention, and treasure, we commit our minds and bodies. We become what we consume and do. I pray we will all remember that no matter our background, we all live in a community, and a community is built on common purpose, common welfare, and common dignity. Truth matters. Kindness matters. Love matters above all. I pray that when we encounter the unkind, untruthful, and unloving, that we be granted discernment and wisdom to avoid consuming and distributing those things. We are all in this together.
Very cool retelling and to see an insiders look on this event! Loved the doc all the way up until the rebuttals to the misinformed videos and articles. I think the first 22 minutes would be a better impact alone without the strong biases and cheesy editing of the 2nd half of the video.
In 1983 we had an environmentalist coming to our classroom and talk about things that are dangerous to animals at the beach (I lived in Washington state) and balloons were among those so it was in the public consciousness. It might not have been the same level today, but if you have somebody coming into speak with kids in the classroom it wasn’t completely unknown. Similarly, today it is known that AI is detrimental to the creative industry so maybe not use AI generated graphics for your video? I’m sure you don’t want ChatGPT creating articles from copy scraped from your site, it’s not any different for graphic designers and artists Just saying.
